it is going to turn into a shit show (if it isn't already) once they get to our border

no matter how it ends, no one wins

if they get in this country, they just showed the world that strength in numbers is the key

if the army opens fire, fuck

if they all get put in camps, we have to pay for them

if they get sent back to the dictatorship that wants to kill them, well shit

the only winning move is not to play (but the game has already started)

I think that it is unsustainable to move in a group that large. Eventually, food and water will run out, and relying on the kindness of strangers along the way will prove impossible for thousands of people. The caravan will break apart before it gets to the US border.

It’s a story that is being reported in the news. I knew Rush said this and I haven’t tuned to AM radio in a decade.

Also they have a long way to walk. I cant imagine they make it.

I read a Yahoo! story about this a couple days ago. The comments were filled with snarky remarks about how the migrants' clothes were so new and clean.

To be clear, I'm down for the caravan, not opposed at all...but seriously, why are their clothes so clean? Like, we're talking baseball caps with zero sweat stains:

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/caravan-challenges-integrity-us-borders/573691/

?

I don't think these folks are being funded in some sort of conspiracy, but it's clear that somebody is at least buying them clothes, right?

What's the deal, guys?

I listen to them all from time to time. I also check Drudge, WaPo, The Guardian, etc. Just because I don't agree with them doesn't mean I don't have to listen to them.

Plays right into the "we're being invaded" narrative. I don't care what your position is on immigration, roving bands of immigrants isn't a good thing.

If they actually make it all the way through Mexico (it's, uhh...a really long walk...), I could see Trump actually sending out the national guard or something like that.

If they make it to our border....intentions and funding aside....it would end up being a huge humanitarian crisis if we don't do something.

I don't know what we could do, except maybe to erect a tent city on our side of the border and try to sort them out

I don't see how this caravan makes it through Mexico without a number of them ending up as drug mules (not saying that this is the purpose at all, but I bet cartels will try to take advantage). Also, the drug mule thing isn't an argument against the immigrants at all - I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to parrot Trump's "all immigrants are criminals" trope. I'm just saying I bet the cartels will try to take advantage somehow. And if they get stalled on the south side of the border, Lord knows what kind of assistance they will get.

I didn't say immigrants are bad, I said roving bands of immigrants are bad. Roving bands of anything are bad, but when the roving band specifically is going somewhere to break the law, that doesn't really speak to their overall respect for law and order.

As far as why immigrants, in general, may be bad, I'm not sure! Ask your average liberal why they refuse to live in the same neighborhood as fresh-off-the-caravan Hondurans and maybe you'll have an answer.

Agreed! The democrats are going to use this to call Trump a racist and the Republicans are going to cry keep them out. Honestly, pretty much every country in the world sucks more than the USA. That is why people want to come here and not go to another country in south, or central America. We have to keep all of these people out. If we don't then that sets the standard that we have open borders and it's a free for all.

Huge chunks of this country are rotting from the inside out bc of opioid addition. There are people whi haven’t traveled outside of their state or even county doing nothing bc the the factory jobs left.

There are thousands of people trekking across multiple countries trying to escape corruption, gang violenve and lack of work. Why wouldn’t we want them??

Seem like go getters.

Dude, browsing WaPo and Guardian articles from time to time isn't the same thing as strapping yourself into the Rush Limbaugh echo crazy chamber for however long you might listen. And I'm being generous by leaving Drudge out of the conversation, but it's all the same sport.

So this "caravan" is months away from being anywhere close to the US.

Also, it's not illegal to cross a border to seek asylum, so calling them illegal immigrants is completely false. Do people think this group of thousands of people being followed every step by news organizations are trying to sneak into America unnoticed?

If a charitable organization were to place a group of asylum-seeking Honduran immigrants in a vacant house in my neighborhood, why would I care?

I just don't get it. It seems like in one breath, some people want you to believe that these Mexicans and south Americans are lazy criminals that won't work

Then in the next breath, want you to believe that they will work and take your job if they're let into the country.

While obvious, wanted to point out the opposite is happening. Most cities are rapidity gentrifying bc large amounts of white people are moving into inner city immigrant neighborhoods.

^ out of necessarity. Take the city I live in, Los Angeles, the house I rent would be $1.4 million and it's a small 1000 sq ft two bedroom on what you'd consider a tiny lot.

In Inglewood you can get more of a full sized house for $1 million in the gentrifying areas and $700K in the not yet gentrified.

Commuting 1.5 hours in heavy traffic or risk crime is the choice.

Renters are less of a problem than NIMBY owners and developers. Nothing wrong with picking the best area for you that is affordable.

I'm just stating the price distribution is $700K to $1.4 million. Most working people that have high paying jobs can't afford a basic house close to where the jobs are, so they find other options either by "up and coming neighborhoods" or moving farther away and commuting an hour.

White people are still moving to these area at a rapid rate. Everyone lives in areas they can afford regardless of class or skin color. If no white people were moving to these areas the initial statement would be true. But it’s false.

Lol wtf are you saying. The original statement was about "liberals". Young people choose to live in cool neighborhoods that are up and coming bc they have....cool shit in them! They dont want to live in Pasadena or the valley or where ever your 1.4 million dollar house is.

Westside. Plenty of happening places here. I've never even been to Pasadena. $1.4 million in the valley gets a huge house, twice as big as what I'm in. I optimize for low commute.

I'm talking mid thirties or forties people. Those people are mostly liberal too and want places to live and raise kids. No one in their twenties is going to buy real estate in a major metro unless they are already rich. Even if you make $400K or more it takes time to save the money for a modest down payment. The cost is more a barrier than preference.

The only reason they're moving in is that they think the poor people are about to be forced out. When the wave of gentrification comes, you want to be buying.

My comment about libs refusing to live with Hondurans was kind of snarky, and it actually applies to conservatives too, but I'm really just talking about NIMBYs. Everyone says they want more affordable housing, but even your most credentialed progressive activist will be pissed if section 8 housing is to be installed across from a property they own. Everyone wants more housing for poor people, but they don't want to live near poor people because they know poor people are way more likely to bring crime to the neighborhood and lower property prices.

This may be less of an issue in places like San Francisco where people routinely make 6 figures while living 5 to a house and passing human feces and heroin needles on their way to work. But the lifestyle!

There are certainly many layers to this and even if the comment was partially snarky, its still false.

When people complain about "LIBERALS" they think of several types of people. The young " sex positive intersectional feminists" nerds are actively moving into shitty areas and the "old crunchy hippies" already live there. The run of the mill centrist democrat with 2 kids is not normally someone we're talking about in these conversations.

I dont live in LA but the people I do know who live there are all buying houses in Highland Park (kinda nice), Mendocino heights (eh) or El Sereno (not nice). It looks like mad max to me but they like the vibe or whatever.

And this caravan, all 3k of them could move into Jackson Heights or Sunset Park tomorrow and no one would bat an eye. The trains would still suck.

He's talking about the NPR-liberal types who move into an area because they think it's "getting nicer", who call the police because the hispanics are being too loud at their BBQ & promote legislation that prices out long-time inhabitants.

So there is a point there, but he's definitely got it backwards.

Person St and Blount St have nothing "cool" on them. Yet every time a house there goes up for sale, it is bulldozed and nice swanky bungalows (or post-modern) houses are going up. The people buying those houses are definitely not buying them for their neighbors. It appears that the opposite is happening...those people are pushing the current inhabitants out for choice location close to downtown.

When I say Blount St., I'm not talking about the Blount St. under those spiffy condos or whatever. I'm talking about the Blount St as you approach Raleigh from Garner. The Blount St where all the OG are being pushed out.
