Reminds me of Earl's insistence that our D line will be much better without a top 5 NFL draft pick

"I'm not sure how losing a qb that can evade rushers, hit receivers on a dime 50 yds downfield and requires a spy every play would make OL and WR look BETTER"

OL always say it's easier to protect a pocket passer than a mobile QB. You know your assignment and you know where your QB's launch point is designed to be. With Jackson, he was breaking out of the pocket regularly and it puts extra pressure on your tackles. He also held the ball too long at times which also puts pressure on the OL. This often leads to more holds. I'm not saying their OL is going to become elite or anything, I just think their job will be easier and they could have more success in pass protection with a pocket passer at QB.

Lamar didn't hit hardly anything on a dime. He missed plenty of deep throws last year and he put too much heat on short passes(Cam style) which led to drops(particularly on slants). Once again, not saying they're going to have All-ACC WRs, just saying that I think a more accurate passer who works within the system more instead of free-lancing could make the WRs look better.

We know Pitino has a good system, it's just that he abandoned that the last 2 years because he had one of the best players in the country and wanted to take advantage of that.

He completed 60% of his passes and was 12th in the nation in yards per attempt

Plus the OL and WR will have to deal with one extra man in coverage or pass rushing next season. So those WRs that he missed will be less open and those OL might know where the QB is but they are blocking an extra man

Offense looks good...DBs look bad...typical for DD.

Harmon and Finley will put up a lot of yards this year.

Pratt will lead the team in tackles.

Believe Dunn made all of his kicks. There was little-to-no crowd noise but pretty miserable conditions.

Think you'll see Bambard on kickoffs and Dunn on FG/XPs this year.

That's actually not unreasonable given our attrition on defense(tons of experience) and offense(2 best OL, best RB, best weapon).

Would be a hell of a year if we managed to be a top 25 team, so I'd say 25-45 is probably the right range for us at this point.

^ I agree, have been pretty surprised with expectations thus far. We aren't a perennial top 5 recruiting team like Bama, Clemson, or Ohio State to just reload with overwhelming young talent to replace all that experience we just lost

Losing Hines hurt the most. We struggled without him last year. Otherwise, I would expect to get better. The defense lost a lot but can't get much worse. The overall defensive unit will likely be better even if the dline isn't as good. The coaching improvement should help a lot but personel wise, our defense performed at its floor last year. I'm actually hoping we can get our defense back to 2016 levels but its likely to be somewhere between 2016 and 2017.

Its really all going to come down to how well Meyers, Person, Gallapsy and whoever else can fill the samuels/hines roles.

[Edited on April 16, 2018 at 8:34 PM. Reason : its not really about people. its about performance.]

I agree, losing Hines was a crucial loss, but I think Will Richardson was a substantial loss too. Had we brought both of those guys back, I'd feel like we had a legit shot to push for a top 25 team if we stayed healthy and caught some breaks.

I think our defense is going to be a work in progress. I imagine early on we're going to have some really tough games(I just don't see a way we beat WVU) with the learning curve starting so many new players, but I could see a situation where by the end of the year our team is really building some momentum and getting better.

DL should take a step back from ability and experience.
LB are more athletic but less experienced.
CBs are more athletic but less experienced.
Ss are the same guys we had last year.

I think once we actually get some of that experience along the DL, LBs, and CBs, we could be really good. But this does seem like PRiv's last year where we have the potential for a really potent offense but the defense is going to be very talented but very young.

Our OL was getting worked a bit by our DL in the Spring Game...and our starting 2 DT's were out of the game. Hopefully the OL will get it together in Fall camp.

Alston and Stevens both ran 4.5 40s. Not sure their other measurables, but not slouches

^Boone played Nickel, so I lumped him with CBs. He'll be replaced by a transfer, so could be some new blood and probably a better fit at the position.

Our FS and SS 2-deep will be the same as last year.

Alston was a converted WR who only played the position for 1 year. Steven was a solid player but seemed to always be dealing with injuries.

Aside from Trowell, we actually have a platoon of guys who have actually played CB for several years and are also athletic. Valdez would have been a starter last year for most of the season if he didn't get hurt, McCloud started quite a bit, Ingram started and played some, etc. Then add in some of the young guys like 4* Graves(early enrollee) and4* Palmer, then the JUCO in Miller, hard not to think our CBs could be better overall once they pick up some in-game experience.

Ah I thought nickels would go with safeties since Boone is a career safety. Boone prob played half his snaps at safety last year.

