Gottfried probably has a John Wooden tattoo for as much as he talks about him. Maybe he can run his UCLA high post at UCLA. I can't imagine they'd actually hire him though.

lol at this article on him going to Cal

http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2017/3/23/15042376/north-carolina-state-wolfpack-mark-gottfried-california-golden-bears-coaching-search

the comments are all like fuck no. funny how the national media made him to be a martyr

7 years ~4mil a year for Archie. Basically getting Keatts for half that so it's not surprising.

Nice contract for Archie. I'm always glad to see State alums succeed. Hope Archie does a hell of a job there. Fuck Sean though.

Good for Archie. Worked out best this way. But yea, if he isn't a home run at IU, he'll end up in the retread conversation in 5 years. Too much pressure on coaches to win quick these days. Glad we got Keatts in the end.

^Exactly. And it happens all the time that various jobs of varying value are open at the same time. Not NC State shit.

Yeah, but it doesn't happen all the time that NC State needs a new coach at the same time the two dream jobs for a talented young alum are possibly open (and one actually happens.)

It sucks, but I'm still happy with our hire.

Heard Dick Vitale this morning say that Alford was never even offered the job at Indiana. Figured Archie was the backup plan but maybe he was their guy all along.

Nope. Not even close. Unfortunately for his sake, he is gonna get WAY worse. Crean won 2 B1G championships (one of them last fuckin year!). The next coach to win an ACC championship here gets a statue.

Indiana fans hated Crean because he didn't recruit enough players from Indiana. That's so dumb.

There was a tweet over the weekend quoting Archie's Dad, basically saying that Archie was never coming to State because he knows first hand that he would be battling with the administration. My question is, when did we ever have an unsupportive administration, much less during Archie's playing days here? Or was this just the national narrative of State fans having an itchy trigger finger?

i think the quote was like "you need to be able to trust the people above you". which i guess could be interpreted as concern over Yow's looming retirement and her replacement. or her reputation (deserved or not, she has one). or maybe with how the fans felt toward Herb - which had little to do with the administration. Fowler always supported Herb even when the fans hated Herb. and as far as Yow's reputation, i've yet to read anything specific about why folks don't like her (and isn't really only Gary Williams?) now, i don't care that Archie didn't come. he took a higher paying, higher profile job. good for him. but that reasoning isn't totally fair and doesn't make a ton of sense.

^I felt like the tone of that article definitely suggested that Archie didn't trust Yow in the sense that she wouldn't protect him if he didn't produce fairly substantial results pretty quickly. Some of that has to do with Yow, some to do with her replacement being unknown, and a lot to do with how volatile our fan base can be.

Gott took out the back page of the Technician.

The Pack Pride publisher made a good point last night about that article. Archie's dad lobbied for Archie to get the job in 2011, with Yow as the AD.

So I guess he had no issues with her back then. Now she's apparently a cunt. I'm not buying his bullshit.

Yeah, that quote was total spin room BS. Indiana likely had the deal before they fired Crean and before Dayton was out of the tourney ... and this is their way of managing the dialogue. Archie probably reached out to Indiana to see if there was any option there, and ohio state as well, before turning down the NCSU job. Otherwise, my money is that he would have come here.

The media makes it look like a shitty job, but I mean, really ... Indiana is more harsh on their coaches than we are ... and while more historical, its not his alma mater. Had Indiana/tOSU not been in play, I think we would have ended up on top here. Archie was not afraid of losing and getting fired at NCSU. He was just playing a better hand than we gave him credit for.

We had our coach named before Dayton Lost, so we had a response from Archie before Dayton lost. If you don't believe that, you're in denial.

Dickie V said UCLA coach was never offered the job. If that's the case (wink wink) then it supports the idea that Archie was vetted/decided before the firing and the job was not actually open for applications. Process usually takes a few weeks anyhow.

Archie is obviously not scared of going to a good program with a bad current situation and one who fires successful coaches. So, I don't believe, with his level of confidence in his abilities and being an alum, he would shy away from the job if it was offered to him.

