So you're predicting 5-13 in the ACC, at best?

last year was a train wreck. it went way beyond depth/talent and even coaching (which was poor). the guys were in open rebellion and gave up on the coach. then we fired said coach but inexplicably let him finish out the season?

next year we have a talented roster with a much better in-game better coach and system. we don't have a lotto pick PG that's going to score all of our points, but at the same time we may benefit from spreading the ball around more. we're a bit lacking on depth but I think we have a strong enough core to improve on last year and hopefully make the NCAAT on the bubble, or a decent run in the NIT.

What a surprise, burro being a whiney pessimist.

Hopefully no one is expecting too much this season with a new coaching staff, losing our three top scorers and having a lot of new guys on the court.

With the recruiting you see and all the transfers this coming year is just going to be a wash, all we should really expect is to be aggressive and competitive and to see some fight. See GT this past season for what our ceiling will be.

It's not about whether or not our ceiling is 5 ACC wins, it's about the change in talent isn't going to be drastic and we lost several players and our most talented player, so if you're thinking ".500 in the ACC" or something like "NCAA tournament bid" this year, that's just an unrealistic expectation.

I'd say expectations should be as low as last year's team ended up being but obviously I think we have a higher ceiling, I just don't think anything like a tournament bid or any major upsets should really be an expected result at this point. I'd expect a bottom 3-4 in the ACC finish and then anything above that is just a bonus.

It's a brand new system with inherited players that just came off a really bad ACC season where the team basically had a mutiny and were playing with a fired coach half the season. It's going to take a lot of work from Keatts and staff to get the system in place and try and get these guys ready to play in it and also rebuild the team chemistry and mentality.

The fact that it was reported every single player puked in our first team practice should show you that our guys were no where near where they needed to be for the new system. Some of the guys will fit in the system but a lot of others are going to have to work.

I mean we're going to be running a 4 out system and asking our best big man in Abu to play out some just because of our depth/talent, something he hasn't been great at in the past. We're severely lacking in 3pt shooting with Henderson's denial from the NCAA in a system that flourishes when you have great 3pt shooters.

I just don't see how anyone could have anything but low expectations from our team next year. Not to say I'm not stoked about Keatts, his additions so far, or the future of the team, I just think it would be unfair to have high expectations for this team and I think it's going to take Keatts a couple of years to iron things out. He's already thinking ahead with these transfers and knows that he just needs to show a little growth this year to start getting guys he wants into the program.

Hell the starting back-court of Johnson, Batts, Bryce, and Dorn is already looking great for 2018-2019 season.

"next year we have a talented roster "

this is somewhat debatable. i mean, based on recruiting rankings yes...Markell, Abu, Yurt7 were well thought of recruits and we'll rely heavily on them this year. but even then, Markell and Yurt7 are only sophomores with pretty limited experience and Yurt7 has a really long ways to go based on last year.

after that we've got a grad transfer from NCA&T, he's a massive question mark given the jump in competition level. Dorn was up and down as hell last year, and really struggled against stiffer competition. Al Freeman should be solid, but is new addition so he's a question mark. Lennard Freeman and his health and stamina will be major question marks...he was solid before, but definitely not great. Hicks and Kirk are total question marks and i don't think we should expect much at all out of Kirk. Batts is a true freshman so who knows.

point is, yeah there is some talent. but definitely less talent than last year and even some of the better talent comes with some serious question marks. we have several X factors on next year's team...guys like Markell, Yurt7, Dorn, Al Freeman....those guys could break out and be really good...but that's far from a given.

I agree with this. No reasonable state fan believes or expects us to make the NCAA this year. Would it be nice if we do? Hell yea, that means we had a pretty good year most likely. However my minimum expectation is to see five well coached guys give it their all and not continue making the same errors every play. It was dreadfully obvious how we would play last year and the team frankly was an embarrassment.

I want to see an improvement in our play and some semblance of a plan moving forward. I do believe this team has the talent and an NCAA tournament run is going to be dependent on if Keatts can make these guys play above their current level.

But on the plus side, we also lost the coach who lost the locker room.

Good thing he'll have had like 7 months to work on them before their first game.

In general I agree with your sentiment, except I don't think .500 in the ACC is unrealistic.

I imagine the chemistry of the team took a hit with the Gott dismissal, plus the guys knew the team wasn't going to do anything, it's just a chemistry/morale/mentality thing to fix. A winning mentality is an important piece, and I imagine Keatts is going to have to rebuild that outlook around here after our team being awful the last 2 years. Only eligible players this year that have played on a P5 team with a winning record are: Abu, Freeman, and Freeman.

