They will probably think it is really fucking weird that:
-We drink the milk from other animals, intended for their young.
-Slap our hands together repeatedly when we get excited
-Keep animals as pets
-Cannot communicate with other humans because of language barriers

The last is one of the criticisms folks have made of sci-fi. Many of its planets are monocultures where there is a single language, religion, etc.. You could argue we few that as an ideal or eventuality, but it's certainly not the case on our own planet and won't be for a while. 10/19/2015 2:08:50 PM |

I wonder what aliens call our solar system. since we just call it "the solar system"
we have cool names for other systems but not our own 10/19/2015 2:32:09 PM |

I often wonder how our handle on music and the arts compare to what may exist in other rivaling lifeforms.

Is this stuff really that strange though? We are intelligent enough to know the nutritional value of milk from various animals. Slapping our hands together is an easy way to make a sound without straining our voices and is universal regardless of language. Humans are social animals and the companionship and comfort that pets provide is something that an advanced brain has developed over thousands of years. Earth is big and there are a lot of different cultures here. At this point in our technical development there hasn't been a need for one universal barrier. We've been getting along fine like this for a while now.10/23/2015 1:38:57 AM |

Gold gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or some place. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head - Warren Buffett 10/23/2015 4:02:44 AM |

not nearly as bad as that all these primitive alien cultures somehow speak perfect American English on star trek: TOS, at least in TNG they came up with some universal mechanism idea which I assume is telepathic somehow and a part of their communicators10/23/2015 4:07:41 PM |

star trek would have been much cooler if every 30 minute episode involved solely trying to figure out how to communicate with a new alien race. 10/23/2015 4:14:57 PM |

god you people are idiots. the universal translator is really good at decoding alien languages. this is star trek canon. there have been a few episodes where it didn't work too well (skin-flaky people on DS9, Darmok, half of enterprise) but the programming has been designed to interpret new languages and does a pretty good job at it thanks to none other than Hoshi Sato.
and besides the 1970's cartoon series (which was awesome) there has never been a 30 minute star trek episode. 10/24/2015 12:10:43 AM |

Whatever, you get my point that a universal translator was necessary for the show.
Also I still think a language based on metaphors is a really, really dumb idea. 10/24/2015 1:36:09 AM |

kind-of interesting VOY episode where the universal translator failed completely and the captain had to go on gut instinct: http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Nothing_Human_(episode) 10/25/2015 1:45:00 AM |
