Quote :
" Judd Apatow isn't nearly as popular as he used to be and most people don't care about who produces a movie."

to people who care about comedy enough to go see a movie in a theater, Judd Apatow 100% still matters. this isn’t about most people. “most people” isn’t a demographic

Quote :
" I also haven't seen much marketing for this film."

does it really need to be pointed out that just because you haven’t seen something doesn’t mean that it isn’t happening?

from the New York Times piece linked on the previous page:

Quote :
" Universal Pictures booked “Bros” onto 3,350 screens and spent an estimated $30 million to $40 million to promote it."

that’s a lot of money to promote a comedy

Quote :
" You didn't answer my questions though. How much better would this film have performed if it was a straight couple (best guess) and what's the closest analog to this film?"

I don’t have the metrics that are used for tracking/predicting what a movie will do during the weekend of its release, but this is from the Variety piece that started this whole debate:

Quote :
" Billy Eichner’s Universal-backed comedy “Bros” flopped at the box office during its opening weekend with a $4.8 million bow, about half of the $8 million to $10 million that the studio projected."

I’ve never claimed that it’s only homophobia that is to blame for it not making as much that it was projected to, just that it was a factor

The trailer never looked enticing. Seemed like a hodgepodge of actors I like in a movie that tried way too hard

I saw Diggstown (1992) for the first time last night. It's a pretty good movie.

I liked Get Out and Us. I haven't seen Nope, and I didn't realize he directed the new Candyman.

he didn’t direct the new Candyman, he was a producer on it

everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I have a hard time seeing how anyone could think Nope was terrible

I liked barbarian, but thought it was a little over hyped. Just a solid watch, but nothing ground breaking. But I guess even decent, well made movie is getting harder to come by these days.

Ugh. Smile.

**Spoilers*

I wanted to like it. It dealt with some heavy themes. But in the last 20 seconds of the film, I ended up so disappointed. I was really thinking the cycle would be broken, but no, the movie ended the exact same way it began.

^^just watched Smile myself. It had a very good buzz so was looking forward to watching it. I thought it was pretty well made and shot, but I found it to be pretty disappointing. It was pretty much just a slightly altered premise from The Ring, but not as creepy or well done. Might have been better as a shorter segment in an anthology movie/show

On the topic of Barbarian [spoilers below]:

Can we get past this trope of the "monster" being a tall/thin/super strong mutated old woman? I feel like this has shown up a lot in recent horror movies. That being said, I did like the way the movie went overall. I kept expecting Bill Skaarsgard to be some kind of psycho and it would just end up being him stalking the main woman the whole time. Started to get annoyed at the hype behind it thinking that would be an overdone premise, but glad it completely changed directions and he ended up actually being a completely normal guy.

^when he was sleeping on the couch the first night, was he having some unrelated bad dream / health issue, or was 'the mother' supposedly causing whatever was going on with him?

Poker Face is about as bad as the terrible reviews it's gotten. Visually it looks ok but it was not a very good movie.

I just watched violent night expecting full-on camp and violence

Definitely violence (although they worked up to it). Did their best to actually tell a story and make it somewhat believable while still delivering on the campy one-liners.

100% enjoyed.

Also surprisingly looking forward to cocaine bear (and it does appear to be 100% campy based on the trailer).
