Unmarked spoilers in this thread so people won't have to do the 50 spaces technique

Really liked the movie overall.

The entire "chase" sequence dragged on a little too long and could have used some heavier editing. Also, why did the ships stop when they ran out of fuel? Aren't they in space?

And the entire Casino planet adventure was straight out of the prequels.

But the rest I thought was great.

Leia’s “space flying” was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen on film. They definitely should have killed off that character and kept Luke.

What’s with Luke’s speech from the FA trailer? “I have it, my sister has , and now you etc...” Was missing in this movie. Maybe he’ll say it in ghost form ...

sigh

so many things wrong. Obviously I've only seen it once so if any of these are explained and maybe I just missed it, please correct me or elaborate.

- The humor seemed completely out of place. The opening scene when Poe called in to talk to Hux. He was like "Yeah, I'll hold". I get that he's a wisecracking pilot, but why would he be using telephone lingo from the 20th century? Then he made that comment about Hux's mother? So he's resorting to middle school jabs now and making yo mamma jokes? It was hard to take the whole thing seriously with that kind of thing spread out throughout the whole movie. The original trilogy did have some comic relief throughout but it felt natural. This all felt so forced and slapstick. Like Chewie trying to eat that roasted CGI porg and the rocks falling and destroying the cart of that native on the island. The WORST offender was when it cut to a new scene and was a close up of a bunch of steam. It zoomed out and it turned to be an iron. A droid was ironing a First Order uniform. WTF? Why would they have that? That is what I would expect in Spaceballs.

- Superman Space Leia looked AWFUL. How many editors did that get through with them thinking it was good to go? Why would they even write that in? I get that she is sensitive to the Force but there are a 100 more convincing things they could have done to show that.

- The casino planet sub-plot was straight out of the prequels. The whole chase with the horse things and Rose giggling and stuff, all I could think about was "Now THIS is pod racing!". They get stunned/arrested/and thrown in jail for illegally parking their spacecraft on an unoccupied beach? Isn't that a little harsh? It's not like they were dealing with the Empire here. And they just happened to get thrown in a jail cell with the number 1 lockpicker/code breaker in the galaxy?

- Finn and Rose had no chemistry. Their forced romance was unnecessary. Someone on Reddit summed up the character of Rose really well -- she seemed like a one episode side character in the Walking Dead that dies off at the end of the episode. Why did they even have her flying one of those saltskimmer things at the end? She said earlier when she met Finn that she had no fighting experience, she was just a plumber. They had dozens of foot soldiers back at the base with rifles, so why wouldn't they at least put one of them in the cockpit instead of a random plumber?

- How did the code breaker know the Resistance's plan to sneak onto the planet when he sold them out? Finn and Rose didn't even know it. They came back from hyperspace and as far as they knew, their mission was to just shut down the tracking device.

- Why didn't the Vice-Admiral just tell Poe her plan? He asked her like four times and she just got mad at him. Even after he eventually learned what it was, he agreed that it was a good idea. If she had just told him to begin with, the whole sub-plot with Finn and Rose going to the casino planet would never have happened and the entire Resistance would have made it to the planet.

- The shuttle that Finn and Rose stole made it in and out of hyperspace easily without the First Order noticing. Why not just ferry as many of the resistance back and forth to different parts of the galaxy with it? Even if the First Order figured it out, they wouldn't have been able to chase them everywhere.

- Luke forgave Darth Vader, one of the most ruthless and hate-filled Sith in the entire history of the Sith. The man responsible for the death of literally billions of people. Yet despite constant manipulation from Palpatine, he REFUSED to kill him. Despite that, he saw the darkness in Kylo Ren and he came within an inch of killing him BEFORE HE HAD EVEN DONE ANYTHING WRONG.

- The first lesson Luke gave Rey. She saw that weird dark pit thing (that was never really explained) and he literally exclaimed "You went to the dark side without even hesitating." Yet it is never mentioned again and he continues to train her. Not even telling her how dangerous the dark side is or anything like that.

- When Rey went to the First Order dreadnaught to confront Kylo Ren. They dropped out of hyperspace and she went out on that ejection pod thing. Why couldn't the Resistance or Chewie or someone do the same thing, but instead of dropping Rey, just drop a shit load of bombs?

