^ I did a tour through there a few years ago, and agree it was fairly impressive.

So 14 races have taken place on tracks not named Daytona or Talladega, and there are only 4 race winners in them.

I feel like this should be incredible bench racing fodder as far as the why.

(Elsewhere, someone said if you go back into last year, Truex, Harvick, and Kyle Busch have won 24 of the last 33 races, 3 races short of a calendar year. 3 of the 9 they didn't win were restrictor plate tracks.)

Those 3 have dominated. No idea why, but they are the fastest 3 cars every week. Amazing in this day that secrets can be kept that well.

^^ I compared owner points now to after Sonoma last year. That's the best way to do like vs. like and compare relative field strength.

The top 11 positions in the standings are significantly ahead of where they were after race 16 last year. Getting 40 points for a win, the top 11 are a combined +266 over this point in 2017 and that's with 2nd being down 22. 1st is +37, 3rd is +36, 6th is +35, 7th is +41, 10th is +37, and 11th is +39.

This being points, it's a near zero-sum game, so they have to come from somewhere. That is 12th through 24th, all of which have declined from 2017, and are a combined -210. It is worst in the 18th thru 21st range. 18th is -24, 19th is -44, 20th is -33, and 21st is -21.

25th thru 30th are all positive and 31st thru 36th are all negative.

So the top 11 cars have put a larger gap between themselves and the midfield, the midfield (pretty much the back half of the multi-car well-funded entries where teams expect to win) have fallen back, the tail of what I call the "serious entries" (Leavine, Front Row, Germain, JTG Daugherty) have caught up to the midfield some, and the backmarkers have gotten worse.

theres a reason SHR switched from Chevy to Ford last year and surprised the shit out of everyone and now all the sudden ford is the dominant manufacturer.

I thought NBC had a solid showing. Did a better job of showing battles on track and had better pit reporting. Burton didn't seem to toss out as many banal platitudes as he usually does either. Guess having Junior there to shoulder some of the load, he didn't have to fill as much air and fall back on it as much.

rick allen sucks and dale jr. is not a good commentator (unpopular opinion, but if you're objective about it, he's not very good. maybe he'll improve.), but they did do a better job than fox. the biggest improvement i saw was actually zooming out so you can see what's really going on. fox just stays zoomed in on one or two cars the whole time. i don't need to be able to read the contingency sponsor stickers, i need to see the race.

i wish Chase Elliott "self destructed" as much as larson. But yes, he does lose an inordinate amount of races due to messing up...usually its by rim running and tearing up the right side of his car.

Rick Allen might as well be calling golf. I thought the back and forth between Letarte and Junior was good, although the small little window in the bottom left I could do without.

As far as the end, Kyle didn't even try to hide he drove right in the back of Larson. Haha.

^ they still found a way to gift a win to a Cup regular

I don't understand why they don't just plant grass underneath the double yellow line.

(The answer to your question is no new talent was being created because no one is going to sponsor a driver that was finishing 15th in Nationwide/Xfinity. There's a very long dry spell of you go back and look of new Cup drivers that stuck and made impacts.)

A week late but

Also there's a Twitter video from @MattClarkMC showing Bubba Wallace's incident testing on the Charlotte rival this morning. Some drivers are talking with NASCAR to improve the track limits on things like the chicane because they're all just cheating it as much as they can.

kentucky was actually better than i expected. still a pretty lame race, but there was some strategery and some passing. the clean air problem really needs to be addressed.

USAC has put out a preliminary entry list for the IMS Dirt Track midget race Brickyard 400 week. As of yesterday, 54 cars entered (this is a USAC regular season race). Included are Larson, Chase Briscoe, Stenhouse, and Christopher Bell. Think a few other NASCAR guys will give it a go.

The B-main is going to be awesome.
