At the time they left Markell, Yurtseven, and Kapita had not committed. They could have competed. I think they would have still helped a lot. Water under the bridge now.

Creighton is ranked so I am not sure how disappointed one can be losing to a ranked team early in the year. Yeah maybe Creighton is overrated, but who the hell knows at this point.

Yeah Creighton is decent, but I think we are a top 15 team so we should beat them IMO. I'm sure NCState shit is looming, but I haven't been this excited about a men's bball team in a long time.

^^^True enough, but being inside the program they may have had a better idea of what was coming ahead of the actual signing.

i think it's pretty obvious Dorn and Henderson (who were on the team) and even Mav were gonna be cutting significantly into the Martin twins minutes this season. and in all likelihood they wouldn't even be starting on this team even if Kapita, Yurt, Markell didn't come here.

not trying to make it sound like i'm glad they left, but they could probably see the writing on the wall that Dorn and Henderson were gonna shoulder a big load this year and take a lot away from the Martins

This is going to be a really good (and fun) team. DSJ has already shown what he can do, and will be significantly more consistant over the next month. Hendo showed us what we were missing last year. Another REAL scoring option who could close out games down the stretch. And Kapita was so much more encouraging than I ever expected. I was thinking he would be in the mold of a Nard Freeman, but that guy has some real offensive skill. And like someone mentioned, he is already our best defensive big man.

I didn't like losing the Martins because of what it signaled about the program at the time but I don't miss having them now. They were streaky, played angry, and seemed self-interested as a pair. I think they wanted to be somewhere they could be the stars of the show much like they probably were in high school.

Love the team we have this year and I'm excited to see what happens since we have a really high ceiling, but I'm also hoping that if things don't work out like they could/should that we can at least return the majority of them and build on it next season because with this talent level and having that time to really gel, we could be looking competing for it all (not to undermine our chances this season).

You do realize they finished high school at Oak Hill, where they definitely weren't the stars of the show, right?

I think they left for a myriad of reasons. I think the return of Dorn and Henderson played a large role, as well as Gottfried's obvious preference for playing Rowan despite Caleb being more talented both offensively and defensively. I think biggest reason is that they wanted to play at the same time and knew it wasn't going to happen here.

The key problem with this analysis is that it's wrong. Per 247, Caleb was highest ranked recruit on that team, Cody 2nd. Cody also won team MVP. The other two top 100 recruits were BJ Stith, who washed out at UVA, an Shelton Mitchell who averaged 4ppg at Vandy before transferring to Clemson (will play this season).

Mav mpg: 33
Caleb mpg: 30

Huge discrepancy

I'm too lazy to go look up the stats, but I distinctly remember that Caleb got a lot of early season minutes and then Mav took most of those minutes later in the season.

guys aren't leaving because of playing time. there is a large enough sample size to definitively say that at this point. theres something else to it. most of the guys leaving are stars who would have been guaranteed big minutes

^It's not an NC State problem -- it's a college basketball problem. Our society is one of instant results and instant gratification. The players expect to play right away, and the people around them expect them to be stars.

We lost the Martins and Washington, but we got Trevor Lacey, Terry Henderson, Torin Dorn. It's not just us.

Duke lost 5-star recruit Derryck Thornton to USC and Michael Gbinije to Cuse

Wake lost Cornelius Hudson and Andre Washington

Not sure about recent UNC transfers, but we all remember Larry Drew and the Wear twins going to UCLA.

i'm honestly not sure what this means...i think you're saying that losing Cody Martin is no big deal but losing Purvis is a very big deal. Cody contributed last year certainly. but he's far from irreplaceable. Purvis on the other hand was a more higly touted recruit who has had inconsistent results in his college career both at State and at UConn. he hasn't lived up to his hype and, in hindsight, wasn't irreplaceable either. so that doesn't seem like a great example either.

Turner, Lacey, Henderson, Dorn...we've gotten our share of good to very good transfers in as well.

No, he is saying that Cody Martin may have transferred because he saw a future where his playing time diminished, whereas Purvis clearly left for "other" (read: coaching staff) reasons.

^^gotcha.

i'm not complaining about Gott yet. we've had transfers out. we've had transfers in. so far it's all been fine. perhaps it's not sustainable, but as of now we don't have much to complain about

Didn't purvis leave because he wanted to be a PG when he wasn't even recruited to be that?

What the fuck are you talking about? Every single player that we've had transfer can be directly attributed to playing time.

Tyler Lewis - Was going to be stuck behind Cat Barber...transferred to a place where he thought he could be a starter (kind of working out for him).

Rodney Purvis - Classic McDAA syndrome. Thought he was good enough to be a feature player, but definitely wasn't. Knew going into sophomore year that Warren was going to be the man. Also wanted to play PG to help his NBA chances...not happening with Cat on the squad.

Kyle Washington - Minutes were cut drastically in the 2nd half of the season because he sucked at defense. Was basically playing behind Anya, Abu, and Freeman. Maybe him and Gottfried didn't jive, but ultimately he ended the year at 4th on the big man depth chart.

Martin Twins - were either even or below Mav Rowan on the depth chart (and he's a full class below them). Practiced with and knew they would be below sophomore Dorn and a possibly two year Henderson (if he gets the 6th year medical redshirt). Not to mention that the PG minutes would be mostly taken by Smith. They were basically going from from 20-30min guys as sophomores, to 10-15min guys as juniors.

How is this even a discussion?

I think Deshaun Painter is the only guy in recent memory to transfer for non basketball reasons and he just wanted to be back home with his sick grandma (could have been another relative).

you guys are intentionally avoiding the fact that i said leaving and not tansferring. going to the d league or europe is an upperclassman version of transferring.

i personally think the big thing w/ the twins was that they wanted to play together. there's just not room for them at the 2 and 3 at the same time for 30 minutes/game on an acc team.