That being said, there were a lot of parts that I really did enjoy. Throne room fight scene was excellent. I'm surprised they killed of Snoke so quickly, it was bold, but I'm glad they didn't have a long drawn out ending for him like with Palpatine. The scene when the Vice-Admiral rammed the First Order at light speed was brilliant. I didn't see it coming at all and when it went completely silent and all you could was the debris floating around, that was amazing. Adam Driver did a really good job with Kylo Ren, showing his internal struggle between light and dark. I actually enjoyed most of the scenes with him in them.

I know but it seemed like the trailer voice over sounded like the grizzled old Last Jedi Luke and not the younger “Return” Luke. I dunno, guess I overthought it.

^^ Agree with pretty much most of the above. I really liked the last 30 minutes or so, but I felt like there was a lot wrong with the plot for the first 2 or so hours of the movie. Things happened that didn't make sense (like the whole thing about Benicio Del Toro's codebreaker knowing the entire rebel plan somehow, Laura Dern's character not explaining her plan to Poe) and certain things that felt really odd (Leia out in space, Snoke getting absolutely zero back story, etc.).

^Yeah I forgot to talk about Snoke. At the end of Return of the Jedi, both Sith are dead and it is heavily implied that Luke is the only person in the galaxy with formal training with the Force. How did Snoke become a Sith Lord? I get that Snoke could have just naturally been strong with the Force, but without anyone to train him, how would he get to that point? Keep in mind that Luke and Anakin, the two most powerful Jedis in existence, still could barely even make a light switch flicker with Force powers until they started their training.

On top of that how did Rey get to where she is too? She literally "taught herself" the Jedi mind trick in the Force Awakens and Snoke even said that she beat Kylo Ren in a saber duel despite the fact that she had never even picked up a lightsaber before. Before Luke "died" (or joined the force, whatever the whole disappearing thing that Obi-Wan and Yoda did), he mentioned that Rey was truly the last Jedi. So like two days worth of training and someone who was swayed to the dark side almost immediately is a Jedi now? At least Luke was on Dagobah with Yoda for a few weeks.

The Matrix Reloaded > The Matrix Revolutions
TFA > TLJ

The first introduced questions that people speculated over and held people's interest. The second ignored it all and tossed the potential in the garbage. Where some of the fanfic speculation ends up being better than the direction the film took.

lol yep. She was in the Force Awakens for like 10 mins (not sure how she made it off Starkiller Base), and I just figured she'd show up and have a bigger role in the later movies. Nope. I'll admit I did enjoy the fight scene with her a Finn though.

There are so many things to nit pick. Some really awesome moments. Some really unfortunate.

Lets hope that Snoke, Luke, Phasma, are gone for good. They have too many characters. Finn needed to sacrifice himself or Rose needed to take his place. Get rid of more characters.

Poe was originally supposed to die. They need to clear the board a bit.

Awesome moments:
-The way Snoke died
-The way Snoke's ship gets cracked and all the visuals it created. This does create problems with, why don't they
just create a bunch of sacrificial hyperspace cubes as unstoppable missiles.
-Poe's stalling at the beginning
-The fleets relative situation. While awesome, it doesn't make sense that they couldn't bring in smaller ships to -
take out that cruiser. Especially given the time it took to resolve.
-Porgs are kewl
-Luke never steps in the white salt areas. So it doesnt give away that hes not there

Liked moments:
-Force minds connecting. While I like it and it raises a lot of possibilities, it really throws a curve ball into what the force is. Controversial. He literally transferred rain from across the galaxy.
-All of the Luke and Rey moments on the island. While they dont explain everything it was interesting enough.
-Rey's parents

Unfortunate:
-Snoke's guards and how they moved.
The design, the lack of martial correctness, etc.
-The way Luke acts while facing down Ren. It makes sense but isn't shot right. The angles chosen, the facial
expressions, the physical mannerisms.
-Nipple Milking
-Leia moving through space. All they had to do is make her pull on debris to transfer momentum to her.
SOMETHING to show what shes doing. It makes sense, but the way it was shot was shown was meh.
-Luke never leaves that island.
-Rey still doesn't feel like shes been trained. Shes just doing everything.
-They don't explain what Ren really wants after Snoke dies.
-Why are those kids on that planet and I am supposed to care?
-Those bombers speed made no sense. Its space. Everything can move fast.

