^^I disagree. It's a sad one. It's a discouraging one. But it's a good running log of 5 years of futility. It's pretty easy to forget how often this happens. I mean, we know it happens a lot, but this is date and time stamped.

I would like to see a President use a national address like this to name names of key blockers in Congress, and to read off campaign contributions from pro-gun lobbies. I think it would be completely appropriate. What do you have to lose? Voters don't pay enough attention. At least it will force some conversation, even and especially if they rail against what an inappropriate forum it is.

Man, wouldn’t that be wild to watch Biden read off a list of names for a couple hours

A little doxing wouldn’t hurt my feelings either

I wouldn't suggest he do it for hours. You could hit the big names and stir up plenty of furor in 5 minutes or less.

just thank god the kids at that school weren’t required to wear masks, if they had been, this might have been traumatizing for them.

Then after he read some of the highlights, the White House could release a full list. Maybe also a summary of the voting records of members of Congress on gun reform efforts over the years.

Thom is on the case!

Republican senator warns against curbing gun rights in wake of Texas school shooting

Quote :
"GOP Sen. Thom Tillis warned Democrats against having a “reflexive reaction” in the wake of the Texas school shooting that left 15 people dead, by trying to pass laws that would impinge on Second Amendment rights, saying he is confident in the coming days it will be learned that there were “signs” the 18-year-old shooter was “at risk.”

“It's horrible. And you know what we need to avoid is the reflexive reaction we have to say this could all be solved by not having guns in anyone's hands. We can always talk about reasonable measures, but we also have to talk about better situational awareness. I'm almost certain that in the coming days or weeks, we're going to find out that there were signs that this person was at risk, and we need to have an equal or greater attention on prevention and that's a key part of it,” the North Carolina Republican told CNN.

Asked if there was a component of guns that could be part of the solution for the problem of mass shootings in the country, Tillis said “no.”

“What people immediately want to jump to are red flag laws. Virtually everyone that I've seen here has been one that sweep up law abiding gun owners into what I consider to be an overreach. So the question is can we can we actually get to policy that could make a difference, but not deny people their Second Amendment rights and give them due process? That's what we talk about every time something like this comes up and that hopefully will be the discussion if we have one versus what could potentially be the plot of people going into their political corners, which I've seen every time something tragic event like this has happened and the seven and a half years I've been here.”"

This shit infuriates me so much. Nothing I can add that hadn’t been echoed dozens of times in this 19 page thread. Our leaders and politicians are weak. From both sides. Their continued inaction only reinforces the message that these mass shootings are normal (well fuck, I guess they are normal at this point) and unavoidable. Fuck them all.

What I like is that the specter of gun restrictions (which of course as has been repeatedly proven will not happen) drives additional fear-based gun sales.

Exactly. It’s all fear based. Hype up crime and dangerous illegal immigrants so people will arm themselves. Claim the Dems are gonna come to your house and force you to hand over all your guns and ammo (which given their track record on gun control is absolutely hilariously that anybody continues to fall for that)…again, driving up gun and ammo sales. It’s all fucked.

What gets me are the exact same phrases echoed on both sides, time and time again, after this happens.

"Thoughts and prayers"
"No need for knee jerk legislation"
"Thoughts and prayers aren't enough"
"We need to do better"
"Better mental health"

I don't have solutions, but I'm not making a career out of promising people that I do. Legislators are a joke.

Yeah I nearly posted the same thing earlier.

The general public (I’m sure I’m in a bubble but seemingly) - “we should do more to prevent this in the future”
A segment of the population - “I dare you to come take my guns”
Half the politicians - “don’t politicize this. Besides, any legislation is useless because bad people will always find ways to do bad things”
The other half of politicians - “we should do something to stop this” but then don’t ever actually do anything.

It’s all lip service from both sides. Like you said, I don’t know the solution. But the solution sure is shit isn’t doing nothing. The solution sure as shit is not attributing this all to mental health (and then failing to actually do anything about mental health or healthcare in general anyways). They’re elected to, among other things, keep Americans safe. So it’s about fucking time to start doing that.

