Nope, you're completely right. The strength of our defense is our secondary l, thankfully you can give huxtable a call and we can start on the ultra effective bend but don't break defensive game plan. Use your fucking brain mang.

it doesn't matter how you play if our dline can't win any individual matchups. they had all day to throw all game and when we got pressure, we couldn't get home and the qb got away both times.

Preseason hype, shut the bed on opening game, terrible kicker. Same story, different year, rinse and repeat.

lol I guess it's a morale victory that you people call losing by 7 with an incomplete job as time runs out to tie a "shutting of the bed". It would seem we've come a long way.

Back in my day... We called losing to Akron shutting the bed.

Having Finley throw 50+ passes is a pretty solid recipe for a loss.

i think it was because we were down the whole game. giving up an opening kickoff and 28 more points is the recipe for the loss.

^This. The way to win this game would have been to dominate the running game and keep our offense on the field for long sustained drives. Would have kept our vastly overrated defense off the field and work their defense down. Their defense was gassed towards the end and that was without us even running the ball worth a damn.

We knew going into the game that our secondary would be a problem with Stevens out and inexperienced guys out there. The d line looked okay for the most part aside from missed tackles. They just have a stud WR and a QB who knew he could feed him easily.

I think the defense will round out, especially when stevens comes back. I'm most impressed with the offense which was supposed to be the weakest link but actually looked formidable. I think Finley took a big step forward and Drink didn't forget that JaySam is our go to guy in big conversion situations

Call me an optimist, but this isn't shutting the bed like in the past. We don't have preseason and most of our errors could come from facing an opponent other than ourselves in practice.

The sky isn't falling for me. If we lay an egg next week, then I'll be in panic mode

The only reason Finley didn't have three picks was because usc doesn't have a DB corps much better than ours.

He's going to get embarrassed in the conference games.

We couldn't run the ball because two starters were out. 89 yards on 35 carries for 2.5 yard average isn't gonna get it done. That's a cause for concern.

Finley isn't good enough to attempt 64 passes. Those are air raid type numbers. Being behind elevated it a bit but I think it's a sign we couldn't run on them more so then us playing catch-up.

I didn't watch the game and hope someone throws it on YouTube this week... But looking at the stats and reading the box score, I think we'd still beat them 6 of 10 times. Outgaining by 250 yards is no joke. Still think going 3-1 out of conference is easily obtainable.

Muschamp won 11 games his second year at Florida... Maybe something similar happens again?

Maybe I'll be super pessimistic after watching the game, but I expected us to lose either this or the ND game so we're still on track for 7-5 or 8-4.

[Edited on September 2, 2017 at 11:55 PM. Reason : Yay 8-4 as best case scenario for this season]

Only one OL starter missed the start, Prescod was hurt during the game

Is Freddie Phillips done for the year with achilles?

I new this would probably happen. We aren't a national power like Alabama, or FSU. We're a part of that 99% of teams that finish with about 5 to 9 wins on average.

Well at least with the hype being immediately shut down the team can actually focus on playing football.

A few thoughts on the game (might be what others have said but I haven't read the thread):

I was surprised by the early blitzing considering the supposed strength of the defensive line and the weakness of the secondary. I don't remember which touchdown it was, but I distinctly remember an all out blitz inside the 10 with one-on-one coverage and the DB was promptly beaten. Seemed odd to me that the line wasn't given a quarter or two to impose their will and help the secondary by keeping as many men back as possible.

The game was obviously lost in the 3rd quarter and that's on the coaching staff. I was shocked that the coaches couldn't seem to make adjustments to counteract the line stunts SC was using coming out of the half. After that first possession of the 3rd quarter where Finley was sacked twice I thought for sure there would be some adjustments to protection, but didn't appear to be and Finley was sacked again and fumbled.

The same bugaboo year after year - mental mistakes. The penalties, fumbles, dropped passes, and missed assignments. Hard to understand how this still happens with such an experienced team. There were a few blown calls by the refs but this game shouldve been won.

As others have mentioned, the offensive balance was lost early in the game. Im not of the belief that you should force runs just to maintain balance but I think we can all agree that Finley should not throw the ball 60 times.

Overall, still a solid game by both sides of the ball and nothing to be embarrassed about. Some of the SC plays were just fantastic and wouldn't have happened consistently. I think the season could still be a good one especially with the loss of FSU QB and Louisville looking pedestrian against Perdue.

I, too, hate games where we put 500 yards of total offense and double up the other team 500-250. Our offense sucked.

The more I look back the more obvious it becomes that we lost the game because of:

-our top corner was out and their top wr killed us
-special teams gave up 2 huge returns
-we only got 2 hurries on the qb the whole game and we know how they turned out. with our dline hype, we should be getting 2 hurries per drive.

Earl already got his excuses ready. Last year we would have won the ACC if our #5/6 WRs were not hurt.

Now Mike Stevens (Revis 2.0) and Freddie Phillips.

^^to be fair, last year the excuse was "if we had a kicker we woulda..." and that was a pretty legit excuse but did ignore the fact that we shit the bed vs BC.