Quote :
"

Well the coaches won't personally, but the strength and conditioning program will have plenty of time, but the kids still have to want to do it. I mean look at Nard Freeman, is he going to physically be able to keep up with that pace on his leg? Plus look at Anya, remember how he had to focus on conditioning so much that he didn't actually develop a game? How long it takes them to get into the proper shape is going to cut back on actually learning the system. Obviously they're athletes, but it takes time to learn a system well enough to play fast mentally as well as play at the physical pace Keatts wants.

Quote :
"

His jumper is ok but he's not shooting from outside and he's one of our better interior players, so having him play away from the basket and trying to dribble and drive is going to be interesting. I just don't trust him playing away from the basket or distributing.

Quote :
"Doesn't every system flourish with great 3pt shooters? "

True but this system more-or-less relies on good 3pt shooting given the 4 guards and spacing needed.

I mean obviously people can expect what they want. I just see our ceiling being .500 in the ACC next year and a more realistic number would be similar to the last 2 years.

no he couldnt work on his offensive game b/c he didnt have the work ethic to keep the weight off and stay in shape. maybe he had some kind of bad genetic thing that made it near impossible to keep the weight off, otherwise it seems clear he didnt work hard enough. He might have gotten more of a pass if there wasnt Meeks right off the road. Meeks got in shape AND improved his game. crazy.

nothing against the guy, he just had other priorities. he seems like a pretty generally happy person, so more power to him and i wish him well.

Thought it was established that Anya and Gott didn't gel as well as everyone wanted, especially this year when Anya was like screw it I'm gonna do whatever I want.

But given that, good to see we got the 2 new transfers, especially Bryce. Having him in practice already knowing KK system will benefit the others tremendously.

^^ we aren't really disagreeing. I made the same point about Meeks in relation to Anya during the season.

Gott spent two offseasons talking about his weight/getting in shape, which I'm sure Anya, who for whatever reason or reasons, got tired of quickly.

Anya was a yo-yo in weight loss. Every spring/summer Anya would lose a bunch of weight, then he'd pack on the weight during the season. He'd go from 320+ down to 270-280 and we'd all get excited and then he'd end the season back at 320+.

Once he stopped focusing on conditioning and started focusing on practicing, he started putting the weight back on. He was either losing weight or gaining weight, he didn't really have the right mindset to maintain his weight apparently.

Before his senior year he decided to go to a workout camp for big men and he worked on his game the entire summer instead of losing weight. That's why his senior season he was huge but you could actually see he learned a few moves. It was just a shame he couldn't maintain his weight for 4 years and just focus on becoming a better player.

BeeJay obviously has some serious weight issues, normal people couldn't lose or gain that much weight that quickly no matter how hard they tried. Hopefully he gets it under control, or he might have some serious issues after he stops playing ball.

Never understood how he could lose so much weight in the summer when there's no nutrionists riding his ass, no assistant coaches riding his ass, no practices, no workouts, and no games. Once all those things are there during the season he blows up? Made no sense, I would've expected the exact opposite.

i think there are plenty of workouts and training and nutritionists in the offseason. there may not be organized practices, but they are definitely working out. and i'm pretty sure they were riding his ass all offseason to lose weight.

And having a good backcourt doesn'tt necessarily mean we won't be lacking 3-point shooters.

Yeah Freeman's got the best numbers at 38-39%, but Hunt took a bunch (6.5/gm) last year at a decent clip too (35%) and Dorn is about the same at 36% but he didn't shoot nearly as many as either of them. Bryce was decent (33%) but maybe he'll bump that up with a year and a half of work. And Kells was pretty bad in very limited attempts, but sometimes people make jumps between freshman and sophomore year

Hey, who wants to put together a list of all players/positions on the team, and who will be sitting out, how many years of eligibility they have. I can't keep up with all the new guys we have yet.

(I know it's probably in the recruiting thread but don't feel like looking for it.)

(actually, think i found most of it on previous page. is this it, with the addition of Bryce and Daniels, both 2-guards who will be sitting out next year?)

I am hopeful that Markell becomes a reliable three point threat this year. He was decent at hitting open ones from the corner last year and in the last few weeks of the season he started hitting some pull up threes while guarded that I didn't know he had in his game.

So for the first time since I graduated, I may not be renewing my season tickets (it's a little too difficult to find a babysitter for every home game and the friends I used to get season tickets with before my wife started going have either moved away or are not available).

How many of the non-ACC games are on TV? Looking at the schedule on gopack from last year, it looks like everything had some type of TV listing, but what is ACC Network Extra?

nm - ncsuftw1 broke it down for me last year

Quote :
"CBS = CBS/WNCN
RSN = Fox Sports
ACC Network = Raycom (Usually WRAL/WRAZ or one of their sub-channels if it's not a triangle team)
ACC Network Extra = ESPN3"
