So ... I'm moving back ot the US after two years next month. I haven't had an American cellphone since then.

What's the word currently??

My wife had a iPhone 5s that she can reuse (it was T-Mobile) or resell.

We'll be living back in North Carolina for 4 months, and then moving to New York for two years. Any advice on what to look into ??

yeah...i think back when I got my SIM card I had to cut it down to fit the micro or whatever slot I have. not sure if they still ship those big ones or not. either way no biggie.

and if you think you can do without much/any mobile data and are interested in being especially frugal check out Republic Wireless for less $

[Edited on November 6, 2015 at 1:34 PM. Reason : but then you'd have to get a new phone]

[Edited on November 6, 2015 at 1:36 PM. Reason : for a crappier network]

i'd go for tmo over straight talk. unlimited everything including tether and free unlimited international text and data for $50/month

[Edited on November 7, 2015 at 2:22 PM. Reason : also, all verizon mvno's are severely throttled to ~6/2mbps MAX]

Isn't that only 1GB of LTE though?

You can also tether with ST.

that's just 1 GB data at high speed. for 3 GB it is $60, and 5 GB is for $70. also 7 GB for $80.

without the tethering and int text, it is $40, $50, and $60 for 1, 3, and 5 GB respectively.

no it's not. i have unlimited everything with no throttle

I've use it in the netherlands, barbados, UK, and germany and my bill has never changed

looks like 'officially' tether is limited to 7GB but there's no overage fee. I don't regularly do more than 7GB so I haven't had an issue, but I've definitely done 10-15 a couple times.

[Edited on November 8, 2015 at 11:48 AM. Reason : the only time i'm throttled is internationally, where i'm capped at 5/5mbps]

I was just going by what's posted at http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/individual.html since you mentioned $50/month = individual plan

Quote :
"Unlimited talk, text, and data while on our network in the U.S., plus in Mexico and Canada.
Up to 1GB of 4G LTE data (Speeds reduced after 1GB)"

Family plans say the same thing though:
Quote :
"Line 1 / $50 per month
Unlimited talk, text, and data while on our network in the U.S., plus in Mexico and Canada.
Up to 1GB of 4G LTE data (Speeds reduced after 1GB)
Line 2 / $30 per month
Unlimited talk, text, and data while on our network in the U.S., plus in Mexico and Canada.
Up to 1GB of 4G LTE data (Speeds reduced after 1GB)"

[Edited on November 8, 2015 at 2:35 PM. Reason : looks like unlimited LTE is $80/month for the first line and $60 for the 2nd]

^ You must have had a special offer or something, if you indeed have both unlimited for $100 total.

http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/family.html

According to link above, for $100, the following combinations are possible:

Line1 - Line2

$50/1GB - $50/5GB
$60/3GB - $40/3GB
$70/5GB - $30/1GB

both unlimited is $80+$60

I also see this at the top:

Quote :
"LIMITED TIME!
Families can get 4 lines for the price of 3 with up to 10GB of 4G LTE data per line. That’s $30/mo. Per line!"

However, if you try to price 3 or 4 lines using the link above, there is no option of 10GB data.

as a former ST user, i'd take cricket over ST any day

$70/month for two lines (or $35 for one with autopay discount)...unlimited talk, text, and data (first 2.5GB at 4G)...or you can do $90/month for 2 lines ($45 for one with autopay) and 5GB of 4G

ST used to charge tax and fees on top of their monthly rate, too...not sure if they still do, but the cricket prices include them

granted, that's at throttled speeds (8Mbps on 4G devices, 4Mbps on HSPA+ devices), but i was under the impression that most (if not all) MVNOs operate throttled

also, you can only use cricket, AT&T, or unlocked phones with cricket...locked TMO phones won't work AFAIK

I have been a Verizon fan for a long time, but the data seems to drop out a lot now, who has ATT and can tell me how that works?

no one has mentioned cricket...

I have have 5 lines unlimited talk, text and data (3gb before throttling) for $100 a month. All using AT&T's network. I haven't seen a better deal anywhere.

^ nice, that's 3GB of LTE for each line?

Or is it 2.5GB per line? https://www.cricketwireless.com/5for100

Either way great deal if you need a bunch of lines.

[Edited on December 31, 2015 at 8:42 AM. Reason : If he just needs 2 lines ST has double the data for $100]
