On 9/11? And 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were Saudi citizens.... coincidence?

Apparently, the crane was operated by Bin Laden firm.

The Hajj starts 9/21. It's a good thing this happened prior to that, otherwise it would've been much worse.

obligatory, "Yeah, fuck those dunecoons".

Ignorance aside, having been to Mecca a few times myself, this could have been much, much worse had this been during Hajj. But it's really sad that 87 died.

Has anyone there thought to run a structural analysis on Masjid Al-Haram? Not that people caused the crane to collapse, but my god, look at all the people in there.

The spirit of Allah will hold our weight.

^ LOL awesome

But lightning can melt cranes!!! Second link ITT shows crane hit by lightning just before it collapsed, plus there were extremely strong winds and rain.

The death toll is up to 107 now.

The structure is fine - no part of the permanent structure has ever crashed or caused deaths, as far as I know. The government spends a lot of money on the building and expansion (current phase about $20 billion) using international experts and engineers. What does cause deaths every few years during Hajj is stampedes.

I am really surprised that so many TWWers know about the Grand Mosque, Hajj, etc. Down here in Louisiana many people don't even know about Saudi Arabia!

Sad that's surprising.

I'm not saying it's not surprising (maybe not on TWW...but prob would be surprising in the broader American population)...just that it's sad.

^ yeah probably not surprising for tww, after all, tww is full of geniuses

I'm not saying TWW is full of geniuses, haha...just saying it's a college educated population, and with some more savvy than even average for that population.

(of course there are plenty of dumbasses, too)

lol that's what i meant too, i just said it a bit sarcastically, remembering the "what's your SAT score" threads where so many users report in the 1300-1450 range and yet the NCSU average is 1150 or 1200

I just really do not understand this. I am an ex-muslim, and have been to these places and experienced these types of people and situations, but I still don't understand WHY this happens. I understand being "driven" by the opportunity and feeling that comes over you when you are in the presence of such a holy place and what it means for you and your religion, but why can people not have the decency and human compassion to not stampede over other humans?

I pose this question - would the same happen if these were Christian pilgrims?

A list of other stampeded from wikipedia, although none are on the scale of this recent stamped in Mecca:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_human_stampedes

A few:
Quote :
"June 30, 2000: The Roskilde Festival disaster, in which 9 people were crushed during a Pearl Jam concert at Roskilde Festival, Denmark.

February 20, 2003: 100 killed in The Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island, many of them trampled.

January 2005: 265 people were killed as Hindu pilgrims stampeded near a remote temple in Maharashtra, India.

August 31, 2005: 953 people were killed in a Baghdad bridge stampede.

November 28, 2008: A worker died at a Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in a Black Friday stampede.

May 4, 2010: 63 people were injured when a panic-driven stampede broke out during the Remembrance of the Dead ceremony on Dam Square, Amsterdam.

November 1, 2012: 5 girls died in a panic-driven stampede during a Halloween party at a municipal arena of the city of Madrid, Spain.[32]

February 8, 2015: 28 people died after a stampede that occurred at a football game in Cairo, Egypt"

So, what I'm seeing here is that the majority of these are either panic-driven (somewhat justified I suppose) and/or in the middle east/asia.

I don't know how to answer that question.

I was raised Muslim but haven't practiced it or believed in it for more years than I did (that just means I am old lol). But even when I did practice it till my mid teens and believe in it till my late teens, it was only because I grew up in it, not because it made some amazing sense and definitely not because I felt some kind of spiritual connection, such I never did.

While all religions I have looked at have amazing things and injunctions in them, they also all have things that don't make any sense at all, contradictions, and downright wickedness, cruelty, and other similar good stuff.

So, I don't know how to answer that question.

Most tramplings occur in eastern nations, at least I think so. Eastern people definitely have less group-dynamic manners and morals than Western people from my experience in several countries over 2 decades. At the same time, I do wonder if that was all 4 million Western people, how they would have reacted. I think in that case they would have been organized enough to not let a situation arises like that in the first place. What I read said that two large groups of people walking at 90 degrees to each other meet at an interaction, but I don't know why that would lead to stampeding.

^I totally agree 100%.

I'm glad i'm not the only mid-eastern, muslim raised person who has made these same observations about "our peoples". Easterners most DEFINITELY have less group-dynamic manners and morals in my experiences.

And i'm not ONLY talking about massive groups like at Hajj. I'm also talkin' standing in lines at grocery stores, the race outside to get your sandals at the mosque, etc. They are freaking intense, and annoying.

What sucks is a lot of the people who end up trampled are the people who try to stop and help those who have fallen and just get pushed over themselves by the rest of the assholes who dont give a shit.
