You guys to need to watch this shit. It's pretty awesome.

The lead actress is the hooker from House of Cards that Doug Stamper was obsessed with. She crushes it.

My wife and I watched this a while back. It's good. It's Gilmore Girls with f-bombs.

I just finished the first season. Everything I've heard and read about this show has been extremely positive and I'm a huge Gilmore Girls fan so I figured I'd like it. I really couldn't get into it. I think my main problem is that the premise is too unbelievable to me. When she did her rant at the Gaslight and showed her tits, it wasn't really humorous in my opinion. It was like when Rory and Lorelei go on rants. It wasn't not funny on some level, but I wouldn't pay to go sit in a club and hear it and laugh like it's the funniest shit I ever heard. And then we're supposed to believe that girls gathered around her at parties just to listen to her material about guys and whatever. A real group of girls would have been quipping back at her, not listening rapt. And then those guys at the record shop kept listening to the recording of it like it was comic gold. I just don't buy it.

I mean it's not a bad show and I'll probably watch season 2 just to see what happens, but I'm overall shocked at all the rave reviews it gets.

^I watched it with the idea in mind that her kind of comedy, especially from a female, wasn't very common in the 1960's. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I looked at it.

^ same here.

I don't think the idea of the show is you're supposed to lol at her comedy sets.

One of the things I like most about the show is the glimpse into that period of time, especially with the focus on the Catskills and general window into how people vacationed during those decades past.

^^^Don't focus so much on her stand-up sets. Stand-up is the least funniest kind of comedy there is (besides the few who have really mastered it). The heart of the show, the drama and the comedy, is in the relationships between the characters. What she says on stage is pretty insignificant.

^^That's what got me hooked on Boardwalk Empire. I love anything that gives me a glimpse into 1920's America. Not that I would like to live back then, but it was a fascinating time in this country.

agreed. comedy itself was very different in those days. If you were going to go listen to Lenny Bruce, you probably wouldn't find his material very funny today, even though it was all the rage then. Likewise, I have the Bob Newhart album they reference in that show. I think it's pretty funny still but most people don't because it's just not how jokes are delivered these days and the material is divergent as well.

The party scene with women listening to her is another example of the differences. People were different then, how men and women interacted were different, what things they were exposed to (i.e. what is novel to them) was different. All these things

Any period piece should be viewed from the context of the era.

Going through season 2 in the evenings. Still highly watchable, but I'm beginning to feel like Midge and her friend are a little too anachronistic at this point. Her dialogue and her stand up sometimes feel like she's speaking from a modern point of view.