He just had a better option on the table. You don't need a ton of evidence to line up the most likely timeline here. No, I don't have inside info. Just a brain in between my ears.

Perhaps when Bobby Knight recently shit on Indiana, Indiana figured they were done with him as well, rather than bringing one of his former players (UCLA coach Steve Alford) back to Bloomington

or he just didn't wanna coach here. being an alum might not mean as much to him as it does fans. that's totally fine. Wade played Clemson for more money from LSU and that's his alma mater. that shit might just not matter to certain people.

I think that a bunch of state fans refuse to admit how tough this job is, because you would have to understand that UNC and Duke are better programs in order to see how much of a fucking disaster this coaching job actually would be for an up and comer.

ehh...i think every state fan realizes that UNC and Duke are better programs right now. you'll definitely have people argue about "tradition" and all that...which we do have, but no State fans think it's on par with UNC and Duke. they/we do tend to value that ancient history much more than the rest of college basketball value it. but the problem isn't that State fans think we're equals with UNC and Duke. a lot of the fans just don't realize that this job doesn't have the appeal that some fans want it to have. some fans were upset we couldn't do better than an up and coming coach from UNCW (who was pretty highly thought of and generally viewed as a strong, solid hire by the nat'l media). they think we should be able to poach a P5 coach or have our pick of the lot of all mid-major coaches. that just isn't a realistic view.

i think the proximity to Duke and UNC is sometimes overblown. yes, it's a factor. but it's overblown. that's like 4 games/year out of 30+. every ACC team has to play Duke and UNC. sure, being so close to them and being rivals with them makes fans compare the programs more. but Herb, Lowe, and Gott didn't get fired/leave because they didn't win national titles or because we didn't become equals with UNC and Duke. their tenures here came to an end for other reasons. sure, UNC and Duke's success has served to further highlight our bad seasons and lack of success. but UNC and Duke's success had nothing to do with Gott getting fired or Herb deciding to leave for ASU. think about it - Gott gets fired this year regardless of what UNC or Duke accomplish over the last 5 years. Herb had worn out his welcome, sure...in part because he couldn't beat UNC and Duke. but that was far from being the only reason fans were tired of him. of course we, the fans, want to win titles and bring home championships like UNC and Duke. but let's not pretend that's the expectation for every new coach we've hired. most fans are reasonable enough to have expectations that don't extend that far. yeah...we wanna win an ACC title eventually. that's not terribly unreasonable considering how many other teams have done that since we last did. and we wanna make the NCAAT every year or close to it...and we'd like to not be a bubble team every year that do we make it. but those expectations, while higher than some places, are hardly unreasonable IMO.

this job isn't terrible for young coaches because of UNC and Duke. that doesn't even make sense. hell, you win an ACC title here and we'll build you a statue. this job, like a lot of middle of the road P5 jobs, can be a dead end job. if you fizzle out here you'll have to take a step back to the mid-major ranks most likely (or move on as a re-tread to an equal or lower P5 program). or you do just enough to keep your job without really garnering interest from the blue blood programs when they have vacancies. but that's the case for the majority of P5 jobs. you win big and you'll make a name for yourself. you fizzle out and you probably won't get many opportunities elsewhere as a P5 coach. that's why you see guys like Shaka Smart or Archie Miller hold out for a big name job instead of taking the first P5 opening the comes calling. every mid-major coach making the move from mid major to P5 is taking a risk...they are in a comfortable position that they generally don't have to worry about their job security (if they're good enough for P5s to want them, they aren't on the hot seat) for the next few years...they can just keep doing what they're doing with far less pressure at their current mid major job.

in short...i agree with you that State fans tend to overvalue this job. but i disagree with the extent and the reasoning.

Health concerns are the reason. They thought he would be able to coach and recruit like he used to but over the summer seems the health issues flared back up and they want to move on. Believe he will still be in basketball but not actively coaching at tOSU.

Chris Mack and Holtman likely top candidates.
