Quote :
"Tom Cruise is poised to revive his career-defining role as enigmatic Navy pilot Maverick after plans to develop a Top Gun sequel were unveiled on Thursday.
Tentative plans for a follow-up to the 1986 smash starring Cruise and Kelly McGillis had previously struggled to get off the ground despite major backing by feted Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
But at a press junket in Berlin on Thursday, David Ellison, CEO of production company Skydance, confirmed a shooting script is in development – and the film WILL feature troubled fighter pilot Maverick, originally played by Cruise.

‘Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,’ he confirmed. ‘He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today.

‘It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters… it’s really exploring the end of an era.
He added: ‘It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.’

Ellison concluded by revealing that the action will once again be centered on Maverick - despite the character being 30-years older - although it is not known if McGillis, who played his love interest, will feature.
He said: 'There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.'
Speaking in April 2014, Bruckheimer - responsible for co-producing the first film - admitted they were 'closer and closer' to developing a sequel based on modern day warfare.

He told the Huffington Post: 'The concept is, basically: are the pilots obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay.
'We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer. Don (Simpson, fellow producer) and I tried to develop something; we didn't succeed. Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it.'
Screenwriter Marks, whose previous credits include Street Fighter and upcoming Disney adaptation The Jungle Book, was thought to be in discussion with Paramount over the script last August.
Top Gun made superstars of Cruise, McGillis and co-star Val Kilmer following its release in May, 1986.
Put together with a budget of $15 million, the film raked in an estimated $353,816,701 worldwide, making it the highest grossing film of that year."

I doubt Kelly McGillis will be back. Tom Cruise just doesn't age.

They already made this movie back in 2005 didn't they?

How pilots are ultimately better than drones?

The shirtless volleyball with Val Kilmer is going to be awesome. I bet Maverick and Iceman fuck at the end of this one to finally break that sexual tension for good.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say this movie will be hilariously bad. This is coming from somebody that loved Top Gun as a kid and some one who would definitely sex up an F-14 Tomcat if given the opportunity.

Yea baby, swing those wings out and let big daddy HOOPS slip into your cockpit.

Such a sexy machine.

I'm going out on a limb and saying Maverick does the nasty with a woman under 25 in this movie.

Sounds like this movie is going to explore the end of an era, it really is about exploring that end of an era, because that era is ending and we need to explore that.

Did any of the TOP GUN fans here see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? It was like Iceman from TOP GUN retired from the Navy, came out as a homo, and then becme "Gay Perry: Private I". Iceman was hilarious in that movie.

In the sequel/reboot, they'll all die:

Looks like this is becoming a reality.

I don't understand how there is room for a sequel. I mean, IRL, what is the average career length of a fighter pilot? Are we to accept that both Tom and Val are now competing officers or something?

Maybe Goose faked his death and they bring him back.

Only thing I can think of are that Maverick and Iceman are now in the role that Viper had (if Val Kilmer is even coming back for this). They'll prob have a new cast of young pilots played by Michael B. Jordan/one of the Hemsworth brothers/etc. and a generic hot girl. It will be forgettable at best.

Not sure Val is going to be a part of this, but he REALLY wants to be - http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/25/entertainment/val-kilmer-top-gun-2/

I was a pretty big fan of Creed. Don't think that film is "forgettable at best"

maybe top gun 2 will be an indictment of the massive government waste on building the F-35.

I FUCKING HATE THIS CONCEPT. Background: I'm a Naval Aviator who flew P-3C Orions, Taught primary flight training, and is going to Fly MQ-4C Tritons ('drones'). I will graduate with my Masters in a week from the Air Force Command and Staff College who primarily teaches theories of airpower.

When 'drones' become fully autonomous I'm willing to have this debate, but we've been flying unmanned aircraft since the 80's. And if you want to get really technical, both sides messed around with the concept in WWII. It's not new, and it doesn't particularly drive a culture shift.

NOPE. That was the case like 20 years ago, but I have multiple friends that are required to wear corrective lenses in the aircraft. Also, lots of folks get one of the two surgeries (Lasik or PRK).
