What gen? Do you have something exactly in mind you want it to do (Autox, DD w/ smiles, canyon carving, picking up the ladies)?
I've never owned one but I keep finding myself randomly browsing Craigslist for a cheap one that doesnt seemed ragged out, basically for a BRP blast car. 5/29/2016 11:06:42 PM |

Picking up ladies and DD w/ smiles mainly. Will have my '11 TDI til the buyback but don't have much left on the warranty, so I'm going to park it. I have only ever owned practical vehicles and I figure it's time for a gokart. There are a bunch on craigslist for 5k and under and I plan on looking at them in the next couple weeks. Will be checking out compression and service records, etc. It's tempting to get one that's been modified, but would much rather have one that's bone stock and go from there. Going to have to change the driver's seat or do the gas pedal/ foamectomy thing, because I'm over 6'. I figure I'll be able to sell it in a year for close to what I pay, so why not, right!?

if the goal is for the car the to offset a lack of game when it comes to the ladies, the miata is pretty damn far down the list. might even be behind your vw.

5k seems reasonable. could get this https://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/5577017332.html and a flyin miata turbo kit https://www.flyinmiata.com/custom-turbo-system-na6-chassis.html for 6500, but then I'd have to build it and I'm really just trying to get a fun car to drive. Would defeat my intentions to start a project like that but man, I rode in theDuke866's back in the day and that thing was nuts. 5/30/2016 1:18:15 PM |

I picked up a 2006 ("NC") miata for 6400 with 125k on the clock with some new bits (top, tires, clutch). It's a bit beat, but it's cheap, appears to be reliable so far, and is fun to drive.
Compared to my recent cars (eg M Coupe) it's insanely weak but you can basically drive it at its limits 50% of the time you're on the road which is nice to actually 'get out and drive'. She's a dog....a fat dog.....but it's involving and fun (go kart fun, not truly fast fun). It would get old everyday if you're serious about cars but it's a fun thing to putz around town in. 5/30/2016 8:56:43 PM |

I have looked around at s200s but they are 2-4 times the cost. I really can't afford a car over 10 grand until I can get out of this Golf, and it would certainly be something practical. The TDI buyback could potentially start as soon as June 20 something. It all has to go through the court system though, and I doubt it will be so soon. I figure it would be smart to drive something cheap that won't depreciate much, and then move back up to something nicer with more space when the need arises. 5/31/2016 1:04:22 AM |

I find it pretty humorous that you're concerned about driving your VW out of warranty. Must have a pretty low opinion of your Golf, LMAO.
NC Miatas are the ones to buy right now. Underappreciated and undervalued, they're pretty competent at the track once modified accordingly. 5/31/2016 8:45:59 AM |

I sold my GTI just before the warranty ran out. Don't trust em. The sentiment is common imo.5/31/2016 8:59:00 AM |

Well honestly I really like the golf. I don't like how at 80k I had to have the whole intake manifold replaced due to a problem with an integrated flapper valve, and then right after at 90k had to have the DPF and EGR replaced, which technically was not under warranty (emmisions system only covered til 80k and since it was a "filter" it did not fall under my extended warranty). They ended up doing it for free though, under their "goodwill" initiative or whatever.
I'm afraid if I get it out of warranty that the HPFP is going to grenade and take out half the fuel system with it. If I though I was going to keep the car I'd go ahead and replace the pump as preventative maintenance. The pump itself is only $800. The kit of parts to fix the fuel system if the pump dies is $3k, and who knows what labor would be on something like that.
I miss my '93 integra which I bought for $1500 with 150k and continued to drive another 100k with no major issues (til I let it sit a couple weeks and it filled with moss). I did have to replace the ignition module twice (once to drive it off the yard where I bought it) and once again years later. Replaced alternator, brakes, and cv joints. I could do it all myself with no problems. I want another car like that!

^ This... The 94 and 95 models are the most desirable of the Na models iirc, partly because of the slight power increase. 6/1/2016 11:42:38 AM |

The '94 is slightly more preferred due to the functional oil pressure gauge (the one is the '95 is basically an idiot light), but one of those two years is the way to go if you want to mod it and not have to worry about OBDII. 6/17/2016 2:10:09 PM |

Fuck some OBD II. With that said, I don't mind it in a car that has a cult following with enough parts to sustain the car beyond its years; including the corvettes, miatas, Subarus, etc... 6/17/2016 2:51:09 PM |

Awesome car by all accounts, however...
"sub 6 second 0-60" should really come with an asterisk. Because the only way that's happening is if you dump the clutch at around 5,000 rpm. And nobody's doing that, especially on the street. 6/20/2016 9:31:07 AM |

I bought a MR2! For real! It's younger than I am, barely, and it's my new hour and a half each day DD.
156k, some rust, plenty to fix. Blown shocks, tired synchros, but I just changed the trans fluid and it seems much better now. Thinking about the future with this one... Have to fix this driver's side floor hole and some spots on the corners, but the pinch seam is mostly good.
tldr; my first rwd sports car, replacing my '11 golf tdi, bought instead of a miata, only $1600

Those pictures make it look super clean compared to your description. Do you have engine plans or keep it relatively stock for DD? 9/11/2016 2:07:14 PM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
It has a somewhat recent decent paint job that is hiding all the nastiness. It's not severly rotted (tap test) but each corner has a little at the wheel wells and there is an actual 3" hole in the drivers floor board.
The interior is damn clean. There are only a couple minors cracks in the dash but the steering wheel is peeling. I want to do something about that soon.
Going to replace pads, shocks and bushings, steering links, and ball joints when my order comes in.
I'm thinking about lining up a 20v 4age swap but I'm going to do a compression and leak down test first and weigh my options.

I don't understand. you had a comfy, fuel efficient daily driver. Now you have a really long commute, and you pick a n ancient, loud, uncomfortable car that needs work to do it in? 9/11/2016 6:51:00 PM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
It's really not that bad. Plenty of room inside compared to miata, and it cruises well. I got 32mpg on my first tank doing my daily commute.
I like that this car is interesting to drive. Most of my commute is highway, but I feel like I'm doing something other than waiting to get there if you know what I mean.
I can't keep driving the TDI, or I would. I don't want to take it over 100k before the buyback, or I get penalized on mileage at least.
The toyota is easy to work on and I have plenty left from my original budget, so I can make improvements to it in the meantime. After the VW buyback check comes I can get something practical again, while keeping my fun, semi-practival toy as a weekend/ project car.
I don't lift, bro, so no worries 9/11/2016 7:28:59 PM |
