Umm... no. It just died, I think a few days after having a calf (that I had to add to my bottle feeding routine). I can't tell if she was trying to have a twin or if something else went wrong 4/5/2018 5:22:23 PM |

did the cow walk off and leave the calf? when our cows had twins, they would always abandon the first one and tend to the second one. I don't ever remember having to pull a calf after the cow gave birth to the first one naturally though. I guess it's possible. 4/5/2018 9:06:25 PM |

I don't farm but I own one. But it's a very small farm (~150 acres). I know absolutely nothing about farming. 4/5/2018 9:26:04 PM |

It looks like she left the first but had something wrong going on in her. She moved up the hill and apparently tried having a second, but got her head down the hill and died. It was extremely nasty to see, and I've seen a lot. 4/6/2018 8:52:19 AM |

She did not die because her head was going downhill. 4/6/2018 9:54:29 AM |

If you think a cow has been in labor for several hours, especially after giving birth to a twin, and the calf hasn't been born yet, then you likely need to pull the calf. Do you have a calving pen or a calf puller available?
Thinking back, I do remember having to pull the second calf after the cow gave birth naturally at least once. We also had an incident when I was in college where a cow had triplets, and my dad had to pull at least two of them. I wasn't there for that experience though; I just helped some with bottle feeding over Christmas break. 4/6/2018 1:21:35 PM |

We've had to pull calves before, but it was too late when we found her. If I sent you the pictures, do you think you could tell if she was really trying to have a second calf or if it was something else? They're really disgusting though. 4/6/2018 1:38:16 PM |

Did you see the cow in between her giving birth to the calf and when you found the cow? We've had a couple of cows have a prolapsed uterus before, and it looks like something has gone horribly wrong with the cow, with a bloody mass hanging down to their tail with knots all over it from where the placenta/amniotic sac was attached to it. Untreated, a cow can die within a few days from a prolapsed uterus.
You can google pictures and see if it looks like that. Or, just post it on here. TWW could use the entertainment.

Yeah prolapsed uteruses are pretty awful. Fun to help put back in though. 4/6/2018 6:05:22 PM |

I added them to my gallery but don't know how to insert them here with a phone. We didn't see her between but the calf appears to have no mama.
And now I've added another huge calf born today that can't walk. Gave colostrum and a steroid shot.
We have chicken houses, so roughly 40k chickens. 4/6/2018 6:24:19 PM |

Yeah, there's not much to tell from those pictures. She's obviously been dead more than a day and the buzzards have gotten to her pretty good. You could always have cut her open to see if there was a twin. 4/6/2018 8:02:27 PM |

did the buzzards eat her udder? it's hard to tell much from that picture. it possibly looks there might be something pushing her back end off of her pelvis, but that could just be me looking at it wrong. 4/7/2018 9:15:14 AM |
