Quote : | "RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina State University professor resigned Tuesday, one day before he was charged with stealing from three student groups he advised, officials said.
Charles Scott Whisnant, 57, of 1013 Flanders St. in Garner, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of embezzlement.
Whisnant was an associate professor in the Department of Animal Science.
The treasurer of the Animal Science Club tipped N.C. State auditors off to discrepancies in the club's bank statements on Jan. 14, and University Police began investigating five days later, officials said.
The investigation expanded to Alpha Zeta Agriculture Honors Fraternity, the agriculture honors society, and the Agri-Life Council, an umbrella organization of recognized student groups in the College of Agriculture of Life Sciences.
Authorities allege that Whisnant withdrew in excess of $65,000 for personal use from the organizations’ accounts over the last year.
Almost all of the organizations’ funds come from fundraising activities by student members." |

I was an agri-life representative for a year and they were stingy as fuck about distributing money to the sub-participating student organizations. I was briefly involved with alpha zeta and they were stingy as fuck too. Where tha fuck was all that money hiding at when I was in school? 2/10/2016 8:49:17 PM |

^^ I was involved with them too...they each had the money but the point of having it, we wrote in, is that you must use it all each year.
It's easy to tell when someone takes out money...especially 65k worth.

A highly trained Phd scientist, with really a more or less petty crime that is non-violent? Although it was a substantial amount of money it's not that bad of a crime within itself. If he stole 1k or 65k makes no difference really. I'm sure a small college would be interested in recruiting him once the smoke clears with this. Maybe at his interview, they'll shut the door and everyone will look out the corner of their eyes at each other and bust out laughing and say "welcome to the club Scott HAHAHAHAHAHAHA". 2/11/2016 1:51:35 PM |

And you have to consider he probably has enough money to hold himself for quite sometime and probably has no mortgage payment.

Why are you defending him? The dude stole (over several years) $65,000 that was raised through fundraising by students (and yeah, the amount does matter). I don't know much about the legal system, but I would think he might be spending some time in prison.

No one is mad; it's just a bit strange that you're acting like this is no big deal. And this isn't really a case where "we don't know what happened." It's not like it's a he-said, she-said kind of case. I'm sorry if he's unable to find a job after this, but the fact is, he made the decision(s) to do what he did. He has to deal with the consequences.2/11/2016 2:48:27 PM |

No, you didn't. What you said was that embezzling ~$65,000 (if true) from an employer and a government agency is a "more-or-less" petty crime; that such a crime is "not that bad," and that stealing $1k or $65k makes no "real" difference.
So presumably, someone stealing your car vs. stealing your ipad vs. stealing your coffee cup makes no real difference to you; should be considered a "petty" matter in any case; nor would make the perp a "bad person?"2/11/2016 2:49:22 PM |

If he hasn't already hit retirement already, I imagine there's some sort of clause where embezzlement will bar him from getting retirement.
And not saying he won't ever get a job again, but it should be as podunk Community College in Eastern North Carolina or something.2/11/2016 2:49:56 PM |

why
you make almost 100k a year. Roughly half to taxes, so 50k take home. Why steal 65k which is roughly take home pay for a year? Now you got caught, lawyer fees, lost your job, going to have get a shitty 40k job now. why do this.

While I never had him as a professor, I remember seeing this guy around back when I was in undergrad and hearing all the animal science club members dropping his name. These were the type of people that took the club way too seriously and were all trying to jockey for position and approval among faculty so they could get recommendations for their vet school applications. I always got the impression he had relationships with his students similar to Slughorn from Harry Potter. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a case where seedless is defending a former mentor rather than old Scotty he "worked with back in the day." The dude fucked up. There's no reason to blindly defend someone's actions just because you know them. 2/12/2016 1:21:29 PM |
