this was not a tournament team. we werent expected to be one at the start of the season. imo Keatts did a fine job getting us to 22 wins given the obvious limitations the roster had. Beverly should be getting bench minutes, we had at best 2 guys that could get buckets. this season made me believe that if we get some talent, Keatts will take us far

^^that's bs though, ohio state, Ole miss and Oklahoma were 4-10 vs quad 1.

^it's also Keatts' job to get better players

I think the expectation was definitely to be a fringe tourney team. Plenty of roster turnover, but let’s not act like the NCAAs weren’t a very realistic goal for this year.

Yeah ^ his logic was 100% BS. But it’s what he said. Sounds like if we had beaten UL or FSU or UVA in OT we’d be in.

That is a garbage reason. Where is this lack of quality wins for teams like Iowa and Washington?

And hell, at least we broke even in conference, Ohio State lost 12 games!!!

I agree that with talent Keatts will be good. But I am worried about the talent. Next year we lose a versatile player in Dorn and are supposed to get a driving guard. Any other big changes for next year? Guess we could get a grad transfer.

we probably sneak in without the 353 NCSOS. that was the eye sore that made them scrutinize us. when you get the scrutiny on you thats when "oh, they beat no one" comes into play. if you snag a duke or uva win you can escape it, but why leave that up to chance?

schedule better, and schedule q1 opportunities ooc just in case the stars align and you have three fucking #1 seeds in your conference

^im not worried a ton about losing Dorn. He’s good, but not irreplaceable

^^ yeah that Q1 wins thing seems like BS. Losing 5 games to 3 of the 4 best teams in the nation shouldn’t count against you. And obviously not all Q1 wins are equal. PSU was a Q1 win for us...but that’s a much easier opponent than @Duke or @UNC.

Yeah I'm sure these kids won't want to/exert effort to win. Hot take there.

^ very few players are irreplaceable and they don't come here, but he is our leading scorer and easily our leading rebounder.

Dorn is replaceable - that doenst mean he will be, if Hellems is playing starter minutes next year thats a downgrade

Markell isnt. If we lose him we're back to the drawing board

So lets say Lecque goes NBA

Who is KK best recruit in his tenure?

so list of his recruits:

- batts
- beverly
- bryce
- hunt
- daniels
- funderburk
- hellems
- bates
- steere
- walker
- harris
- lecque
- seabron

I guess I would have to say bryce, funderburk, beverly, daniels in that order, but I don't think there is a huge separation between them.

Would you say that's elite ACC level recruiting?

it takes time to recruit, his next 2 classes will be telling. Our class this year was looking great until bates got hurt, steere left early, and bey went to villanova. Not many scholarships to work with for next year, but lecque was huge and seabron looks solid. Funderburk and daniels still haven't reached their ceilings.

Don't compare yourself to Duke or Carolina, only a couple schools in the country can compare to their recruiting classes.

You dont think NC State should compete with UNC and Duke level recruiting classes?

Duke recruited 3 top-10 picks, last year alone. UNC just landed the #2 player in the country this week. No, any sane person realizes that we are not on their level recruiting while K and Roy are there. Even when Gott or Lowe got some highly touted recruits, we were not on the same recruiting level as two of the top national programs.

Expecting us to recruit on par with Coach K is ridiculous

Duke's recruiting class has been ranked #1 or #2 ever year since 2014 by 247.

so no, i don't think it's realistic for State to be recruiting on that level.

On what basis do you think we should be competing with UNC and Duke at this point in basketball recruiting? Seriously?

Roy - HOF coach. 3 national titles. Last 5 years: Sweet 16 , NCAA Finals, National Champs, NCAA 2nd round, Sweet 16
K - HOF coach. 5 national titles. Last 5 years: National Champs, Sweet 16, NCAA 2nd Round, Elite 8, Elite 8

Keatts - Entering 3rd year at NC State. 0 HC National Titles.
NC State the last 5 years: Sweet 16, no postseason, no postseason, NCAA First Round, NIT

You want us landing top 10 classes? Seriously?

I’m not really worried about recruiting at this point.

We’ve always gotten decent talent here, no matter the coach. Sure, we don’t bring on top 10 classes but why would we think that’s realistic?

Building a team with players that fit a system, building a solid foundation, and maintaining some degree of roster continuity have been big issues in the past...especially for Gott.

There's no reason State shouldn't be neck and neck with UNC and Duke, but to get back to that point will take time, luck, and probably both of those schools suffering some sort of dropoff after Roy and K retire. It won't happen overnight and hopefully KK is the one to get us there. Everything is in place for hoops to be a great program except results. Making a Sweet 16 every five years or so on average isn't going to attract elite talent on a consistent basis.

I disagree. That was true at one time, obviously. But unc and duke have created gigantic separation from us over that last ~30 years. UNC and Duke have every single advantage over State in basketball and there’s no real reason to think we will match them in short amount of time. Can we close the gap some? Definitely.

I’m no saying we should shut the program down. But it is gonna take a loooong time before we can realistically expect to be on the same level as Duke and UNC

The only issue I have with recruiting is recruiting average players from low or mid majors. That just makes no sense or less desperate. The only solid transfer that Keatts got is DJ. The other guys have been so-so.

CJ Bryce has been pretty good. And more proven than, say, a low 4* recruit.

who knows what this means, and I'll give the benefit of the doubt to Keatts for now. But I have a bad feeling about his name being mentioned.

I enjoy NC State basketball and was a season ticket holder for 13 years (taking a temporary pause for young kids). I cheer for our team even during our difficult seasons, and I am the type of fan that tries to find the silver lining in every nc state cloud. But if a second coach in a row gets caught up in the cheating scandal, and the overall landscape of rampant cheating in college basketball and lack of penalties, then fuck all this.

What is the timing of this? Seems like it was before Keatts was here if Pitino is on that list.

Dawkins literally laid out a list of guys he WANTED TO CONTACT and Keatts was on the list. There was no evidence/proof he ever got in touch with Keatts or that Keatts was interested.

Keatts is still in the clear, thoughh I'm sure UNC fans on reddit and twitter are calling for the death penalty.

Not sure who Keatts would have bought while he was here or at UNCW anyway.

Scholarship reductions would hurt, but a postseason ban would set us back several years. Right now we're looking fairly good to improve our position in the ACC during the power vacuum that will be left after Roy/K/Boeheim retire. I'd have to imagine the three of them will be gone in less than 5 years, if not sooner.

the testimony today about what Christian Dawkins said in the video wiretap is worse for UNC and Duke than the text message is to State, and none of it is that big by itself