Hated:
-Rose - all of it.
-Finn not sacrificing himself.
-Rose saving Finn from sacrificing himself.
-Rose not taking Finn's place in sacrificing herself.
-The size of the resistance.
-They killed Ackbar.
-All of the animal cruelty things.
-The physical reality of fighting and physics not being reasonable in salt planet fight.
-A miniaturized death star run on the salt planet.
-Phasma. Let her be dead.

As of right now

1 Empire Strikes Back
2 A New Hope
3 Rogue One
4 Force Awakens
5 Return of the Jedi
6 The Last Jedi
7 Revenge of the Sith
8 Phantom Menace
9 Clone Wars

^Agree with you on nearly everything. A few points:

Quote :
"This does create problems with, why don't they
just create a bunch of sacrificial hyperspace cubes as unstoppable missiles."

They could easily say that it it would require a human pilot or some junk. Although given that BB-8 can do just about anything now, including hijacking an AT-ST and fighting multiple prison guards at once, it would be a stretch to assume a droid couldn't pilot it. Although they have never really explained if droids are considered sentient or something so I guess moral issues or whatever. Not that the First Order would give two shits about that.

Quote :
"Force minds connecting."

The way they used the Force in this was inconsistent. Leia up until now has experienced emotions and been able to sense people she feels strongly about, which is exactly what you would expect someone who is strong with the force but with no formal training to be at. The fact that she learned telekinesis at some point and just now decided to use it was a stretch. Same with Snoke transferring the rain. If he can teleport matter like that, there are a thousand other questions to go with it.

Quote :
"Snoke's guards and how they moved."

Ren should have been able to tear them apart (almost literally) without even turning on his lightsaber. He stopped a blaster bolt in mid-air. I suppose it is plausible that maybe Snoke gave them some kind of force training. Regardless, it was a really good fight scene.

Quote :
"Leia moving through space."

I already talked about it a bit but maybe the better thing to do would have her create a force field or something that encapsulated the room before she got shot out into space. Wouldn't have looked nearly as cheesy as her flying around like Superman and would have been a little more consistent with what force powers we've seen her use already.

Quote :
"Why are those kids on that planet and I am supposed to care?"

The kids are representative of the people in the galaxy being exploited by the First Order (and in this case, the Resistance too since they bought from the arms dealer). Poe's speech about lighting the spark of the Resistance or whatever and the inspiration of Finn/Rose's deeds and Luke standing alone against the First Order ground forces. Still a stretch though.

Quote :
"Rose saving Finn from sacrificing himself."

lol. "I don't want you to die. So I am going to ram into you at full force which could potentially kill both of us while at the same time allowing the superweapon to fire"

Quote :
"-The size of the resistance."

Yes. The First Order blowing up five planets out of the galaxy should not have reduced their size to that. It would be like if North Korea nuked five major cities and somehow that reduced the entire US military to a handful of Navy ships.

They could have resolved the issue with Laura Dern's character not telling anyone the plan by having Hux say there was a Spy on board and Dern knows about it so she had to keep the plans secret.

Because the movie was filled with people making mistakes, but most were realistic and that was the only one that really strained credibility.

ya'll some picky motherfuckers

this is so easily better than TFA because

a) TFA is just a rehash. TLJ does some shit I really didn't expect (even after reading about the film being "surprising"). The astral projection, telepathy, Leia flying, random kids having force powers. It's all new.
b) the subplots with Skywalker and Ren are legitimately interesting
c) even the throwbacks (like the cave where Rey tried to find her parents) were awesome and original

I have complaints, but they're so minor in the face of this finally being a decent Star Wars film

I'm curious how they're going to kill Leia and I really don't want CGI Leia again. I wish both Snoke and Ren had more elaborate motivations and goals, though you know the original villains weren't any better. Ren alone doesn't seem like a great villain, but we'll see.

I felt that the biggest mistake was not letting Rey join Ren at the end. That was such an obvious way to end the middle film on a low point and have an interesting cliffhanger. Instead, there's pretty much nothing left for IX to do. Basically, I expect the last film to suck ass because they've put themselves in a corner.

Quote :
"Despite that, he saw the darkness in Kylo Ren and he came within an inch of killing him BEFORE HE HAD EVEN DONE ANYTHING WRONG."

Well, besides being his FATHER, it's not really that surprising. People have emotions and act erratically and Skywalker is already nervous about Jedis falling to the darkside by this point. I wished it was explained in more detail, but it wasn't bad.

