I feel like wdprice3 isn't very familiar with the actual biology of addiction and how many people who are prescribed opioid painkillers, use them exactly as prescribed, and who otherwise have no history of drug use or dependency wind up getting addicted anyway.

If you're interested in easy 'research' outside of TWW, there is a good Freakanomics podcast on this. Also, the guy who did Bigger, Faster, Stronger did another documentary called Prescription Thugs (not as good a BFS) that addresses opioid abuse.

Like everything, there are multiple factors at play here. Big pharm is one. We [the US] as a society do a poor job of managing addiction in general, and Doctors are taught to limit pain whenever possible.

Mexico swoops in by halving the price of heroin and flooding the streets of our country with it and getting everyone addicted to the cheaper alternative.
Shady drug dealers lace the shit with fentanyl and everyone dies.
And your health care premiumsystem skyrocket all the while on obamacare.
s a beautiful crony capitalistic/socialistic love story.

Deaths are on the rise as much as 400% in some counties this year. Meanwhile the substance abuse industry profits as well from all the repeat customers

She was already in in-home hospice care, and once a month she would be taken to a type of nursing home for a few days. When she came back, she had too many patches on her. Her caretakers there claimed the other patches were older and had already been spent.

it can help abate withdrawal symptoms, but you have to be mentally and physically prepared to get off heroin and switch to methadone, let alone kick it all together. Weed is not enough of a high for heroin/opiate addicts, but it can help ease the pain when you are ready.

Lost one of my best friends from high school to fentanyl overdose

He got addicted to sleeping pills, that moved to hydrocodone, and eventually made it's way to fentanyl over a few years.

He was licking the patches and chewing them to get all the medicine at once instead of time release. Still think about him all the time.

He was a massive Panthers fan, and died right before the Panthers drafted Kuechly. Our friends still talk about how much he would have loved to see Cam and Luke play when we get together on Sundays.

girl died in my living room after overdosing on heroin about a year ago (roommates gf). It was 3 am and paramedics were at my house and I went downstairs to watch for 10 min as the medics revived her with narcan.

my room mate could not understand my outrage. He moved out pretty soon after.

I have met one person who I know actually quit. It started with a surgery to fix her shoulder, given a prescription and it went downhill from there. She went through multiple methadone treatments and other therapies to kick it, never lasted for more than a few days. Although she did do a pretty long stint on methadone once, but the clinic moved while she was being treated and she had no way to get there everyday. Then after 15-20 years of addiction and burning every bridge she ever had, she finally decided she would quit cold turkey. She locked herself in a room for 2 weeks, lost about 15 lbs (she was already small) and had a lot of hardcore flu like symptoms the entire time. Hasn't looked back since. The doctor told her people die that way, but she replied with 'I would rather be dead than continue this way'.

She has had some health related things since and whenever any pain is involved (no matter how small) the doctor will say 'oh here I wrote you a Rx for the pain" she throws it away in front of them and tells them she can't have them bc she is a recovering addict (which they should know since they have her medical history) and she will usually top it off with a rant about overprescribing

you can give it first if it doesn't delay CPR.

if you are by yourself and don't have it on you they would start CPR for a certain period of time, then get narcan and administer, then resume CPR. if you are with someone one person starts CPR and the other gets narcan. if you have it ready you can administer and start CPR.

Medics were doing CPR, they were shouting "no pulse" and then at some point I heard "weak pulse" and then they said something about narcan. When she came to and tried to stand up they told her to sit down bc she was "essentially dead" 30 seconds before.

I dunno exactly what the order was (it was 3am and I was freaking out that someone may be dead or dying in my house) but a few minutes after they get her to calm down they explained to her the narcan is what brought her back and asking her what she took. I am not an expert, but this is what I overheard
