So many companies are claiming the service life of their oil 10-20k. I use big rig oil that's claimed to have 20-50k service life depending on quantity used. However, I don't see any FILTER companies claiming similar. Are there any confirmed extended life oil filters that you guys use? 4/8/2017 10:26:21 AM |

so you guys just use the same $10 paper filters for 20k or you change them every 5k? 7/13/2017 12:57:07 AM |

The hell? "Big Rig" oil?
Most oil is still good after 10,000 miles. However it's the contaminants contained within the oil at that point which becomes the problem.
I use Purelator filters for the Integra and Mahle/OEM ones for the Porsche.
Send off an oil sample to Blackstone to see what interval you should use. 7/13/2017 8:40:37 AM |

I just change the oil and filter when the dashboard tells me to. Ends up being about twice a year. 7/13/2017 9:10:47 AM |

I use Mobil 1, with NAPA Gold filters. I change at recommended intervals, or when cued by the maintenance minder (even if those intervals are for conventional or semi-synth oil). I also change the filter every time, even if only specified to change other other time.
In my Honda, that amounts to about every 10-11k miles. With the Z06, it varied a lot based on if I was doing track days or just routine driving.
With the 7, I just change it every couple of years. It sees very, very few miles. With my old beater Ram, that was the only other exception...I used conventional oil, and changed it and the filter every 5k. 7/13/2017 11:06:05 PM |

Hardest use is in my 240 which probably gets around 7000 miles/year. I use Liqui Moly race tech something or other and a Wix filter
Most mileage is my minivan which is probably 12,000-14,000 miles/year. I use Liqui Moly high-mileage with a Wix filter.
I don't touch the filters until I change the oil. The van's oil comes out nice and clean. The 240 comes out solid black and always has even when newly built

do you drive enough for this to even matter? I'm around 20k miles/year, so 4-5 oil changes... not a lot of money to ensure you don't wreck an engine. 7/14/2017 4:23:37 PM |

seems like reading comprehension is hard here. i wasn't asking about personal habits, we've got threads for that. i was asking if there are extended life filters to keep up with extended life synthetics.
anyway, i use liqui-moly 10w-60 in the m3 and rotella T or T6 in everything else, race bikes, f250 psd, cayenne, RV, etc
ie: mobil1 has one https://mobiloil.com/en/oil-filters/performance-oil-filters but it's a limited application and i have no idea if the filter is any different or if it's mobil trying to double dip on the detergent package in their oil. it looks like mobil, amsoil, and royal purple filters are made by champion labs and champion is owned by the same company that owns fram. i've never trusted a fram filter, so seeing if anyone has personally used and inspected one of these "extended" filters to see if they're legit or snake oil

Hmm.. Champion may be owned Fram, but that doesn't mean that Amsoil and Mobil are on the same quality level as Fram filters. At least, that's what I hope. I admit ignorance here
I use Wix or Mahle filters on things I care about. Other vehicles get Purolator Pure One (or classic if Pure One isn't available).
To your point smoothcrim, I think Fleetgaurd has some high end filters that may meet what you are asking. I believe I've heard claims that Wix and Mahle may also qualify. 7/17/2017 7:33:13 AM |

for supply chain efficiency, it just doesn't make sense to make multiple qualities/quantities of filter elements when you've got that kind of volume. if they were just a holding company of a bunch of small filter plants I could see differentiating the lineup, but they're all about consolidation and volume here. why else make the acquisition otherwise?

according to my research, 2013+ civics and accords call for 18k change intervals on the oem filter. looks like the OEM is filtech. does anyone know of an OTC brand that uses the same media? it looks like some bosch filters do, under their distanceplus line, but of course, nothing available for my applications.

I would never run oil at those intervals......My ex-daily driver has a 9qt pan and never saw more than 6k on oil.
Your best bet is to just swap filters every 5k or so if you really want to put 20k on the oil. 7/19/2017 3:42:28 PM |
