I’m not mad at our effort. For so many years We have watched out of shape effortless teams not play to the last whistle. We play with heart and defensive fundamentals. I love this team, how we play, and how we are coached.

Pretty gross shot selection and layup execution for much of the game. Hopefully we can bounce back against Pitt but I’m afraid this one is going to beat us twice.

No way. fuck that. This is the best State team in a while. They play hard as hell and are extremely fun to watch most of the time. Tonight wasn’t great obviously.

Agree with Tree. Think we were just too amped up at the beginning. Needed to settle down. Dug a big hole and nearly came back, but ultimately you can’t afford to get down that big against a very good opponent.

This is a new basketball team. One of the best I remember at State. Maybe we lose to Pitt. But this team has mental toughness that I’ve never seen in a State team. We’re flawed. But I think we’re too good and too focused to shut the bed vs Pitt

And maybe I’m wrong. Who the hell knows.

Love the effort, but our half-court offense needs some work. It gets stagnant against good teams, leading to a lot of bad shots. Luckily some went in.

great effort tonight, game would be totally different if we hit some of those 3s or free throws. UNC ran a clinic on making free throws. I loved that our press was giving them difficulty, and we fought to the last minute.

foul trouble hurt us big. Dorn/Daniels/Markell were non existent for a large portion of the game, thank god braxton nailed those 3s!

I look forward to the rest of our games and still love this team.

^ bryce missed that 3, but was clutch with that 4 point play and couple drives at the end of the game.

UNC's Free Throw defense was pretty great on the front end of a few 1-and-1s

Not sure how we kept it as close as we did when it seems like Beverly and Funderburk were the only ones that had a good game. I feel like with our lack of bigs we really need one more 3 point shooter to put us over the top. We have Beverly and Markell shoots a good percentage but other than that we don’t have another consistent threat from outside. Last year we had Beverly, Freeman, and Hunt and that worked well.

I'm not sure why they played the way they did tonight, cuz Braxton is clearly less talented than Markell. But stop hating on him. He's got a lot of motherfucking goddamn heart.

^^^^are you saying someone played well for most of a game before spectacularly failing in a key late game moment? Trying to think of a word for that.

Anyway. For a loss to UNC, this one was as close to acceptable as it gets.

Walker was pretty terrible. This easily could have been a 20+ point game. The guys need to learn from it and move on to Saturday and blow out Pitt by 18 or so.

He missed a shot, it happens. Choking would be if Bryce missed two free throws or something, not a transition 3 in a game that every other player fucked up in, unless they all choked at some point, too. But lets make semantics the biggest takeaway from this game.

Lol you can't make a long semantics based post then complain about semantics

He don't "miss" the shot he airballed it so badly that it was essentially a bad turnover.

I mean it's fine, and Bryce will be fine, but...

the shot he missed was the easily one of the best, most wide open shots we had all night

it was set up perfectly and he choked. it happens.

does missing a front end of a 1 and 1 count as missing two free throws? cuz that was a pretty big backbreaker too

we choked on a lot of layups in the first 6 minutes of the game, too. also choked on free throws throughout. Basically a choke-fest by the whole team.

We went 8-28 from behind the arc as a team. What defines a choke exactly? Airballing a shot instead of just missing off the rim? Is it only a missed 3 with less than 1 minute in the game? Just wondering.

I'm not the one who harped on whether or not it was a choke, during the game, I'm just here after the game trying to understand why missing that particular 3 is "choking". I've always heard it as blowing a huge lead, or missing a bunch of easy shots. Not because you airball one 3

We needed Markell to dominate, instead White dominated and UNC made FTs

Don't worry we beat Pitt by 20 Saturday.

statistically, no. it counts as 0/1 on FTs. but yeah, it's definitely back breaking and would be probably a worthy stat to keep.

^^^Yea i made one very small comment about it then people started arguing with me. Sure I suffer from a mental illness of needing to respond to people that say I'm wrong, but I didn't start the argument.

But yea, you don't know what a choke is. I guess some of the things you describe are choking but traditionally people use that for one/a few small late game mistakes. Buckner choked. Bambard is debatable bc he was so bad, but missing a late GW chip shit FG would usually qualify. Chris webber choked.

Anyway thanks for white knighting for halo this time.