Yeah and Ren was his nephew. That he had likely known since birth and babysat for when Han and Leia went out for dinner and took the water park when be was 5. And was also completely innocent at that point.

Overall I really liked it. My issues (somewhat rehashed from others)...

-Snoke just dies. His identity was a huge mystery in TFA, and they just kill him (though in a cool way). Whether you believe Anakin balanced the force at the end of 3 (correct) or 6 (wrong), the presence of another Sith lord should not have been possible.
-Rey's parents. Just junkies? Really?
-Poe messed up so bad and for no reason. It was so bad Carrier Fisher died IRL.
Like didn't give Kylo the same benefit of the doubt as Vader, even at the end.

^ I never cared about Snoke's identity. I never wanted him to be someone we knew or related to someone we knew. I also didn't have a problem with his death. But I did want to know a little about his backstory. When someone has scars like that and is that powerful, you have to think it would be interesting to know how it happened.

I'm not upset about Rey's parents, in fact the closer I got to this move the more I felt that Rey would come from nothing. The fanboy in me wanted her to be Kenobi's granddaughter, but narratively and symbolically I think it works better to show that the force can come from anywhere.

He did give Kylo the benefit of the doubt (well, I mean, since he wasn't actually there it wasn't really a risk for Luke like it was when he faced Vader, but Kylo didn't know that). He turned off his lightsaber and gave him a chance to take the peaceful option.

For all of the people on the internet and beyond who are like “Rey Luke Anakin Kylo blah blah blah power training blubber etc.”

Has it ever occurred to you that Rey might be the most powerful Jedi who ever has existed? Why can’t she be? Because she might be. For fucks sake. Perhaps your great-granddaddy was great with fires and his buckets. But then your grandaughter’s got a goddamn firehose because she fucking does.

It was a shitty movie by star wars standards. this is a popcorn trilogy. lots of comedy, catch prhases and good looking, shoulder brushing, popcorn action. Might as well be watching avengers with an ESB flavor.

they fucked up bad making tfa when episode 7 should have been about the fall of kylo ren. they realized they could never go back so they gave us the flashback scenes.

we don't know the story about rey's parents is true. the writers might have just been stalling. Why is she entangled with kylo ren?

we now know 9 will involve a tree planet and prolly another star killer. rey will save ren at the end and there will be lots of popcorn and celebrating cute creatures

At least they did R1 right now we have to watch this shit over and over before we can be dissappointed one last time in 2019,

They should have had one of them switch sides. It was setup in a way that either of them could have, but was pretty predictable in what actually happened.

There was so much potential in a Ren and Rey vs Snoke or a Rey and Ren vs the galaxy situation that was just wasted.

And while Snoke's death was a cool scene, it was pretty frustrating. For two years there have been so many questions about him (who really is he? where did he come from? where was he in the original trilogy? who trained him?) and now Rian is like 'fuck you guys, he doesn't even matter.'

Was there even a plan for the entire trilogy or is whoever is writing each movie just making it up as they go along?

Reach out.

No. Reach OUT.

Why are you here?

No. Why are YOU here?

You went directly to the darkness with no control. [Luke says he cannot train someone like (rae)]
(goes on to train rae)
(rae literally goes directly into the dark pit and spends time there)
(no consequences)

Its a pretty lame excuse to say the whole movie was just setting up for the next movie. Thats what the last movie did.

I like Finn and Rose but its like the whole irrelevant side plot only existed to give the minority characters some action since they couldn't figure out how to write them into the real plot. Weak. That could have just been a separate movie. It had nothing to do with this one and that is the first time a side plot has been done in 8 films.

Maybe i just need to watch it again. I have movie pass and will prolly go back tonight.

Best parts:

Light speed bullet thru the star destroyer

Rey & kylo fighting against snokes guards

Final fight with luke & kylo.

Biggest fail:

Not developing rey more. She should have joined kylo (ben). In fact no character development happened in this film, we're at the same spot after TFA with less resistance, more first order and the hint that more people will join the nee "rebellion"

^^Yoda was actually one of the things I liked. I'm glad they went with puppet Yoda rather than CGI Yoda. He seemed a lot more like the Yoda from the original trilogy than the military commander from the prequels.

