Teacher asks 13-year-old Muslim student if she has a bomb

Quote :
"ATLANTA -- The father of a Muslim middle school student says a teacher asked his daughter if she was carrying a bomb in her backpack

The school's principal has apologized for the incident, according to a spokeswoman.

Abdirizak Aden said the teacher at Shiloh Middle School in Georgia stopped his 13-year-old daughter, who wears a hijab, and asked if she had a bomb."

Quote :
"Sloan Roach, a Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman, told the newspaper that the school's principal has apologized to the family.

"The remark was not appropriate, but based on their conversation and investigation," school officials don't believe it was made with "ill intent," Roach said."

Principal has apologized? How about the principal truly show s/he is sorry by firing her? Imagine if she said to a white student "where is your KKK outfit?" or to an African-American student "how many white people do you want to kill?"... I doubt she would have stayed in her position.

And rolleyes at no "ill intent". That joke between friends is one thing, but a teacher making that joke on a 13 year old student? Seriously? Well, if the teacher is so God damn stupid that she doesn't know that's a terrible thing to say to a student, fire her ass.

I guess we will be seeing a lot more cases such as this one if Trump becomes POTUS.

- well, it's sunday, of course it is slow!
- he should, this is worse than the clockboy incident.
- i suppose not, seeing as how the principal apologized.
- no, no clock this time, just a backpack and a heartless moronic teacher.

Then this wouldn't even be in the news because it doesn't fit a narrative

then the kid would get expelled for complaining about it

and the parents would probably lose their jobs too

and someone would burn down their house and never get solved

she didn't actually "invent" anything, she just took a bomb apart and put it in a backpack.

I'll put this right here.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/18/us/virginia-school-shut-islam-homework/

Quote :
"All schools shut down in Augusta County, Virginia, over Islam homework

(CNN)After a teacher at a Virginia school handed out a standard homework assignment on Islam, such an angry backlash flooded in that it prompted officials to close every single school in the county as a safety precaution.

"While there has been no specific threat of harm to students, schools and school offices will be closed Friday, December 18, 2015," Augusta County Schools said. Extracurricular activities were shut down Thursday afternoon.

And social media exploded over the school lesson -- a simple drawing assignment -- into a caustic discussion about religion and education.

Draw this
When the world geography class at Riverheads High School in Staunton rolled around to the subject of major world religions, homework on Islam asked students to copy religious calligraphy.

It read:

"Here is the shahada, the Islamic statement of faith, written in Arabic. In the space below, try copying it by hand. This should give you an idea of the artistic complexity of calligraphy."

The illustrative classical Arabic phrase was the basic statement in Islam. It translated to: "There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah."
"

Quote :
"But that hasn't been enough for Kimberly Herndon, who kept her ninth-grade son home from school.

"There was no trying about it. The sheet she gave out was pure doctrine in its origin," she told WHSV.

"I will not have my children sit under a woman who indoctrinates them with the Islam religion when I am a Christian," she said."

The textbook publisher picked a terrrrible quote to have students practice, IMO, but it's ultimately the parents' job to steer their child in the way of their preferred religion.

If this had been simple cursive, and the quote was from a Christian text detailing the same message, the schools wouldn't be shut down, but you could bet the farm that atheists would come out of the woodwork and the ACLU would be all over it.

This, as well as other anecdotal events across the country should give lawmakers and politicians a good idea regarding how the general public feels about Islam in general. Sure, maybe for the most part they're ignorant "low-information voters" from both sides of the spectrum, but there really is an anit-Islam feeling with the majority of people in this country. I don't know how to fix it, and I don't know if it can be fixed, but that is the trend.

I think most politicians, and people on the left, believe that people generally feel the same way they do, and can't believe or understand when the opposite is actually true.

This is why Trump is going to be elected president.

^^^ Wait, the assignment is one issue, but someone explain the leap of logic from a calligraphy assignment to shutting down schools?

Quote :
"Security scramble

Back at the school, the sheriff and administrators had begun worrying about security.

On Monday, Augusta County issued a letter reassuring parents that schools in the county were safe. It did not refer to the homework assignment but did say that parents had become worried about security.

"All doors are locked with the exception of one front door. ... Faculty and staff monitor all activities inside and out of the buildings." Standard security procedures, the letter explained.

But as the week went on, officials got more specific about the source of concern -- calls and email messages -- and their target -- the world geography class.

"The school division began receiving voluminous phone calls and electronic mail locally and from outside the area," the school system said. And the "tone and content" were nasty.

The sheriff deployed more officers to county schools and began monitoring communications. Then all the schools in the county shut down."

This is linked in that paragraph: http://www.augusta.k12.va.us/closings

Does that mean people called in with threats to the school? If so, this should go into the White Terrorism thread.

You fix it the same way it was created, by getting pundits to talk about Islamic terrorism in rational ways rather than hyperbole. Universal studios, until last year, had a restaurant called "Garden of Allah". It was only after 9/11 that people lost their minds about Islam and it didn't help that the right wing news media fed these fears. Even Bush would come out and say don't blame Muslims, something a modern day GOP candidate would have to choke out.

The fact of the matter is that they way we communicate is really important, and if you watched the last GOP presidential debate, they were frothing with baseless anger nearly the entire time. If you want to know why people are scared it's because many of our leaders are making them scared. We won't fix the problem until we fix the communication on the issue.

I remember learning about the pillars of Islam in school, Islamic art historically is known for its mathematical properties, it was even Islam that helped wrench Europe out of the dark ages. Our issue with Islamic extremism is a modern problem borne from specific polices (not the least of which was a preemptive war). If educated people and leaders can discuss this rationally, then the rest of people will eventually follow.
