Yeah the year we were preseason #6 was the year Miami won the ACC. They had Shane Larkin's kid on that team and LeBron in the stands.

No, him losing the locker room is what forced the hand. The team's performance was the symptom of the problem.

^This.

I don't understand how the national media seems to think you need to let things completely crash an burn into nothing before it's acceptable to drop a coach. If the writings on the wall why wait and prolong the pain.

I mean it's Mississippi State. He probably has to build that dog shit from the ground up.

He's a pretty seasoned coach and has been to final fours, and was runner up with UCLA.

lutz was on staff all season last year.

lutz is a fine coach. but we need to quite heralding him as some fucking guru that he isn't. he was an asset to the staff, sure. but let's not get too carried away. if he was so good he wouldn't be coaching a DLeague team right now.

those are literally the only two good games we can talk about. sure, let's talk about 'em. but they are by far the exception this year. if anything, winning games like that gives fans a tendency to think about "what could've been" and makes the multiple 30+ point drubbings that much worse. this year has been a total trainwreck, the VT and Duke games don't change that.

I would love to be at these games just to give Gott a good leaving party without having the stress of trying to salvage the season. It's over, let's move on and not burn any bridges in the process. He rescued us from some fairly miserable experiences under Lowe and brought in some of the most exciting PGs that we have had since before Herb. His teams were fun to watch and had a couple good NCAA runs. Be nice to the guy.

^that totally lacks context though. as a general statement, Gott should be "safe" given his results. but this year has been so absolutely terrible that we have no choice but to move on. the program has no positive momentum, the future with Gott looks bleak, his roster management has been poor, and he has 100% lost this team. this is not a case of our fans having expectations too high. this is a case of Gottfried crashing and burning after a good start to his tenure.

harsh dose of - these media guys just want to crap out a story based on the win/loss column and haven't actually watched any of our games the past two seasons.

why don't any of these articles mention the toxic environment that Gottfried created/allowed? I liked Gott and never thought this was how the 2016-17 season would turn out but you can't have players in open rebellion. period.

yeah its a completely different look having the 4 NCAA appearances happen at the beginning of the tenure vs the end.

Unfortunately its a bit of a dead period for the national sports media and this is an easy story to write.

After we lose out and lose the ACCT game, Gott will be 47-60 ACC which will be .439. Herb was 72–88 (.450) taking over a worse situation. Really tired of hearing this isn't justified because Anya got lucky on a last second shot.

the most infuriating thing is this whole attitude that Carolina and Duke somehow just have this monopoly on success. That's the thing that drives me crazy talking to a UNC fan, they somehow think its crazy for anyone else to think they can be good.

^^and they call us the lunatic fringe meanwhile they start threads on IC calling for Roy to retire anytime they don't make it to the Elite Eight or above.

^Lutz kept some semblance of actual coaching but he obviously isn't an outstanding coach or the savior of State basketball. Him leaving was a sign of things to come and problems in the program/staff but I don't think it was necessarily the dagger.

That quote wasn't just some media person, it was a quote from a "2nd tier coach" and their perception on our program. Coaches talk, agents talk, it isn't a huge community we are talking about here. I'm guessing a lot of coaches are saying behind the scenes they wouldn't touch this job. So regardless of the reality vs. the perception, the perception is what is important. It is a bad sign what the perception about our program is from coaches and media. We'll be disappointed in the results again because NC State fans think this job is better than it actually is perceived as being, by a long shot, even though I think in reality the right person could do just fine here and be successful.

The thing with the national media pushing the "Duke/UNC" narrative is that it elevates those programs to a mythical status, which is whats needed to push national ratings, not just for when Duke and UNC play each other, but anytime they play. Obviously, claiming that Duke/UNC is a level of success in college basketball that no other program can obtain is so wrong and lazy, but these sports commentators are not the sharpest knives in the shed, so what should we really expect from them?

Stole this from someone on twitter, but maybe there is a reason they are a second tier coach.

Late to the party, but holy loller at the Goodman/whoever article behind the paywall. So Will Wade may leave VCU to go to Georgia or his alma mater Clemson (thus turning down State), but it is unfathomable that Archie Miller may leave Dayton to go to his alma mater NC State?

These cats better thank their lucky stars they didn't join a profession where your logic has to be applied consistently or is questioned. There are so many logic gaps in these dudes' opinions it's sad they make as much as they do.

Pack Pride premium is saying that Keats is where the coaching search will stop if it goes that low. He's essentially on board if offered. Will Wade has also apparently expressed a high level of interest. If that's our floor, I can live with taking a chance on one of them.

I still think we should throw the bank at Greg Marshall if we can afford to. I don't think he's a pipe dream like some of you on here do, it's just whether or not the university is willing to spend what it takes to win. Archie is also a wonderful option but whereas I feel like we can outright pay for Marshall to come here, Archie will take more convincing. Chris Mack has come up a lot and I'm not sure what his interest level is but that would be a great hire, as would Scott Drew if he wants to escape the Baylor brand right now.

Still a long way to go and I think who we get will really depend on the IU / tOSU / Texas and other jobs opening or not opening up.

^^Sounds like Lutz was indeed the gel there. Players liked him the best, he did the scouting...he really was missed and it's obvious.

Dana Altman would be a GREAT hire, but Oregon likely to outbid us and no reason to leave that program.

http://www.scout.com/college/north-carolina-state/story/1755582-update-pack-pride-s-big-board

not sure if y'all can see this article or not if you don't have premium but

Quote :
"Now that Mark Gottfried is no longer head coach, NC State athletics director Debbie Yow will move fast to find his replacement. She has informed Pack Pride that she will use a search firm to assist with the process.

NOTE: Sources have indicated that NC State could be looking to spend between $3-4 million annually for a head coach, which would make every coach on this list attainable financially.

However, that doesn't mean that each coach will be in the mix and a legitimate candidate as the process materializes, but this is an opening list to begin the search process with based on information we've gathered from various sources.
As the search develops we will continue to update the board, removing and adding potential candidates."

PackPride List
Archie Miller (Dayton)
Gregg Marshall (Wichita State)
Will Wade (VCU)
Scott Drew (Baylor)
Kevin Keats (UNCW)
Mick Cronin (Cincy)
Andy Enfield (Southern Cal)
Cuonzo Martin (Cal Berkeley)
Chris Holtmann (Butler)
Greg McDermott (Creighton)
Matt McCall (Chattanooga)
Pat Kelsey (Winthrop)

There are also full write-ups on each coach including salary, buyout, age, background, and angle as it relates to us.

Luckily you don't have to be a member to see that.

Although I am considering doing the trial for premium this month just to see if there is any insider info on PP which I doubt.

I find it interesting that Yow mentions Kansas and Kentucky in regards to competing with them.(then again she mentioned Alabama type recruits and hired DD)

I think she's really aiming high this time. Might be a name we haven't considered making a move from a P5 conference laterally to NCSU.

Need to see what firm she's using and if it's the same one that got Mark connected.

the main benefit to having a premium membership (I use my friend's login) is filtering out all of the noise from the regular message board. occasionally there will be some tidbits here or there that may or may not turn out to be good info but those usually trickle down into the main boards sooner or later anyway.