^Agree on the biggest fail. One of the themes of the movie was that the Jedi were done, and that there should be no dark/light side type thing. Rey joining with Kylo would have made her a little more evil and him a little more good and together they would have worked off each other to be "grey". Would have been a very interesting and new/bold take on the entire mantra of Sith vs. Jedi.

Some stuff has been touched on but for me:

Pros:
- Rey just being some nobody. Would feel so forced to have her be from some famous lineage.
- BB-8 and everything
- The how of Snoke's death
- John Boyega's performances.
- The connected through the force mind scenes.
- Just the right amount of Porgs.

Cons:
- Since you're already on a suicide mission Laura Dern, how about you turn that thing around and do that a bit sooner. Like at the beginning or maybe after they discover the cloaked ships?
- The why of Snoke's death (Snoke in general). Why are you doing this? Why all the vitriol for Luke. Did you ever interact? Is he just a disgruntled imperial or what? I'm sure some novel or comic will explain this but I don't give a shit about those so tell me in the movie.
- I mean I literally thought Snoke was going to pull himself back together after that because I was sure there had to be more and there was going to be a plot point about how unkillable he was and all the injuries and whatnot.
- Everything on the casino planet and with the kid's feels like the absolute worst of George Lucas. Plus it seems they were gone way too long for the space chase to have just remained at a basic status quo.
- Daisy Ridley is not a great actress, though it could be others are giving pretty good performances. She is kinda that blank slate main character you play in a video game where everyone around you has more personality and stuff.
- The Rey/Finn/Rose love triangle that is forming here.
- In general motivations and logic for why anyone does anything here.

All in all I was really entertained and it was an awesome looking movie but I think some of the plot and story issues are gonna bother me and it might have a harder time on secondary viewings. I actually lean more towards preferring Force Awakens but admittedly that had a lower bar to clear.

3 directors for 3 movies of the same trilogy isn't the best thing for story continuity and mood, but TFA and TLJ have both been pretty entertaining and had appropriate ratios of action, humor, humanity, etc compared to the first trilogy. Two movies in, it's much better than the prequels overall so that's good.

^^Ok, clearly I'm uninformed. But aside from Lucas giving each movie the green light, aren't they much more "separate" in creation, at least TFA and TLJ, compared to the original trilogy?

^ tough to say what's going on behind the scenes. I assume that it's kind of like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or just comics in general) where people came together to craft an outline for the trilogy, and then the individual movies can do whatever they want as long as they hit on certain points. But I'm uninformed on that as well.

I really liked this movie. I'm biased towards Rian Johnson, but I really didn't want another retread of the original trilogy, and I liked that most of the places they could have done the same thing, they didn't. The action was all great, I liked the humor, etc.

I was a little offput by Finn's initial reaction when they get to the casino - he lost all sense of urgency - and I'm still digesting the Leia thing.. but other than that, I loved it.

Those bombers' design was a bit... flawed.

^Yeah good point. I didn't think about that originally. Why would they even be dropping traditional bombs like that? Why would they even "fall" in space? My only thought is that maybe torpedoes that they launch in other ships (Y-wings, Kylo Ren's special TIE fighter, etc.) maybe couldn't carry enough firepower to take out something as big as a dreadnought.

I had more issue with them being slower than anything we've seen in SW and infinitely fragile.

Also, if you're plan is to sacrifice yourself because the ships can't autopilot (Lucius is still working on the autopilot), why did it take seeing a good 4 ships get blasted to turn and allah hu admiral akbar yourself?

Yeah I had basically already forgotten all the ridiculousness of the space battles in this fucking movie. Those goddamn bombs. Man. Fucking fuck.

lol BB-8 can kick the asses of a bunch of prison guards and hi-jack an AT-ST, and R2-D2 can autopilot an X-wing but the top scientists and engineers in the Star Wars universe can't design an AI or droid to hyperdrive one of those gigantic starships into some baddies.

So, what you could do, is have Haldo (sp?) say right before she goes into hyperspace, "This is why you don't build ships that big." BOOM

This then sets up rule that a ship that big cant get out of the way another about to hyperspace into them. And also the lack of return of concentrating your resources into something that big. Minimizing projection of power.

Also, on smaller scales, that kind of attack could be ineffective against shields perhaps. For example, an xwing hyper-spacing into a Star destroyer.

But something as large as that mon cal cruiser it has too much mass to stop. And there wouldn't ever be a reason to do it unless you're presented with an enormous target like that.
