not winning your conference has been treated as an extra loss. with that logic, bama has a chance to end with a resume that is similar to clemsons current resume which should put them ahead of the pac12 champ and really close to a big10 champion ohio state. there are too many variables to try and predict what could happen.

i think that has to come with the caveat of "undefeated or 1 loss P5 conference champ" because things could get funky real quick if you've got a couple 2 loss conference champs.

Fun fact: a 2 loss SEC champion Auburn would have arguably the best resume of any team and would be ranked ahead of an undefeated Wisconsin if they played anyone other than Ohio State in the B1G championship.

I realize this is all silly conjecture, but this Wisconsin team has a historically bad schedule and there are very real and very possible scenarios where they miss the playoffs because of it.

yeah auburn, if they run the table, is a slam dunk to make the CFP...no other 2 loss team controls their destiny like that.

^^Undefeated Wisconsin will be in. Just like with last season, Ohio State got in over Penn State because Penn State lost 2 games. At some point the wins and losses have to count for something, otherwise FSU has to be declared this years national champion since they have played multiple ranked teams. You can only use the strength of schedule argument to a certain degree.

nobody's saying undefeated wiscy isn't getting in. again - undefeated P5 champ will never not get in. he's just talking about where they'd be ranked

I still think there is a very, very slim chance an undefeated UW doesn't get in. Granted this scenario involves OSU losing out and Michigan State winning the B1G East. That would give Wisconsin 0 marquee wins. At that point there is a valid argument to be made that the ACC loser (or possibly SEC) has a better resume than Wisconsin.

while Mich St might not count as a "marquee" win, they're #17 in the latest cfp rankings and if they win out and make the B1G title game they could be as high as 12-ish in the playoff rankings for the hypothetical game vs Wisc. i think the CFP committee would view that as an impressive win. plus - they don't want the fallout of leaving out an undefeated conference champ because that's part of what they wanted to avoid by having this committee.

another thing i think Wisc has going for them is that while it's been a weak schedule they have blown out a lot of the opponents. so they aren't sneaking by average and bad teams. for the most part they're winning those games handily.

Ehhh, if Miami beats clemson they’ll still probably make the playoff

Don’t think Miami is a top 4 team. But they probably won’t leave out a 1 loss conference champion unless some real weird stuff happens

^^yep, all this does is eliminate any chance of getting 2 ACC teams in the CFP. One is essentially guaranteed a spot now. So the ACC and SEC have pretty much locked up spots in the top 4. The other two spots are more up for grabs. Obviously Oklahoma and Wisconsin are in as long as they win out. But things could get weird if one of them loses.

Clemson loses to SC then beats Miami. Auburn beats Alabama and Georgia. Ohio state beats Wisconsin. TCU beats Oklahoma. Now who gets in?

Others...I’d guess clemson, Ohio State, and Alabama.

Honestly if you're going the disaster route, I think they could sneak in.

In that scenario I do think they at least deserve consideration. But ranked 15, there’s no way they’d make the jump into the discussion even if all hell broke loose this week

It would take some crazy shenanigoats for them to get in. (2 loss ACC champion, 2 loss Georgia as SEC champion + Alabama getting blown out, Oklahoma imploding, Wisconsin losing this week but beating OSU, etc)

But they deserve to be in the discussion if some funny shit goes down. I'd rather have them than a 1-2 loss big ten team with a joke schedule.

Been getting a kick out of reading the comments on the fan run ECU Pirate Football FB page all season. Really like this poll they posted:

https://www.facebook.com/ECUPirateFootball/photos/a.10151623524722343.1073741836.30670182342/10154927958502343/?type=3&theater

Even better, the top comment on that:

Quote :
"Karen Saffron no..simple reason..BOT paid big, old tobacco road money to get rid of ECU football, in order to elevate UNC..dollar to a donut, and it worked. They have someone else in mind to take ECU's place as the face of football in NC, bet its Charlotte..will be a UNC school with their name, not an affiliate. NC politics."

