I heard frasier fumbled his 1st 2 carries of the scrimmage last week. Any truth to this?

Frasier apparently fumbled on back-to-back carries, I'm not sure if they were his first 2 carries or not.

Finley granted a 6th year by NCAA, so he's now a RS-SO.

QB Depth now looks like:
McClendon - RS-SO
Finley - RS-SO
Meyers - RS-FR

Will be interesting to see who wins the starting job and if they can entrench themselves as a 3 year starter.

Will also be interesting to see if the QB not named starter transfers. Doubt Finley is going anywhere, but McLendon? Wouldn't surprise me.

I know it's a new offense this year, but we've spent the past two years grooming McLendon to to take over for Jacoby. The fact that there's any question as to who the starter is this close to the first game (assuming it's not a lame attempt at gamesmanship by Doeren) already has me questioning McLendon's ability, and if he ultimately loses the job to Finley, I wouldn't lament his transfer other than what it would mean for depth at the position.

The last time the qb battle went down to the wire, it was between Jay Davis and Marcus Stone. We all remember how that turned out.

Didn't Glennon/RW go down to the wire after that?

Looks like it was a three man race between evans, wilson, and glennon in 2008. I didn't remember it that way, my mistake.

By grooming you mean he's been the only other scholarship qb we've had, right?

It wouldn't surprise me to see Finley start the opener. It also wouldn't surprise me to see him not playing at all by the 3rd or 4th game.

And Glennon never really challenged Wilson, despite getting lots of reps with the first team.

[Edited on August 24, 2016 at 9:59 AM. Reason : I don't think the starter was announced until right before the game, but glennon would have died.]

McLendon would have to sit a year whereas Finley could potentially play at 3 diff schools over the next 3 years if he wanted

Either one would have to sit a year to transfer. Unless McLendon graduates this year. I imagine Finley *could* transfer again without sitting if he finished his masters degree. I don't think anyone has actually done that though.

I think technically you just have to have graduated and say the first school doesn't have your degree. Not sure he would actually have to complete a post grad, maybe could say that wants to 2nd post grad. This is all guesswork though.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the NCAA wouldn't let him transfer again without sitting out a year unless he actually graduates.

right, glennon was a true freshman. don't think he ever really had much of a shot unless he just blew everybody away. i think beck was still around then too.

Some people watching practices have said that Finley pushing for the starting job has more to do with Finley playing well and less to do with McClendon stinking it up.

Remember Finley won the starting job at Boise St. before getting hurt, think he has the tools and knows the offense really well. Pretty sure both will play against W&M.

No one will transfer yet, but yeah it wouldn't shock me if Finley won the job and played great that McClendon would look around. Seems the staff is pretty high on Meyers and the incoming QB for the next season(McKay).

When they inserted him into games last year, it seemed they were keeping Brisket in too long and risking his health, yet when he did play, it was only for very short periods and he handed the ball off a lot. It always seemed to me that if they were "grooming him" then they would have played him much much more and gave him some real plays to run.

^^Doeren seemed to make comments about "it'll be nice to have a back up QB that we can get experience, and also allow Brissett to do more things without being worried about injuries" since McLendon was redshirting Brissett's first season but was available to play last year. yet, even with those comments, it didn't seem like Doeren ever made an effort to get McLendon real playing time even when it would've been easy to do so in some of the early blowout games.

^DD was trying to pad stats for Brisset's Heisman run.

http://www.espn.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/84744/building-some-heisman-hype-for-jacoby-brissett

Quote :
""For one quarter last September, Brissett and our Wolfpack were the story of college football. We led Florida State 24-7 and Brissett was making Heisman-worthy plays. It didn't last, but Jacoby had a really badass first season, passing for 2,606 yards and 23 touchdowns and running for another 529 and three scores. That's as solid a QB as I've ever coached. If we can complete an upset or two and emerge as a surprise contender in the ACC, Brissett will get more than 15 minutes of fame. I'm talking Heisman guys.""

from doeren's presser today

we'll rotate QBs each series...they'll decide later who is that "starter", but will rotate between Finley and McLendon for the W&M game. he did say he was pleased with how both have looked in practice...granted, that could just be coachspeak.

also said that Thad Moss (TE/JaySam position), Nick McCloud (DB), Kelvin harmon (WR), Trae Meadows (DB) will be the only true freshmen they expect to play....the rest should redshirt.

