So, I did one of those ancestry DNA tests to see where my roots lie. Turns out a significant portion of my genetic makeup comes from Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo. There were also traces from Western Europe... most likely rapists slavers.


So for many people in this world, being able to trace your roots back is taken for granted. I've always been very jealous of those people that can trace their heritage back through the ages. Myself, everything just kind of gets jumbled once I go back into the slavery era.

I did the Ancestry.com thing a while back. My DNA test showed, like, 99% England. I started piecing together the ol' genealogy and stopped when I hit the inevitable slaveowners. It's basically "some dick left England and settled in Anson County, then his family spread out to Montgomery County." Like a big who gives a shit.

My sister is a genetic counselor and we just went through such testing, for fun. We always thought we were part native American because of our looks and a long-lost part of our family was traced to Oklahoma and we just figured.

Turns out, we are Spanish! No native American at all. And some English and Irish. We got something like .00001 percent African.

I'd like to do the DNA thing. I have an extremely common last name so that side of the family could be practically anything in Europe. I know that of my great grandparents I have German, Polish, Irish, Scottish, English, and Welch roots. The Irish part is by far the best documented. My great x 8 grandfather founded Gaffney, SC with a pub and I'm listed in the town registry of relatives.

Iberian, West African, and Finnish here! I'm also English, but I pretend I'm Scottish cause that's way cooler.

I'm not American Indian or North African at all, which was surprising.


I dunno...the whole DNA testing thing has been interesting. Like, tracing ancestry through records would probably not have revealed anything related to Finland or West Africa.

The family photo albums my parents have show lots of photos of people who moved to Iowa from Germany and Luxembourg. Last time I was home a distant cousin of mine said she went over to Luxembourg on business and all of the grave stones over there had the same last names on them as the ones in the local graveyard in our home town in Iowa.
