Just watched the entire thing. Several fist bumps ensued. Are you going to buy TWW now?

I wouldn't know what to do with it if I did. However, I have considered buying an ad announcing my victory and pointing out that I exceeded FroshKiller's (frankly insulting) estimate of two measly grand by $21,201. (And, for that matter, beat the average one-day winning by several thousand, but who's counting)

How are winnings taxed? Yes, I could probably Google this, but I'll take anything to facilitate active discussion on TWW at this point.

^^As I understand it, they're taxed as regular income. And since it was won in California, I'll be paying their taxes. From my very rough estimates, Friday's haul will work out to around 15-16k when all is said and done.

It really wasn’t that poorly formed of a question. Hell of a game.

Here’s the quote: “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

It was a good bet

History is his strongest category (obviously not fiction novels...) and the other players were strong as well, so betting they would get it right was the best strategy.

Good game though, Congrats Ian

Did they ask you to do the eyebrow thing in the beginning or you just did that?

No it wasn’t. Middle player pretty much had to bet to cover, so his only chance is if she gets it wrong. He needed to have money leftover in case he got it wrong too. Player three bet a weird amount too

Congrats on the win and doing great on the show

It was a shitty question, but that's not really the problem; a shitty question means everybody gets it wrong.

The problem was my shitty bet. I studied the betting strategy. I knew, and know, what I should do in that situation. But at that moment I didn't just forget the strategy - I forgot that there was a strategy. Originally I bet all but $5, then asked them to wipe it and bet everything. Even the original bet would have been dumb, but it would have made me $1000 richer.

That was just me. IDK why I did it. Seemed funny at the time.

Okay I see what you’re saying

Player 2 was in the lead with 12600 player 3 has 12000

For player 2 to guarantee a win in all conditions, assuming she and player 3 get it right, but hedge if everyone gets it wrong, she’d need to wager at least 11401 (looks like this is what she tries to do but did her math wrong ).

Ian couldn’t win if everyone got it right and wagered optimally, so next thing to consider is if everyone got it wrong (but wagered optimally for getting it right), which means Ian’s best wager is no more than 9800

Yeah, I imagine that is a stressful spot. Being in the lead it’s easy. How long do you have to make your wagers?

I also didn’t catch that player two screwed up her wager so yes the right wager for her was 12401

You have a fairly long time to make wagers. Not unlimited, but several minutes at least. Still, though, my brain was fried.

In my position the only "rational" bet is to assume that (a) other players will be rationally, and (b) the other players will get it wrong, since that's the only chance you have anyway. So Player 2 had to bet $11,401; Player 3 had a few options which get a bit complicated; I should have bet anywhere between $1,001 and $9,000. The $1,001 covers a surprise $0 bet from the lead if I get it right and they get it wrong, and anything up to nine grand keeps me safe in a triple stumper.

I think what hurt the most was your $4,000 gamble on the 2nd Daily Double that put you behind the eight ball.

^^Yep. That was stupid. Art is one of my weaknesses, and I should have been thinking about that rather than being cocky based on how I did previously.

It probably cost me the game - had I been in the lead I would have known to bet the same way I did on Friday, which would have left me defeating the other two based on the bets they actually made. BUT - if second place had bee rationally, they would have beaten me.

Last night's showing almost hurt to watch. It's so frustrating seeing you spam the buzzer and still not get in first!

Awesome work in both rounds though. Hopefully it was a pretty great experience overall.

The check arrived! After California takes its pound of flesh, I received $22,506. It's true that Uncle Sam will borrow a few grand, and the voracious buzzards at my student loan holder will sate themselves on much of the rest, but still. Not bad for a day's work.

Hopefully the bank lets me hold onto the physical check so I can get it framed with my Trebek picture so that years from now I can point back on this summer as the point when my life peaked before its inevitable slide into toil, senescence, and death.

I would like to think that my prize was paid for exclusively by advertisements for fiber supplements or "sexy" adult diapers or some other geriatric nonsense.

Grumpy, you can deposit online with your bank's app if you have a bank that isn't like seriously archaic. Then you can keep the check.

So, my bank does indeed have such an app, but there is a limit on how much I can deposit with it every month. And that limit, while more than generous enough for my day-to-day financial needs, did not extend to $22,506.93. That's the amount that was on the check I received after California took its chunk (the IRS hasn't had a go yet).

So I couldn't mobile deposit. That sucks, but OK, I figured I'd go into the bank and reason with them. You can always reason with a bank employee. You can always reason with a farm animal, too, for all the fucking good it will do you. If you want to see a SunTrust bank manager's eyes pop, ask him if you can deposit a check but keep the physical copy.

"No, I don't think we could do that...we'd just be trusting you not to deposit it again."
"But when I mobile deposit, I keep the checks, and that doesn't seem to bother anybody."
"Well, I mean...right."
"And those checks would be for smaller, less conspicuous amounts of money, the kind that a criminal might actual expect to get away with."
"Um..."
"So you're telling me that if this were three checks for less than $8,000 apiece, I could mobile deposit all of them, and SunTrust would have zero concerns. But if I deposit this one check with you right now, and let you stamp the check 'VOID' or 'PAID' or whatever, that's going to be a problem. And meanwhile you know that I am intelligent enough to win at Jeopardy!, but you also think I am so venal and stupid that I will attempt to cash the same check for $22,506.93 - a very large and specific amount of money - several times."
"...I can make you a copy of the check."
"Fine, whatever."

I wanted to make a big stink out of it and keep my copy, and maybe if I'd come back the next day and spoken with the regional manager or something it would have worked. But I was sweating every second I had that check on my person. All I could think was, "What if this is the day I get mugged? What if I leave it somewhere? Is Sony gonna send another check?" I wanted to get that thing out of my possession and into a bank ASAP. I took my shitty photocopy check and went home.

They couldn't put some sort of stamp on the back of the check showing that it's been deposited? Seems odd that you couldn't keep the check

Congrats btw
