We are to UNC what Wake is to us, except we're willing to admit that Wake is a rival, just one care about less than UNC.

it's such a silly argument. you can have multiple rivals. their own damn coach readily admits it's rivalry and a really big deal to him. but again, it's pretty easy to get under the skin of State fans.

The bball rivalry between us and Unc pales in comparison to theirs with Duke since the late 80s due to lack of excitement on the national level, because we haven't been competing for titles. However, in reality, on a local level, very few of your average UNC alum knows or is friends with an actual Duke alum. But they know plenty of state alums and want to win this game for bragging rights at the cubicle farm.

But I could see where the mercenary players for UNC like Joel berry who have no stake in local rivalries would only care about the "national" rivalry between UNC v Duke. But for fans it's not so black and white.

As for Football though, our rivalry with UNC is much much better than theirs with Duke, partly because we are a regional threat to their supremacy in the sport, and of course that we compete on their level and beat them fairly often. The chippiness on the field during these games reflects that this game means something to both team's players as well.

But nobody is arguing that State/UNC is the same as Duke/UNC. Just that a rivalry, on some level, exists. I’ve always said - if you have to tell anybody that will listen that it’s not a rivalry, then it’s probably a rivalry.

Ya'll let a UNC pg get you shook

Let's talk about my post instead, that we may need 21/22 wins to make the tourney. Can we get them?

@VT - L
UNC - W
@Cuse - W
@WF - L
BC - W
FSU - W
@GT - L
Louisville - W

This seems reasonable. Even if we lose one more from this (likely UNC) then we are at 20 wins. We should hopefully pick up another win or two (upset hopefully) in the ACC tournament.

UNC being ranked this week is a joke but it is also helpful for us to pick up another ranked win on Saturday. I think we get in with 20 wins considering the big wins we have also had. Going 4-4 in the next 8 games is a good return IMO.

It doesn't matter for us if unc is ranked or not. They are still going to have a great RPI/whatever which is what matters.

I know @WF and @GT are on the road, but I'd say those are 2 of the games we really should win. Both would go under the bad loss column for us if we lost to them.

I'm really tired of this rivalry shit, because I can hate every bit of that team and their fans without calling it anything. However, I will say, when you blow a team out by 51 like a cool breeze, you can say whatever you want.

Thanks, Gottfried.

I don't care what UNC says about beating us by 50 last year, we fucking beat then our last game in their house.

Also, I haven't looked it up, but I'm fairly certain our win % against Duke the last couple of years is clearly better than theirs. Perhaps WE'RE Duke's biggest rival now?

Let's all hope for a 2OT heart-breaking loss for UNC tomorrow night.

That 51 point loss is extremely depressing. I'm glad Keatts is a winner. Not a loser. By 51.

i think its a little misleading when you look at our rpi. the intent isn't to schedule a bunch of high end shitty teams over low end shitty teams.

when you look at the teams at the top of our schedule, its good. Arizona, Tennessee, and Penn State is not a terrible OOC slate. RPI is out of context on this one.

None of those are "intentional" games

And the intent may not be to schedule high end shitty teams but Gott proved that works

It's kinda crazy that state fans keep arguing that OOC SOS doesn't matter when we have more first hand experience than anyone that it can absolutely save you

yeah, and we're not supposed to win either of the next two either

but they're each ~30-35% so we should get 1 of the 3, and we need to if we're trying to stay on the right side of the bubble

where's that UNC game thread at AstralEngine?

I feel like Roy was getting hard watching us get destroyed by VT. Basically giving him a game plan. I hope UNC expends all of their emotions/energy against Duke tonight.

Haven't been on here for a while, but does everyone despise how Al Freeman plays like I do? He is a poor shooter, average ball-handler, below average defender, poor rebounder and poor passer who is undersized for his position and kills the offense with his constant attempts to go 1 on 1. Why does Keatts keep rolling with this guy? Something I'm missing?

Well, he's not a below average defender and he's a pretty dang good rebounding guard (averaging >4 RPG). But yes his poor shooting is maddening sometimes. Also 6-3 200lb isn't really undersized for a shooting guard.

I think you're overreacting a teeeeeeeeeeensy bit.

He's by far the worst defender on the team...Braxton is a close 2nd.

And it's not that he is a poor shooter, he takes poor shots. Big difference.

90% of his shots are ones that we should bench him for taking. He doesn't pass the ball enough and tries to go 1 on 1 and isn't athletic enough to cover.

He somehow caught fire against UNC and I'm ok with that.

That said, he's all we have. We don't have a deep bench. IMO Batts should have taken Beverly's minutes last night or moved Braxton to the 2 and let Batts take Freeman's minutes.

I know this will ruffle some feathers but I'm actually more frustrated with Abu than Freeman. Abu is the most clumsy athletic person I've seen play. It seems like he progressed 0% since year one, and can barely dribble. Freeman is like an enigma. If we're losing big he goes "fuck it might as well play hero ball" and if we're winning big he goes "ok, I can play like a dumbass as we still got this."

I think Keatts wants the theoretical player Freeman is. The gunner type who can force offense when the regular gameplan isn't working. The problem is Freeman has been so bad at it that's it's hurt us in pretty much every game except the Zona and UNC wins (which, granted, were huge wins).

It'll be interesting to see what happens if we land that Louisville decommit since I think he's being recruited for the same role. If Gott (or Lowe) were still our coach I'd be worried that would be a chemistry nightmare, but maybe Keatts would make it work.

Yeah Abu is frustrating as hell. He’s regressed. I know he had an injury and is learning a new system but dude just ain’t good. Brings nothing to table really.

Freeman has to force things because we don’t have that many other options. It’s not ideal and he definitely does too much sometimes. Others have made the comparison but he’s just a worse Trevor Lacey. I agree with ^. In theory Freeman would be a good fit. He just doesn’t have the skillset to be the go to guy.

yeah definitely on the wrong side of the bubble. kinda needed to go 1-1 this past week. we aren't out of the conversation at all. just got some work to do, i think.

we got

@cuse
@wake
bc
fsu
@gt
louisville

seems like 4-2 would probably get us in. that's gonna be easier said than done, though.

need to win all road games and 2/3 at home, IMO. I feel like we're better than GT, BC, Wake and Syracuse.....but road games are the greatest equalizer. FSU and Louisville are prolly a little better than we are, but we get them at home...so who knows.

Syracuse somehow managed to make it to this point with a fairly high RPI(38)....so if we manage to knock them off on the road it gives us an extra quadrant 1 win. That could give us some breathing room.