Harmon (3) is listed at 6-3 196 but i think ^ is more accurate.

i agree. i'd be cool with rotating them a bit, but every series is kinda crazy. won't allow either of them to get into a groove. we'll see how it goes. i'm not one who thinks it's completely stupid to go into Week 1 with the plan to play both QBs...but if you alternate every other series, i don't see how you can really see how that gives an accurate representation of the QBs.

maybe Doeren meant "alternate every few series" as opposed to alternating every single series.

Its a great idea to do that against an opponent like W&M to compare the qbs in relatively similar game situations. If you made it 2 or 3 series, the game could already be 28-0 before qb2 gets in. Hines will probably return a kick and the defense may score. I'm fine as long as we have a guy by ECU.

Quote :
"The truth is, NC State's line may already have been one of the nation's best. While the unit overall was a mixed bag at times last year, the line was spectacular. Against Power 5 foes, NC State ranked third in the ACC in pressuring the opposing QB without blitzing, trailing only Boston College and Clemson -- two of the nation's marquee units. The line made contact with the opposing quarterback on 22 percent of its non-blitz rushes, eighth-best in the Power 5. Of FBS teams, only BC and Clemson had a higher percentage of rushing attempts stopped for a loss or no gain."

I want to ask everyone to post their final preseason expectations one last time. Specifically in regards to DD earning another season or not. The reason is because this is certainly a make or break year for him and I don't want anyone's emotions to get in the way of clear, attainable guidelines for weather or not the coach should be fired. I know this is your opinion but I want everyone to report how they will be forming that opinion so I can know who is speaking with their emotions during and after the season. If everyone does this, there will be no question about who is or isn't trolling on the situation.

We will lose games to our rivals and some of the games probably will be ugly. Our rivals will have good seasons and you will liekely get shit from neighbors, coworkers, and classmates. None of that means the coach should be fired based on your feelings.

My expectations/requirements are simple. We must go 6-6. Anything less is unacceptable and grounds for dismissal and anything better will tell me that we are headed in the right direction. 6-6 specifically leaves me on the fence of wondering why we lost those 6 games, looking at bowl results, and evaluating from there.

I'm not asking you to be specific but I am asking you to be transparent and upfront. If beating UNC is the only thing you think matters, then you should state that now as opposed to calling for the coaches head after we have a decent season and get blown out by unc.

[Edited on September 1, 2016 at 6:53 PM. Reason : It would be nice if you used the "My expectations/requirements" format for easy reference]

Or if we lose to ECU, which is probably a bigger embarrassment.

I realize I'm getting this in after the game. But I largely agree with EMan. I would agree with ^^ that it's gonna take a really awful year to get DD fired. 3-9 or 4-8 would probably do it. But I don't think 5-7 is getting him fired. So in that sense, this isn't a do or die year for the staff. But I do think it's a make or break year for how the fans view him. The fans will turn on him (those that already haven't, that is) if we, say, lose to Wake and ECU early and appear headed for a bad year. missing a bowl will put a ton of pressure on him going into '17. A 7-5 season with a nice win over UNC or Miami or somebody of significance gives the fans something to be excited about. Anything less than a bowl is certainly a disappointment, and while it may not cost him his job this year I do think it will cause the fans to turn on him.

So I guess that's my expectations/requirements

My expectations are 6-6. Anything less, DD should be fired. 7-5 would be good and anything better would be unbelievable. My hope is we are good enough to win the games we should and maybe steal one from Miami or UNC. I think both those teams are overrated. The other four games (ND, FSU, Clemson, UL are likely double digit losses).