^ yeah pretty much. Funderburk played his best game, only hampered by foul trouble. Braxton played really well, he was the only one who could hit 3s. Hellems looked pretty good but missed a couple open 3s. Our best guys - Markell and Dorn just didn’t have good games. Dorn was solid defensively and on the boards but could never get going offensively. And Bryce didn’t really get going till the 2nd half. Daniels was kinda bad.

I don't think it was a poorly officiated game, but some of the foul calls against us were tough to stomach. To be fair I think there were some light fouls called against UNC as well, but we were more hampered by foul trouble than them. We played too much hero ball when we were tied/down 2. Guys were eager trying to make the "big shot" to put us ahead. Being that close several times and not being to take the lead just once was so frustrating.

I'm absolutely disappointed that we lost the game as I thought we had our chance and blew it, but like many have said this is the first team of ours in a long time that I've seen that plays hard all game long. Its so refreshing to see. I actually thought we boxed out well last night so our lack of size isn't a huge concern to me, we just need those over the backs to be called. I love our full court pressure and hope we keep it up throughout the ACC schedule.

^ yeah I agree. This loss sucks because losing to unc always sucks. But it was refreshing to see that these two teams looked to be mostly equals. This wasn’t a case where we poured it all out vs a rival and just ran out of gas to a vastly superior squad. We looked the part of a top 15-ish team playing another top 15 team.

We choked again.
This loss stinks but there were alot worse games in previous years.
Funderburk should start.
Should have played Markel more minutes.
CJ Bryce airballing on three was heartbreaker. Any hope of win was erased with embarrassment.
We still have better records than UNC.

my thoughts exactly. i dont think we were tremendously outplayed. some boneheaded possessions the 2nd half. Markell not being much of a factor hurt us the most IMO. why does he get in foul trouble so early so often? bad refs, or needs to calm down?

Yeah, I hate to put it all one dude, but Markell has to play well for us to beat the better teams in league play. Dorn at least made up for it on the glass and with defense, but Markell was really a net negative for the game. Just can't have that from your best player on a team without a tremendous amount of talent overall.

This lost still stings
I just hope the team rebounds by Pitt
I don't see how we beat them in chapel hill without a more polished half court offense
UNC played like hot garbage and almost seemed like they expected to lose
Their best scorer was out and yet we still couldn't take the lead
We looked like a Gott coached team last night
Yes, I'm salty.

Well the biggest coaching thing I noticed was they were hedging on every screen when Markell had the ball, instead of switching, denying him a clear path to the basket or an open three. The adjustment would have been the screener rolling hard to the basket and Markell finding him, but we didn't seem to do that until late in the game.

We won’t beat them with that offensive performance. It was our worst offensive efficiency all season. So...yeah of course it’s not gonna win many games.

I thought UNC played pretty ok for a road team with a freshman PG. they’re not the behemoth theybe been in the past. They’re a beatable team.

But no this didn’t look like a Gott team. Just. No.

^^ I thought that's how UNC play, they use their bigs to hedge.
^ Trust me, I'm a huge fan of Keatts but settling for jump shots and not having an offensive cadence is something that I equate to Gott and what I saw last night.I trust that Keatt will get this team back on track for another run.

The offense was not in rhythm at all especially late on the 2nd half. I agree.

I guess I was thinking of lack of effort, lack of defense, mentally weak teams, etc when you said Gott. But I agree that the offense was out of sync for sure.

Nope, still not seeing it. Care to point out any other instance of a player missing an open 3-pointer and being referred to as choking? Not missing free throws, not blowing a 30 point lead, not calling a timeout when you don't have one, not being careless with the ball and letting the other team score. But missing a 3-pointer. Because this is literally the first time I've ever heard of that referred to as choking.

choking is missing a very high percentage shot to change the outcome of a game

teams usually shoot around 30-40 percent from 3

missing a 3 is not choking

"missed" vs "missed so badly that it was basically a pass to other team allowing a fast break layup"

Hitting the rim allows a chance to fight for a rebound and/or get back on defense. What percentage of wide open 3s are airballs?

I wasn't so upset in losing this one, because the players never quit in this one like we've seen in the past. We came back from 14 down to being tied, when under previous coaches that 14 could have easily become 30. The problem was being too overly excited when the score was close that we couldn't push through (just like missing the alley-oop against Miami). Pure jitters, but the effort and the drive was there.

So if he had bricked it off the rim and UNC still got the rebound, it would no longer be a choke?
