There is a growing belief that satire enables the things it mocks, instead of the other way around.
Is there a line that shouldn't be crossed, or does limiting comedic expression limit the evolution of ideas? 2/17/2017 4:36:35 PM |

The PewDiePie thing is what made me think about it, but it's inspired by a trend I've noticed. Did you think the "Death to all Jews" thing was innately anti-Semitic, or was it because people failed to understand the joke? 2/17/2017 4:47:36 PM |

I assume this is in reference to the pewdiepie stuff.
No, I don't think creating taboos is a good thing, at least when they can't be tied back to behavior that is actually harmful.
Part of the problem here is that certain groups have applied labels like "nazi" and "racist" so liberally that they're not useful labels. When you abuse language, you may be able to confuse people in the short-term, but in the long-term you're debasing the meaning of words. Maybe that's what you want to do if you're a postmodernist. 2/17/2017 4:48:17 PM |

I'm assuming this is about PewDiePie
I think it's fine as long as the person making the commentary goes out of his/her way to mock and belittle the beliefs or actions.
Example: RDJ blackface in Tropic Thunder

I'm unfamiliar with the PewDiePie thing.
Ironic bigotry is basically what put Sasha Baron Cohen on the map. Ali G and Borat are obvious commentary on anti-semitism, and racism in the US. I think overall its good, but i understand the abuse of language argument. 2/17/2017 6:50:44 PM |

ironic bigotry: when someone refuses to talk to or is an a-hole to former friends and family because they have different political opinions. the bigot often incorrectly thinks their victims are bigots 2/17/2017 9:54:05 PM |

Short of blatant privacy rights invasions or explicit calls for violence no speech should be curtailed. How an individual uses parody is up to the that person to decide.
On a side note, Milo is the CPAC keynote speaker. Which is sad for CPAC but I hope he is able to do it without any issues like the despicable show in Berkeley. 2/18/2017 3:20:54 PM |

This young nation has a long and storied history of protest. It's one of the linchpins of our democracy.

I'm a little glum that this is even a thread. Funny, silly stuff is always good, and even when it's misinterpreted, it still gets people talking...so that's good, too.
If some "growing" problem exists today, it's comfortable/loud ignorance, not satire.
Now let's got eat some dumb, tasty baby brains and put an end to this ridiculous problem. 2/20/2017 10:41:37 PM |

I was looking for someone to respond who believes "ironic racism is racism". I've seen that phrase in multiple places now. 2/20/2017 11:20:53 PM |

dont know what this thread is about but
trump reaction on twitter has ruined many accounts. i followed them because they have comedy skills and now its just trump hate
i dont get why people care what someones politcal opinion is because they are good at acting, shaking their ass while singing or sportsing
