ib vinylbandit and thegoodlife3 bend over backwards to defend this

[Edited on October 29, 2015 at 8:24 PM. Reason : or is that only if it's female SNL cast members]

So is this a remake of the original or a remake of the remake?

This is gonna be tricky because those guys played the roles so well. Why not just do something else with the chicks and give us another Ocean's film?

because Hollywood as a whole can no longer come up with good creative ideas and pay the bills by making films based on established brands

That's not entirely true. I am sure that there are great ideas floating around for an all-girl Heist movie, it probably just wouldn't sell as well as if it didn't have a brand attached to it.

I don't know why, but I'm more okay with this than the Ghostbusters remake.

Oh come on!

The witty, comedic banter between the main crew is outstanding. One of the reason that the second one was a disappointment as they strayed away from that for a bit.

^And the plot was abysmal (granted it was during the writers strike). Seriously, it pulled the "nothing that you saw during the movie even mattered" card.

I believe they stated they would not do another Ocean's film with that crew because Bernie Mac died. They did not feel it would be right.

what's there to defend? it's another franchise reboot of a franchise that has been rebooted multiple times. this time it happens to have women starring as opposed to men. you're against that why, exactly?

for whatever reason some people are unable to handle an all-female cast in anything. that's the basis of all of the "defending" in the Ghostbusters thread.

Movies like Kill Bill have happened.

[Edited on October 30, 2015 at 1:48 PM. Reason : also Death Proof while we are at it.]

The existence of an action movie with a female protagonist (Kill Bill) does not preclude others from being made.

But I couldn't give a shit about Ocean's Eleven or Sandra Bullock so I don't care about this.

^ a good majority of the villains and minor characters in that film were female. And in Death Proof, nearly every role except for the lead villain was played by a woman. It was some pioneering stuff. He went from writing and filming dialogue about crime and gangsters to basic girl talk.

Oceans 11 and Oceans 13 were awesome movies. I even liked 12 myself but it wasn't as good, objectively.

But I'm not gonna white knight some movie because of equal rights and whatnot. Oceans 14 with a bunch of different male characters wouldn't pass the test either.

Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter give this movie credibility and potential. I'm also a fan of Sarah Paulson.

But what disappoints me with these attempts at female remakes is how many of them (or really, how few of them) are written and directed by women. Ghostbusters didn't fail because the cast was no good, it failed because Paul Feig didn't know what to do with them.

Gary Ross is the writer and director. He wrote the script for Big, so I can trust he knows how to create a fun story, and he wrote and directed the first Hunger Games, so he has experience with strong female leads but that was based on someone else's work. He also has Pleasantville and Seabiscuit on his resume. But I'm still skeptical of how he will handle an almost exclusively female cast.

Sandra Bullock's character has access to a lot of make up while in prison.

^Agreed. Although this reminds me that I can't remember the last movie I saw her in where she is playing a "normal" person in a modern day setting.

I liked Ocean's 8. The cast was stellar, there were some really fun moments to see, each character had something real to do. The cinematography wasn't as great or as creative as the Clooney trilogy but it was still pretty good

My only complaints are pacing and motivation. Introducing each character one by one and giving a backstory dragged and was unnecessary (compared to how we only saw about 15 seconds of each character in Ocean's 11 except for the three main leads), and even though we got to see the backstories very few of them had any actual clear purpose for participating.

^You have to go back to the Frank Sinatra original for the last time that was done well. Ocean's 12 tried to have higher stakes and failed miserably.

This wasn't nearly as good as what came before.

Still fun, but not as good.