Also that CB stuff is the opposite of what you first said. You first said we lose experience but then talk about how inexperienced our CBS were vs how experienced they are now. I'm also hesitant to call practice time "experience" especially since Valdez was hurt all year.

Stephen Griffin is playing nickel too btw, maybe that's an upgrade. I think agree SS should be same problem better. I think CBs and FS are a question mark. Have to see if McCloud can produce as full time starter, who steps up next to him, and if Kidd Glass or Wright can step up to be full time FS, since i think both were benched/demoted late last year

"Less experienced", meant mainly in college games. I mean Alston had at least played 3 seasons of college football and redshirted a year, so he knew the speed of the game and we physically ready to contribute, he just had to learn the position. Stevens had a ton of experience but really think the injuries held him back last year.

McCloud and Ingram both played a decent amount last year, and Valdez was slated to play a ton of minutes so it should speak to what type of players the coaches think he is. Hopefully he can come back healthy. Though I saw Trowell was starting in the Spring game, hoping he is either a revelation at the position or that we have someone else beat him out for the gig and he's more of a depth guy.

I guess I could see NB being lumped in with the safeties, esp. in our scheme versus a more traditional NFL look where we basically play a LB/S hybrid as our 5th defensive back.

I'm going to say yes. I believe the State owns the faculty/staff parking area immediately beside trinity lot. Everything past that (two houses/all the grass parking) is what has been sold.

So seriously, where are all those fans going to park now? Are they creating new parking areas, or are they expecting people to park and ride?

That's really going to take away a lot of the game day experience. It going to suck.

What do you want the university to do about it? Spend millions of dollars to outbid a real estate developer?

Yeah, it sucks for tailgating, but you can't fault the landowners for wanting to make bank.

But I'm seriously wondering where all those fans are going to park. It's a legitimate question. That's a lot of cars.

the university or state owns enough undeveloped land in that same area to offset the loss of parking, there is ~15 acres between close-king and blue ridge south of westchase and another 8ish acres north of westchase beside the practice lots. and the NCDOT and SHP properties are at least 10 acres that could maybe be traded for land somewhere else if it came to that in the future (i'm sure the vet school would want the SHP lot at some point)

it will suck and i'm worried it will change the nature of tailgating, but there is enough space there for parking if they want to use it.

as long as it's not parking decks i think we will be okay

Yeah talking about 1500+ parking spots, but I think we can offset it, it's just more the "tradition" those 2 lots held more than anything.

I do wonder why someone would bid "top dollar" for those parking lots. Good chunk of land but I'm not sure I'd love living in that area given the traffic concerns around the State Fair, concerts, basketball, football, and hockey.

It's not tradition. It's just those were the best tailgating spots because it's where the unwashed masses parked. Also you could pee in the woods.

There hasn't been a question who the starting kicker would be heading into next year for over a year(since Dunn committed). Barring an injury he was going to be "the guy".

One report was that he hadn't missed a single kick in the Spring, not sure if that still holds now but this was the report going into the Spring game(that he also didn't miss in). Once again, this is all practice, and reportedly Bambard was solid in practice too. Will be interesting to see how he does in live-action and after a miss.

This is nothing new...but damn, Dunn is gonna have the highest expectations/most pressure to perform of any true freshmen football player at State in recent memory imo. There’s been plenty of heralded recruits but I think most fans are reasonable about what to expect from a true freshman at other positions

bambards kicks werent just pressure kicks but they were momentus occasions. that clemson kick had the weight of 30 years of nc state athletics on his shoulders. prollly the most pressurized kick in recent college football history. even kicking for a national title would be less because its something the fans of those schools have already experienced.

Good stuff from the ACC spring football teleconference:

DD:

On D-Line:

""We have a very talented young man that we signed, Alim McNeil coming in, that's 300 pounds now. Excited about him competing at the defensive tackle spot as well. "

" We have a junior college transfer coming in, and Grant Gibson, who is a redshirt freshman, took advantage of a lot of reps this spring and improved. Shug Frazier was injured and hopefully will be back in the summer."

On RB's:

"It's too early to say. I would love to say that that's what Reggie could do(be a 3 down back). He did not go through a lot of the spring. He's limited. Just trying to take care of him a little bit here and there, and he needs to have a really good summer to be in tip-top shape to be in there as much as he can be in there."

"It's a wide open position from a rotation standpoint right now. Ricky Person who is here, graduated early, he's a very talented young running back, and 200-plus pounds of great speed. So I'm looking for Ricky to be a guy that plays early."

On Carson Wise:

"he has an injury in his leg and probably won't play again.""
