Update: Bandai Namco has confirmed Dark Souls III is coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC--hence the reason Microsoft didn't tout it as an exclusive during its briefing. A European press release also suggests this will be the final game in the Dark Souls series. When contacted for comment, the company told GameSpot, "Dark Souls III brings certain story elements to a conclusion. With that said, we'll reveal more news about the future of the franchise in the coming months."

Original Story: Microsoft premiered Dark Souls III on its E3 2015 press conference stage by showing a short teaser of the game, which will arrive in early 2016.

The trailer showed an expectedly dark, gothic world; a crown; and a terrifyingly large enemy towering above everything else.

It feels like a similar setup for Souls fan: a new kingdom that has crumbled, a mysterious monarch, and lots of monsters.

Rumours of a Dark Souls 3 E3 reveal surfaced in early June, with reports that Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki was heading up the project.

Miyazaki served in a supervisory capacity on Dark Souls 2, with Yui Tanimura and Tomohiro Shibuya co-directing the game.

At the time, reports of Miyazaki's involvement seemed to clash with Sony Worldwide Studios' Shuhei Yoshida confirmation that a Bloodborne DLC expansion pack is in development.

Prior to the official announcement of a new Dark Souls, it was unclear whether Miyazaki would be involved with the Bloodborne expansion. Or if, as the rumour suggested, he had moved on to a new project.

As of yet, Miyazaki's involvement has not yet been clarified. The Dark Souls 3 trailer shown at Microsoft's E3 press conference did not mention Miyazaki, or say anything to the effect of "from the creator of the original Dark Souls."

I've really wanted to like these games but the combat always feels a little stiff to me.

Anyway, here's the trailer.

Playing on PS4. Got through the starter area, the first area, and I'm almost done with the second big main area. I've recently learned how helpful the bow & arrow is; not sure why it took me this long to get to that point, but this is my first 'souls' game so there's that.

Oh boy you are in for a treat!

I'll played them all, so I have that grizzled Souls-resourcefulness.

Starting "boss" guy was pretty easy with the pyromancer's fireball... didn't have time to play much farther. Definitely seems suspiciously easy compared to previous souls games though...

I hope its not too easy and not stupid hard. Dark Souls 2 was the hardest one to me (of the entire Souls series). I am going to play at least 3-5 hours before I make a judgment on the difficulty of the game.

Arriving tomorrow...am excite. First Souls game I'll own, although I dabbled with a friend's DSII back in the day and liked the bit I played.

I love this game. I've only played about 4 hours of DS1 and I'm already at like 50 in this game and level 110 or so. Such a good game

So, having never played a Dark Souls game in my life, I downloaded this to Xbox One and started playing last night. This game really just drops you off in the middle of a death infused hell hole. Little to no instruction as to what to do, how to do it, or even what the buttons are or how the menu options function.

The title screen should probably read, "Well...good luck...I guess..." In the first 3 minutes I rolled up on a sign that read, "Turn back." So I naturally kept going and got completely erased in about 2 seconds by some kind of ice demon. Lesson learned. So, I started picking the mechanics up and made it to the first boss, which took me about 15-20 tries to kill. I was getting pretty tilted. The thought of spending $60 on a game that I couldn't even advance past the first boss (10 minutes into the game) was really pissing me off. Then, everything just clicked and I beat him rather easily, all things considered.

The game is just nuts and I'm barely into it. Should be a fun and extremely frustrating experience.

That's pretty much how the game works. Generally, boldness is rewarded in boss fights. It's very critical to know what all the parameters mean on the level up screen too, take some time to read through those and i think there's a button to show "help" for these items.

3 does just drop you in though, at least in 2 the beginning has a sort of tutorial.

^^ The orange signs on the ground in the starting area tell you what each button does. What was your starting class? You should start with a Knight or Assassin. The Estoc is a really good weapon early on. For the love of God don't be a Thief.

Have just begun DS3 (late to the party). First Souls game, first playstation (Xbox) game, first pretty much anything not table top D&D or Pathfinder (or HoI4 on computer). Maybe I should start a series: Luddite Plays Dark Souls.

Started with Sorcerer and have made my way (tortuously) to the Crucifixion Woods. Not "gud" by any means.

No invasions or PvP as I play offline.

This makes me laugh.

Not only that, I didn't start as a Knight class.

I should concede that I played the old "gold box" D&D games back in the days of the 386sx computer with VGA graphics.
