The whole mizzou situation strikes me as very odd. I have several family members who are alumni, 2 of them graduated last year. This is the first time I've ever heard of anything racially charged in Columbia. It's a pretty liberal school and Columbia is a pretty liberal town.

What's more, I'm not sure what the university president was supposed to do about the incidents that sparked this stuff. Someone having a racial slur yelled at them from a pasing car, a shit swastika draw on a dorm wall (I'm a bit suspicious about that one), and some other stuff that frankly the university president couldn't have done a damn thing to prevent. He's basically been forced to resign as a sacrificial lamb to hopefully quell some of the anger that is still brewing over Ferguson. There are a lot of students there from St. Louis, so I get the anger and the connection, but this whole thing seems more than just a bit off the wall.

I think you missed his response to being asked about systemic oppression. He was criticized before that for his lack of response to those incidents. That is what set the ball in motion to have him replaced.

Ehhh, it's a lot less racist than most places. Honestly, outside of St. Louis and some super redneck areas of the ozarks it's not a racist state. I lived there for the first 11 years of my life. I had never even heard the word nigger until I moved to North Carolina.

I understand, student groups wanted a response, but I'm not sure what he could have done that would have been satisfactory.

The atmosphere on college campuses today is insane. Between the whole safe space movement, no platforming speakers, and trying to chill the speech of professors, it's all backwards. Students are supposed to be the ones who are pushing boundaries, not asking for the administration to be more paternal and protect them from uncomfortable things. This generation of human beings worries me greatly.

Wait, creating a safe learning environment worries you?

Boundaries can be pushed without harming people for being different.

No, the idea that main stream discussion of topics are so dangerous that they shouldn't be allowed on campus worries me.

The chilling effects on speech that an environment like that creates worries me.

The idea that having some feminist speaker on campus who doesn't believe that all drunk sex is automatically rape is not something that should be excluded from a campus.

Honestly, it seems like every student should be issued a fainting couch and their very own human sized gerbil ball.

Whatever happened to the idea of challenging ideas and healthy debate being part of the learning experience?

Why does "pussy" have to be confined to a gender? My gender is fluid, maybe I identify as a penis-pussy hybrid and am offended by both terms when referenced as a derogatory statement? You cis-gendered bigot scum.

Don't forget, a bunch of protesters surrounded his car during a parade and he refused to get out and talk to them, that apparently was a grave injustice on his part.

One thing that gets mentioned quite frequently is that a little while ago he cut grad student benefits. I'm thinking a string of vague "he's not doing enough about racism" accusations was just what the doctor ordered to make him pay for that.

The conspiracy theorist in me says this had more to do with some dispute between the athletic dept and the university pres, than issues of racism on the campus. I only read a single news article and a bunch of invective on reddit, and I couldn't figure out what the players were made about.

The big question is had the football team been having a good season, say playing for the SEC East title, would this have still happened? I guarantee you the answer is no. Sure is a lot easier to take a stand when your season is already over.

you may be right...but there's no point in discussing that hypothetical considering the players actually did do this. so, imo, that's hardly "the big question"

This is what happens when you teach some of the most privileged people on the planet that they are constantly and unfairly victimized by their institutions.

The institution has to do anything to appease the lynch mob of outrage culture. Claim victimhood, spread a hashtag, take out a scapegoat or 2, and pat yourself on the back.

"The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson offered, “There are a lot of African-American students and other minorities who feel for whatever reason that the campus was not made to be a friendly, accepting, and supportive place.”

“But whats are those reasons? What are the specifics? I’ve been reading since this photograph was taken, looking for specifics of systemic actions that have made students feel exclusive,” said Scarborough. The photograph that Scarborough referenced features the entire Mizzou football team locked arm-in-arm that was Tweeted from head coach Gary Pinkel.

“I don’t know what those specifics are,” admitted Robinson.

Scarborough interrupted to fire back, “Isn’t that troubling Gene, that you don’t know? A Pulitzer Prize winner? This guy is run out as President of the University because the football team said ‘we’re not gonna play’. And neither you nor I reading these articles know what he did to invoke this type of response. Is this a complete failure on the national media to report?”

Scarborough wouldn’t relent, asking again, “What was the fireable offense from this President specifically?”.

It seems the faculty wanted the president out, and the race card, the ultimate weapon, was used as a matter of last resort, despite having no substance behind the accusations.

The "Race Card" has turned into the modern "Think of the Children" trump card. If you argue that something wasn't racist or someones actions were NOT a result of racist thoughts then you are being racist and insensitive.

Just like how MADD and "Christian" parents growing up and still today lash out with the "Think of the Children" whenever they are fighting against something that they don't agree with but lack a logical argument. If you argue against them you obviously don't care or hate children.

LOL
I guess it's not TOO late for NCSU students to shut down Raleigh over the TP noose in 2007 creating an inhospitable environment.

The other example I was able to take from the article was some drunk douche shouting a racial remark during some African-American Homecoming meeting.

If these are symbols of oppression then I guessed this country is fucked

http://www.themaneater.com/special-sections/mu-fall-2015/

So after reading this, I'm not sure where the narrative that this is "about Ferguson" came from. Seems like several other administrators and political figures had lost faith in Wolfe, including a group of faculty, for a myriad of issues. The people protesting about racism were just the icing, causing a disruption on campus, and then the football players were what finally made Wolfe step down.

Of these same events had happened at any University over such a short period, I'd think there wouldn't need to be protests to get someone fired, it would have just happened.

As an aside, even though Thomas Jefferson was a rapist and slave owner, it's dumb to remove a statue of him on this basis, someone needs to talk to those students.

Huh? There was a surge in mosque vandalism after 9/11 that hasn't dropped to pre 9/11 levels, and there were at least a few arsons in America and a rash in Europe. You'd have to be pretty delusional (which it's well established you are) to think there's not a lot of people who have a prejudiced fear of Muslims which manifests as hate crimes, vandalism, and GOP presidential candidates.

Are they? I've never seen studies but that seems a dubious statement. I don't think racism aligns along party lines.

Are we confusing ideology and political affiliation again like we do all the time with old southern Democrats?

I've always heard older black alums say that Chapel Hill was really racist but I always dismissed their claims as "its still the south but they have no idea how bad it could be at a place like state" . Its also funny because liberal whites usually have equality in mind while southern blacks are usually ultra conservative and don't support economic equality even though they want racial equality.

I can't see how this could possibly go wrong.

Oh lordy, I just read some interesting stuff about the poop swastika and the hunger strike grad student.

No evidence exist that poop swastika even happened (no photos, no eye witnesses named, no RAs at the dorm it allegedly happened ever saw it, etc.). Yes, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but you'd think somebody would have documented it since it was allegedly a racially motivated act of vandalism.

Hunger strike guy comes from a family worth well over $20 million. His dad made over $7 million last year.

This is all starting to drift further into the realm of the absurd.

So much oppression. A vague reference to some drunk person yelling something mean to someone at some point, and someone writing an anti-semitic symbol with their feces in a bathroom.

These poor college students overcame so much oppression bravely tweeting things on Twitter. Rosa parks, Dr. King, and Harriet Tubman don't even know what adversity is in comparison.

Who shall the outrage culture lynch mob target next! Hey you! I heard someone say the N-word 20 years ago, WHERE WERE YOU THEN BIGOT? Hunger strike until you kill yourself.
