dude you repeatedly keep playing devil's advocate asking us to consider the plight of some person who :gasp: has to share a bathroom with a transperson. sorry i keep confusing your nebulous position with those of people you're just trying to stick up for.

Basic synopsis of the bathroom argument:

"I don't see the issue with them going in the women's bathroom as long as they look like a woman and I can tell it's actually a man so that I don't make a pass and get angry enough to commit violence."

[Edited on June 10, 2015 at 3:34 PM. Reason : a lot of their views on trans issues stems from misogyny. ]

Clifton, you're the one calling them predators. Some people just have an attraction to children. You're sounding really bigoted right now.

From reading this thread, it seems like a number of people aren't that familiar with transpeople (myself included)...and I think generally speaking, "whatever they want to do in their own home" is 100% fine with all of us...but it's not something we see on a day to day basis, or are even that familiar with it. Transpeople seem weird, ie out of the ordinary. That's not inherently bad, it's just something a lot of people aren't familiar with.

Then people like adultswim come across like their entire circle of friends are trans and they routinely witness them getting denied entrance to restaurants and stuff and on a daily basis see the issues trans people face.

^^ Agreed. For the record he said he was okay with incest too

The "Trans people getting assaulted on the streets" and "Trans people denied their rights" was what I was arguing against, which means I am a bigot. I don't know what this bathroom discussion is about.

wait. what?

Trans people HAVE had their rights denied and transpeople HAVE been attacked. You may not see it as a huge deal or problem, but some people think it's incredibly fucked up if it even happens to a small number of people.

There isn't anything wrong with being unfamiliar. There is something wrong with claiming the problem doesn't exist because you haven't seen it personally.

Trans people are victims of verbal harassment on a regular basis, and, less commonly, are physically attacked. There was a trans person in my high school and she was mercilessly bullied. Kids are cruel, and so are adults.

Everyone has had their rights denied and has been attacked. There isn't any "national crisis" of trans people being singled out and beaten.

The suffering for trans people is 99% because being trans sucks, not because "Transphobic bigots" are here to ruin their lives because they are less enlightened than you.

For real. I still don't know what people mean when they say they feel like a woman. What does that mean?

Can I feel like I'm a Hispanic, and feel like I'm in the wrong body every time I look in the mirror? Can I get mad when other people say I'm white, since I feel like a Hispanic (whatever that means)?

i guess the closest approximation i can come up with, and it's not a great one, is a former roommate of mine. she's black (light skinned), but was adopted by white parents and grew up in a a very affluent white area. she lives in Oakland now and has a hard time fitting in with black people. even though her skin color is black, she doesn't really identify with other black people and feels more comfortable around white people. she's not ashamed of her race of skin color or anything like that, but she just sees herself more as a white person than a black person. others have given her crap about it, but that's just the way she feels.

obviously gender and race are two different things, but they are both social constructs and mostly determined by what others label you as.

^^^^^My cisgender identity has not caused any of my 'rights denials' or 'attacks.' Many trans folks cannot say the same about their respective gender identity. Everyone might be attacked at some point or whatever, but not everyone is attacked based on their identity and the public perception of it.

And you really think the vast, vast majority of trans suffering is internally based and rarely society-based?

High percentages of trans folks report bullying, doctors refusing them treatment, harassment by law enforcement, their families refusing to speak with them, etc. I doubt they're making all of this up. I'd say being essentially or literally disowned by your family or being sent to conversion camp earns a little more than 1% of a bummer.

^^Could you please just wiki "transgender" or "causes of transsexualism" or "List of transgender related topics" or "gender dysphoria" for the love of god

You were saying Trans people were being beaten on the streets.

You then posted an article that claimed it was a "national crisis".

Yea it sucks being trans, yea people make fun of those that are different. At the end of the day though, the surgery is a DECISION they choose, so it isn't comparable to blacks or handicapped people.

It really is a shame that other minorities hate on something like this. There's even a general wikipedia article about it. Sad world we live in, I guess...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia_in_ethnic_minority_communities#Homophobia_in_the_African_American_community

Oh and you know, this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transphobia

I feel like all the dumbass retorts in this thread by a select group of roommates, or anybody else, that any rational person could either dismiss and ignore, can be defended by a really easy-to-find wikipedia article. That says a lot.

Again, go enjoy your Buffalo Wild Wings.

Transperson owns the BWW in Cary. Good friend of mine.

It's a shame though, she routinely gets gang-beaten on Sundays when she refuses to change the TV channel from Figure Skating to NASCAR.

I obviously love it when people live their lives as they please, and I'm uncomfortable when people don't, which is why I'm uncomfortable a lot of the time.

But I had feelings about this Caitlyn business that I couldn't put words on--just a little head tilt I had when eying the VF cover.

Anyway, my friend had the same reaction and sent this article to me:

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/06/07/opinion/sunday/what-makes-a-woman.html?referrer=&_r=1

It's a lot of words, but the conclusion kinda gets right at it:

Quote :
"Bruce Jenner told Ms. Sawyer that what he looked forward to most in his transition was the chance to wear nail polish, not for a furtive, fugitive instant, but until it chips off. I want that for Bruce, now Caitlyn, too. But I also want her to remember: Nail polish does not a woman make."

Meh, lets be respectful of his right to call himself a woman.

Theres more to being a woman than having tits and wearing a dress.

I thought it was a little ridiculous that they gave this issue over a half-hour on the ESPY's show last night. But I guess the ESPY's has been catering to the reality-show crowd for a while now.

Just my opinion.

Disney just gave it to Bruce for the ratings.

I'm sorry Bruce has a mental disorder that makes him feel out of place with his body... but don't discredit what was a great award by giving it to some vain, narcissistic, attention-craving man.
