She is a victim of terrible parenting. Parents who think they have the right to kill majestic animals for fun, animals which take years to grow and mature sexually.

I, in fact, have no problem if they ate the animal or donated the meat to the locals. But only of there is a need, and not just to overeat.

If it is just for fun, damn them. She is only 12, and not beyond reform. Ideally, she should be taken away from such asshole parents and given to a normal decent honest hardworking family.

There are a couple examples of trophy hunting I'm fine with. For example, shooting an older male rhino that is no longer breeding so that a younger male can take its place. To get those licenses you typically need to pay 30k+ and all the money goes to conservation resources. It's good for the overall species.

Shooting a giraffe needlessly though? Just why? They seem to be extremely docile.

My real problem is the same as people climbing Everest or running a bunch of marathons. Once a 12 year old girl does something, shouldn't that be the point where everybody just kind of shrugs and moves on from that activity and crosses it off the list as conquered by humanity?

^personally I think it is a shitty thing to teach kids, but I'm not that kids parent either.

If you are going to teach a kid to hunt, you oughta be sure the first lesson is to always have respect for the animal. This includes using every piece of that animal.

But I can assume this girl comes from a trophy hunting family and community that shows off their latest great kill to everyne they see in the next 10 years so I imagine it was more of her upbringing, but that would be speculation. I am also guessing the average 12 year old doesn't have this undying urge to hunt their first giraffe without a lot of suggestion and encouragement .... but I also wasn't a kid that liked to kill things so I may be out of the pond with this one

My point is: if you are ethically ok with killing animals (I am), then how can you condemn what this girl did?

Because she didn't need it for sustenance? That's true for a huge % of animals killed every year and it was still consumed by orphans, so it was used.

Because she did it for "fun?" id argue hunting is more complicated than just fun, many might disagree (debatable)

Because she took a selfie? I'm sorry but killing a giraffe is an opportunity very few people will ever get and people Instagram everything under the sun, I don't see the problem.

Because it's an exotic animal? That's just an emotional response. Giraffes aren't exotic in Africa and they aren't endangered (this is actually slightly debatable according to the quick skimming I did, their total numbers aren't fully agreed upon)


I just don't see the difference between killing a giraffe and eating a steak off my grill. The end result is the same to the respective animals.