Bwahaha so the UNC system has conspired to make ECU football shitty to make UNC the face of football in North Carolina! They need more tinfoil in G-Vegas for their hats!

Tennessee were all set to announce Greg Schiano as their new coach, and then:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/21579125/tennessee-volunteers-no-longer-hire-greg-schiano-head-coach

Considering how easy I feel like the football people and their fanbase at Penn State have gone to how they even view the scandal like the football coaches did nothing wrong, it's nice to see consequences for someone tied to it, even if Schiano was not the main guy with responsibility.

not nearly enough evidence for that to be a case

Clay Travis went Clay Travis and organized an online mob that took him down for all of the wrong reasons, which is bad enough since they could’ve been pissed off based solely on his coaching resume’.

miami definitely will be in if they beat clemson. ohio state maybe not.

would clemson, currently at #1, have a shot at staying in the top 4 with a loss to miami? seems unlikely imo, but dropping them 4+ spots after losing to the #7 team would seem kinda harsh.

I haven't watched a snap of Bama football this year, but am I right in thinking they still have a great shot of getting in (because they're ALABAMA):

1. Clemson vs Miami winner gets a spot
2. Auburn vs Georgia winner gets a spot
3. If Wisconsin wins, they get the final spot. If Ohio State wins and Oklahoma wins, Ohio State or Alabama gets in.
4. If Oklahoma wins, they get the final spot. If TCU wins and Wisconsin wins, Alabama gets in.

definitely not far fetched for bama to still get in. depends on how the committee views a potential "quality loss" by clemson or a quality win by ohio state. alabama's resume is complete at this point...and while they're a very very good, their resume isn't really impressive. 2 loss clemson would have arguably a better resume than alabama with it's wins over 3 currently ranked teams (Auburn, NC State, VT). alabama's only win over a currently ranked team is Mississippi St.

I also hear LSU is ranked FYI

Putting Alabama at 5 and Ohio State at 8 this week is the telling sign that if Ohio State wins Alabama is getting in.

^yeah i overlooked lsu, you're right. and even though they're ranked that loss to troy looks/sounds bad although i'm not sure the committee is looking too much at lsu's losses to determine bama's worthiness. i don't really think 2 loss clemson would make it, but in theory...they shouldn't drop from #1 to #5 with a close loss to #7 miami imo (especially when that win would move miami into top 4). but i know that's not really how the committee is gonna work

[Edited on November 29, 2017 at 11:53 AM. Reason : clemson's win over auburn is far more impressive than any win bama has]

The committee said that teams 5-8 were extremely close to each other. An Ohio State win would probably put them over an idle Alabama team. The interesting thing is if Clemson loses, do they get in over Alabama? That's a much more intriguing scenario to me.

IMO the winner of the ACC, SEC and B1G will be in regardless of which team it is. I think barring any weird upsets that the B1G champion will be the #4 seed.

But the committee put Ohio State at 8 for two reasons. First, because they have an extremely easy schedule and second because they have the absolute worst loss of any team in contention. They got absolutely blown out by Iowa in a game that was over by halftime. That matters.

^i pretty much agree, especially about the 2 loss clemson scenario. ohio state can make their resume look a lot better with a win over wisconsin...bama can't improve their resume. and a win over a (currently) top 4 team would be better than any win bama has.

Yeah, Alabama's only hope really is for TCU to knock off Oklahoma. Or possibly some magical NCAA infractions to come to light this week for multiple contending teams.

not to mention ohio state's got other quality wins...a win over penn state (#9 right now) and a throttling of #16 michigan state. that's already better than any wins bama has. bama is great and if they were to make the playoff, i wouldn't be surprised if they won it. but they just don't really have the resume at this point imo. so the committee may do the "eye test" and say they just think bama is a better team than ohio state based on watching them play. or they could argue that ohio state's 2 losses are worse than bama's 1 loss. which isn't really an incorrect argument (2 losses is worse than 1, and 1 of OSU's losses is unranked Iowa). but does the committee weight quality wins over quality losses?
