I can't stand "wait wait don't tell me" because it constantly trying too hard to make you feel like its much funnier than it actually is.

^That sums it up pretty well. At it's funniest, though, it's quite funny; perhaps due, in part, to the aforementioned quality.

I don't make it a point to turn it on, but I always enjoy it when it is on.

The format is strong. It's well written. The guest is usually pretty entertaining, and interaction with callers is usually pretty funny.
