It's Year One and you already feel like you have to be contrarian about the coach

Yeah it's frustrating, since he started keatts has lost every single game in which the other team outscored us

Honestly, the team that excited me all year isn't the team I saw in the ACCT or NCAAT games.

I'm not sure what happened.

We were fairly uneven all year

This game was a fair approximation of who we were all told. When we went on that run last month we were shooting 50% from 3 and teams were shooting 25% from 3. Yeah, you can influence that, but those numbers weren't sustainable.

You say I am contrarian then you make a sarcasm about my obvious statement (which was a figure of speech in itself) what is contrarian about that? What is the consensus that my post was contrary to?

Are you saying I'm contrarian because no one else is "still on board"?

What is your angle?

We killed ourselves at the foul line and missed too many 3 pointers. All we needed was probably 4 more free throws made and another couple of 3 pointers. That would have pushed us over the top and gotten us a win.

This game wasnt about offense. We scored enough points to win. The problem was our defense. Specifically Beverly's (non) defense. He is so small and slow, everyone else has to worry about D'ing up their man and helping out on Beverly. Most of Yurt's fouls came from playing help defense after Beverly got blown by. So not only was Beverly non existent on the offensive end, but his awful defense led Yurt to get into foul trouble so he couldn't get going.

Literally the worst take I've seen. KK has a great defensive system that is definitely over your head.

Free throw shooting was awful and seemed to get worse and worse at the end of the year. Our defense was non existent in the first half and I felt like I was watching a Gott defense with the number of open 3's we gave up. The stupid defense of pressing the other team and giving up wide open layups while forcing no turnovers killed us for the 2nd game in a row. I guess Keatts philosophy is we wear the other team down but it didn't work.

Please explain the help principals to me then because I've never seen the absence of help defense by design unless you are up 3 at the end of the game.

Was this new to anyone? Its should not have been a surprise and is not a legitimate excuse. I'm sure Seten Hall has played against a guard smaller or slower than beverly at some point this year but they didn't score this many points. You have to make adjustments that fit your players or don't play them.

You can't blame the players for a complete failure on defense. You can't even blame it all on the previous coach. It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. We can like Keatts and still admit it was bad defense all season with no meaningful adjustments.

why haven't you been hired as a coach yet?

[Edited on March 15, 2018 at 11:43 PM. Reason : you, tower and skokiaan know a lot more than any of our last few coaches]

The refs were awful in this game, and not just for State but for both teams. If you even looked at someone it was a foul. A few of Yurtseven's fouls looked like he barely touched a guy. When there are over 50 fouls and multiple people fouling out for both teams the refs should realized they did an awful job.

It was a weird game. I don't think we had a game in which two players fouled out this year. Bizzare.

I coached for 6 years and was doing great when I decided to stop coaching. It became too much along with teaching science full time and i always identified as a scientist first. One of the biggest things was that a poor kid we brought in from africa who worked his way up into position to get a scholarship but suffered a compound fracture on a jump stop right in front of me 2 weeks before his senior season. It was the worst thing to happen and trying to be positive for that kid and lie from the time the bone snapped until the community pitched in to send him to college took everything out of me emotionally. Hes a great kid all around but went through hell and had to watch some other guys not work hard all year.

Every coach I've ever worked with including Tim Floyd and Rick Byrd told me I was a master of xs and os.

Its constant stress and you also can't have a life as a coach and most of my buddies working their way up are at middle of nowhere low majors as assistants or juco head coaches making pennies.

As head coach at a large public school i was essentially running a business. I had to do finances for 3 full teams, and oversee things I never thought about like concessions, gates, equipment, assistant coaches, eligibility, and camps. In the season, I had to write checks to the refs, security, and close out the gym when the whole town is socializing 3 hours after the game.

Away games taking busses 1 hour away on school days and after getting back waiting for cheerleaders to be picked up because they weren't driving age and the coach was part time (didn't travel)

Looking back, I don't know how I did so much when I am being paid double now with about 1/4th of the work.

Christ this quote belongs in r/iamverysmart.

I get that Tulsi's shtick on TWW is to be a contrarian, but I think he's right in the sense that our defense is always going to lag behind our offense. Outside of 2015, KK's defense efficiency ratings always have been much worse then his offensive ratings per kenpom.

2018 - Offense 22, Defense 110
2017 - O 19, D 193
2016 - O 79, D 110
2015 - O 230, D 135

I'm sure these numbers are somewhat skewed as our pressing style allows both teams to get easy scores. I'm gonna wait until he has a couple years of recruits (I love BB and Yurt7 but both have defensive limitations, we only have one "small" PF, ect) before saying he's a bad defensive coach (DD didn't break out until year 4).

it's totally fair and acceptable to question KK's defensive numbers and be concerned about it going forward. i don't think e man is necessarily being contrarian in doing so. i think at UNCW his defenses forced turnovers at an impressive rate, so while other teams shot well, their possessions (in theory) were limited. it's also worth noting that our defense improved by over 100 spots in the kenpom adjusted D rankings from last year to this year. also, in year 1 here, his D was better than 4 of Gott's 6 defenses (Gott year 1 and year 4 were better). obviously, that's a low bar. but it is only year 1.

i think you can chalk a lot of it up to personnel this year, but our rebounding - especially down the stretch this year - was also frustrating and concerning. i expect our team speed to improve going forward. guys like Freeman (both), Yurt, Beverely, Hunt don't have much speed. so that hurts on D. and Lennard and Yurt aren't explosive or overly athletic and Abu was just bad...which hurt our rebounding.

No shame in being worried. Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the US. Thoughts and Prayers.
