Seriously, I've always thought this to be a stupid way of trying to brighten someone's day.

"Yes, person behind me who overspends on coffee too, let me finance your caffeine addiction so I can feel like I'm making a difference in the world...nevermind that you likely aren't poor, and don't need my help...it will help ME feel better, and isn't that what this is really all about?...nevermind that I could mentor an underprivileged youth or volunteer at habitat for humanity, or donate my excess coffee $ to charities helping the homeless or working on cures for cancer...the fact that you can have your triple, venti, half sweet, non-fat, caramel macchiato on me, and have the joy of paying for the $30 order of the car behind you, helps me to sleep at night...and God knows I need the help with all of this delicious starbucks coffee I'm drinking!"

I have my own coffe maker, and it costs fractions of what it'd cost at Starbucks. McDonald's coffee is actually pretty good and much cheaper. People who spend money at Starbucks are fools

They paying it forward part happens to me constantly at McDonalds and walmart. Thanks for paying attention to the main point of the story, the fact that Starbucks exists.

Besides other problems with this, it's also really annoying for the baristas to have to explain this to every car. I'm sure they're relieved after someone finally says no and drives off with their free drink.
