why does everyone bike now to network instead of golf, having a bike is now a requirement for professional development

I have nothing against golf, but I am glad that it hasn't really been a big networking factor in my career. I just don't have any interest in learning to play and I have successfully avoided ever swinging a club.

our office tried to organize going to a Durham Bulls game. when management said we had to use leave time to attend it quickly fizzled and died.

also, our office "parties" aren't allowed to have alcohol even if we provide it. actually, I think we're not even allowed to drink a beer at lunch either (never seen anyone order one).

meanwhile, my friends at startups and software companies have "beer days" where the office provides beer and/or you're allowed to bring in your own beverage of choice.

Golf sucks but I have a few co-workers who love it. I feel like if I'm going to be outside all day I'd rather go do a real outdoor activity like mountain biking, skiing, climbing, etc rather then walking around on artificial turf whacking a little white ball around with expensive metal poles.

On that note I bike everywhere now and it's great for networking.

Which part of it is hard? The entire road and mountain biking culture in Denver is centered around drinking. You usually go straight to a brewery after a long ride and socialize while drinking.

Also bar hopping via bike is fun too although I'm not trying to promote drinking and biking.

Golf is fun...but it's time consuming and expensive. I don't think I'll pick it up as a hobby again until I retire. There are other things I need/want to do on a weekend afternoon than play golf for four hours.

I also drink and bike all the time. Normally don't get black out drunk and stick to the back-roads...but parking downtown sucks and the risk for a DUI is much higher in an automobile.

try drinking while you are biking and see how many looks you get, it's just not nearly as easy to chat and drink biking than it is playing golf

what you are talking about is going out for drinks, and just taking a bike to get there. the trend for biking is just going biking

Skiing is very affordable assuming you live close to a ski resort. Saying it's not affordable because you have to fly there and get a hotel is like saying surfing isn't affordable for me because I have to fly to a beach and get a hotel. Not a good argument.

So a typical season pass is $450-550 for half a dozen resorts or so. Say you go 30 times a year (very reasonable as our season here in Colorado goes from November to June if you want to ski that late.) That's 8 months of skiing of only 3-4 days of skiing a month. Say you buy a $530 ski pass that's under $18 a day to ski an unlimited amount. Golfing (at least from my limited experience is more than $18 for 18 holes).

As far as equipment goes you can go to a ski event over the summer and pick up a nice set of skis (with bindings) for $300-400. Boots you can get for cheap as well. If you're not getting 50-60% off your equipment then you're doing something wrong or really need current season gear. Or you can get season rentals of everything (boots, skis, poles) for like $150. Helmet, gloves, goggles, and ski jacket/pants don't cost that much if you know where to look.

So for under $800-900 (excluding gas) you could technically ski for 8 months straight an unlimited number of times at a ski resort. Hell you could get season rentals for $150 and go to the numerous back country spots and not even buy a ski pass.

Skiing is very affordable compared to many other outdoor sports. I mean how much does it cost to play 18 holes of golf at a decent place on a weekend? $50? $75? I ski the top rated resorts in the world for $15-17/day.

I'd agree here. Most people who bike have at least 2-3 bikes and if you're spending $2-3k on each bike (that's not even super expensive bikes) plus gear you could easily have $4-6k in bike equipment. There's probably more people who spend that much on bike equipment than that much in clubs.

Owning a +$3,000 carbon framed bicycle and a spandex suit is not a requirement to enjoy cycling. I've found that I have enjoyed the sport so much more since ditching the spandex bandit rides and opting for the more social side of the sport. longer miles, slower pace, more conversational and less intimidating.

there is nothing worse than a cycling elitist.

^^^I think it depends where you are and the culture. The entire road/mountain biking culture here in Denver (was different in Charlotte) is very casual, friendly, and social. Everyone goes on longer road and mountain bike rides and it's very fun. Even the serious bikers aren't elitist about it in my experience. The experts aren't as casual as something like climbing (which is universally known for having very chill people). I wear spandex commuting because it's been almost 100 degrees lately and it's much more comfortable than wearing shorts. I also have a 22 year old Cannondale use for commuting that's probably worth maybe $200.

Anyway that wasn't my point though I completely agree biking doesn't have to be expensive. Neither does golfing. You can pick up a set of cheap clubs and go to a public golf course and it's cheap.

You entirely missed the first point I made. A large portion of the nation doesn't live near a beach where beach sports are accessible or near a lake where lake sports are accessible or maybe even near a golf course that's accessible. I was just pointing out that just because you aren't close to a sport doesn't automatically make it expensive. Factoring in the cost of travel and lodging into a sport doesn't really make sense because there's too many people who live in too many places. If you live near a particular location that lends itself to a certain sport then certain ones are definitely more expensive than others.

Or free...myself and many people go ski in the mountains for free. You don't have to buy a pass and when you do it's incredibly cheap per day (as I said I ski at resorts for $15-17/day).

Either way the comparison I was making was between golf and skiing and if you live near a golf course and live near a ski resort then golfing is more expensive.

What does that have to do with anything? I know where many of you live and some of you guys talk about it all the time. How's that a big deal? I was giving my opinion on golf, biking, and other outdoor activities. I don't think it really matters where you live just your proximity to certain types of sports.

Well depending on where you live it kinda is...

My point was if you live near a ski resort or snow in general skiing is very accessible and not elitist. Every weekend in the winter I see a bunch of people hitching rides up to the mountains to back country ski. Sure skiing CAN be elitist if you have nice equipment and buy ski lift passes every day you ski but in general it's one of the cheaper activities I do.

No matter where you are you usually have to pay for golf. Skiing is free unless you want a lift pass and then it becomes very cheap if you get a season pass.
