It's Chewbacca's origin story. That's enough for me to like it.

I enjoyed it.

Not sure why it did so poorly. My only thought is that perhaps Star Wars fans were not ready for a completely self-contained Star Wars movie that didn't have really any impact on the larger universe we know. In other words, it didn't really help/hurt the rebellion or the resistance. Yea there was a line in there with regards to funding the rebellion, but that was it.

however, it does have me curious as to Darth Maul's organization, and I wish we could see more interaction with it, and how it plays in with the empire.

Did it actually do poorly in the common sense of the phrase or did it just make a less obscene amount of money?

about $400mil on a $275mil budget, and i think that's before marketing and shit. they certainly made some money but not the amount they projected. plus didn't they sink a shitload of money into the ron howard reshoots?

bummed we won't get more maul story though (i assume)

I think in Disney money, if it doesn't make a billion dollars then it didn't do well.

They're getting greedy.

I thought this movie was good but totally inessential. Just a fun romp but something I didn't think about after about a week.

Also, the movie was way too dark. Not tonally dark, but literally dark. So many scenes were just incomprehensable because the lighting was shit. Maybe they had to film it that way because of all the reshoots and the budget was gone, so they hid the cheap effects in darkness, but it looked so bad for many of the shots.

Which was a shame because I thought the cinematography was good. Everything seemed well framed. The scenes looked like they could be beautiful if only I could see what was in them.

So I think the 3 biggest reasons it did poorly were:
1) Star Wars has established dominance over the month of December for 3 straight years, that's when everyone is now used to getting their new Star Wars movie. But now you want to release one in May? 5 months after the last movie? A large part of your audience will be fatigued from Star Wars and another large part (the people who enjoy watching Star Wars but don't necessarily follow Star Wars) won't even realize it's coming out.
2) Garbage marketing. There were no advertisements for this movie until it was about 3 months out. The first teaser was during the Superbowl and even then it was rare to see it on TV with Disney pumping their other movies like Black Panther.
3) Nobody asked for a Han Solo movie. I think everyone liked Han Solo as he was. Should have made Obi-Wan with McGregor.

Yeah I think it's safe to say it lost some money considering the budget, reshoots, and all of that. With Netflix, Blu-Ray, and TV rights and everything they might make most of their money back eventually, if they are lucky.

This movie, like most movies, made money. They do some wonky accounting that claim movies make less than they actually do in order to pay less royalties and shit. But yeah this movie was not a giant blockbuster like other SW movies, but I think that is 100% because it isnt part of the main line of SW movies. It was a better film than a lot of them, but I bet all the negative press about the production of this movie kept a lot of people away.

Also, I bet they will continue this Darth Maul storyline in a future movie. People fucking love Darth Maul.

I wouldn't mind more Darth Maul.

And I thought Ehrenreich, did a pretty good job - probably as good of a job as anyone else could do, of imitating Ford's Solo. Short of getting Ford to play this role and then retrofitting a younger face, they could not have done better.

I was hoping for a little bit more epic meet-up of Han and Chewy, other than "he helped me get out of jail." I thought Han helped Chewy fight the empire on Kashek(sp?) or something. Oh well. It was still a good movie.

I know all the scenes with Paul Bettany were reshoots, since Omar from the Wire was originally cast to play the villain but wasn't available for reshoots.

I had extremely low expectations since I had basically heard it was horrible before going in.... and I actually really loved it. Great movie. Can't wait for the blu-ray.

I just watched it and don't really have anything to add, but I was reading through this thread and saw this

"Pretty hilarious that bbehe thinks Michael B Jordan would be a better pick. Creed as a movie was good, but he's not a good actor. What role is he actually believable in?"

Lmao what a horrible horrible take