I will say this though.

Bullying needs to be highlighted. That shit needs to stop. It won't solve all of the problems, but how many of these mass shooters were bullied?

When we (most of us at least) were in school, if we were bullied (I was to a degree) we were at least able to escape the shit when we got home. Now, with social media, the bullying follows these kids everywhere. It's got to take its toll on them.

This is not me excusing any of the behavior we've seen, but if we're going to talk about better mental health, we need to talk about what puts these people on the path they're on.

^Confiscation will absolutely not work, and you know that. That's just an inflammatory talking point.

How about no firearm purchases to anyone under 21? The last round of shooters, including Sandy Hook, were all young. It wouldn't stop the shooting, but why are such young people doing this? That to me seems like some pretty low hanging fruit on which most people would be on board.

I don’t believe I’ve accused anyone of being pro any objectively bad thing

it’s not that difficult to guess what I’d advocate for

strict gun control measures, including a ban on assault rifles

the vast majority of the blame in these goes to the ghouls on your side of the aisle

a ban means nothing without confiscation; there are 100s of millions of these things out there.

what are we suing gun makers for? creating products that kill people or selling them to people that kill people? just curious... doesnt seem like something thats gonna work considering where courts are heading.

red flag laws dont appear to work where theyve been implemented. it would be nice if people like TGL came up with ideas that arent just republican tears.

EDIT: gun insurance makes sense but it isnt going to curb the insane; paying victims would be nice though since suing probably doesnt work.

I assume it’s similar to auto liability insurance. Required in order to own a gun and pays out if that gun injures or causes damage to someone.

I’d wager a guess that a lot of the “confiscation won’t work” crowd thinks that gun owners would shoot and kill anyone who tried to confiscate their guns

there’s only one way to find out/call their bluff

^^It won't pass the courts. Lawmakers are too scared for something so bold.

The pro-gun crowd has had years to make something work, and they haven't. It's time to let the pendulum swing. Ban assault rifles, limit magazines, and involuntary buy-backs to help limit the numbers of pre-existing units.

The solution to this problem is so simple, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned it:

A $3000 stipend from the United States government to every American for purchasing a full body armor set to be worn at all times when out in public.

For any freedom-loving patriots who already own a full body armor set, the stipend can be put toward further adding to their firearm stockpiles and, thus, making the homeland all the more safer.

This shit makes me sick, so forgive me if I have triple checked this story to verify every detail. But am I seeing this right…An armed officer was on campus and this dude still did this? If that’s true, that’s pretty much the end of the “arm the teachers/put cops at every school” argument, right?

^ of course not. That’s just how one side worms it’s way out of confronting this deadly issue.

^^^ That wouldn't even address the movie theaters, the nightclubs, the retails stores...

^ My understanding is that the grocery store in Buffalo had an armed security guard on duty who shot the attacker; however, since the attacker was wearing body armor, he wasn't phased, returned fire and killed the security guard.

I think that another issue that is often overlooked is the Alex Jones type peddling their conspiracy theory/self defense non-sense while selling body armour.

^^its almost worse than that for like 1/3 of our country.

As you mentioned, they shrug off our mass shooting body count, but in the same breathe will be adamant we need to #savethekids or “teachers r turning r kids ghey!1!1!!1!1!” The kids are nothing but a tool to wield at their own political convenience.

I mean just imagine how shallow and disgusting your worldview has to be to simultaneously believe that teachers can’t be trusted because they are grooming kids to be trans and also that teachers should be trusted enough to arm them to defend the kids against armed psychopaths.

It’s up to you to decide on an individual basis if they are too stupid to grasp the inconsistency or if they are just that cynical and political.

[Edited on May 26, 2022 at 7:57 AM. Reason : ^depends on where they fall on the above mentioned spectrum of stupid and cynical]
