in many places, car free cities are still decases away but these can do the trick for high profie soft targets

they should be at every major pedestrian areaby now and a a cheap, non intrusive solution

Had the police not stood down, there would have been barricades in Cville.

They knew that protest was going to happen for a long time. There was a federal hearing to allow the thing. According to the event organizer, police were to setup barricades at 11:30 but didn't show. When they did show an hour later, they shut down the event. Afterward BLM took to the streets. In fact, there was so little police presence that it took about 5 min for them to arrive on scene after the car came. That sounds very suspicious.

In this vid, the car plows in at around 2:30. First cops show around 6:00.

cities are already putting up bollards (although usually less expensive kinds than what is shown here), and state and federal property started adding vehicle protection after 9/11

in raleigh we use planters on fayetteville st and park city vehicles at the ends of the mall for large gatherings

bollards would not have helped in charlottesville, that attack was on a public street and not a pedestrian area

you may have meant that as a joke but banning cars is actually a great idea and preventing attacks is low on the long list of reasons why

^ I think bollets (or bullards?) would be better as they can be used to stop car attacks as well as fire with a gun

basic folding bollards are way less expensive, removable bollards that fit into sockets are a bit less expensive

I know this is a joke thread, but you can contact your local state reps: Justin Burr and Chris Millis who are trying to pass unnecessary legislation that encourages this type of attack:

^^ Every solution has a wild trolley-problem excuse

they have the barriers at time square but needed them on the bike path. If I was in charge, I would have made sure these were in place all over the city back in August when I made this thread. This attack was preventable.

It's a mixture. Some barricades, particularly around 1WTC and Wall street are definitely city maintained. This particular greenway is a popular bike path that runs parallel to West Street/West Side Highway and in general is pretty well protected. I'm generally aware that when I'm getting ready to cross the street I'm always mindful to stand behind the bollards or stanchions or whatever is there. That being said the ones in my example above are probably private.

I've been obsessed with ethical dilemmas and thought experiments since psychology at state. It probably has a lot to do with why I am such a free thinker who doesn't follow a herd.

Recently, I've come across trolley problem memes and it made me think about how the trolley problem could be used as a tool in today's polarized political climate. The problem is that most people on both sides can't understand the other side and breaking it down to a trolley problem can help people see the other side. Its funny he brings it up, because people like dtownral immediately come to mind when I think about people who can't fathom the other side. I'm an educator so anytime I see a tool that can help people understand things, I adopt it.

Anytime you bring up solutions to problems, people immediately dismiss them because of the one, rare circumstance that will inevitably cause the solution to make the problem worse.

Trumpism (in the minds of trump voters)
Ending the war on drugs
Legalizing drugs
Security measures
Ending wars
Housing first programs for the homeless
Social welfare in general
Taking guns from the population
Taking guns from beat cops
Abortion
Early sex ed
Rehabilitation instead of punishment

These are all amazing solutions that would save/enhance so many lives but people immediately dismiss them because of the anticipated inevitable sacrifice involved.

i dont think memes existed when i learned it in 06.

memes do open my eyes to the way a lot of people think though. the notion that you cant learn anything from a meme is exactly what i would expect from a closed minded individual. take this meme as an example

this meme taught me that we've been taking the wrong approach in vaccine debate and havent done a good enough job teaching the other side about people who cant be vaccinated and how those people depend on herd immunity.

Wonder if Earl is aware kids whose parents choose not to vaccinate their children can and do come into contact with those who are not the appropriate age for all vaccines.

Also, relevant to this thread, I just saw Gillibrand just introduced some legislation about barriers that will surely not pass..
