This MIGHT be poking fun of trumps “light at end of tunnel” comments but I’ll respond as if it’s serious.

The curve in NYC is absolutely flattening, which is unequivocally good. But remember peak fatalities will likely lag peak cases by 10-15 days. So if you think peak cases was Thursday or Friday last week the coming fatalities in the next week will be nauseating.

Again, just NYC. There is really no evidence we are at a peak in many places yet. In fact, in some we are likely not even in high growth yet. I hope the warmer weather helps but a lot of the Southeast only just recently shut down. Unless something odd happens you would think cases would ramp up in the next 7-10 days and deaths peak 2-3 weeks after that.

(Again this is all supposition — it’s a NOVEL virus meaning we can give our best guesses only)

Obviously, every death is heartbreaking up close, but keep in mind that a death is a resolved case and resolved cases represent relieved pressure on the healthcare system. The national peak should occur on April 15th, according to the Murray model which would indicated we saw peak cases last week. It was supposed to be this week which is why this realization also coincides with with a lowering of the total death estimates from 100k to ~80k.

This also coincides with fever data which has been on the decline nationwide and is probably correlated with the amount of people who are contagious even though most are asymptomatic. All of these indicators have been on the decline together.

Comparing total US numbers to individual states is nonsense because we have more than 5 times as many people as those countries. The EU has ~50,000 deaths. OK some will argue its not fair either so how about we just take the hot spots and combine them to a European sized country?


New York + New Jersey + Washington + California = ~70+ million people and ~7500 deaths

Thats a subset of the earliest hot spots in the US with a more comparable but still higher population than all four of these European countries.

France ~11,000 deaths
Italy ~17,000 deaths
Spain ~15,000 deaths
UK ~7,000 deaths

Is there any context to which you’d accept a critique of the federal governments response without defaulting to death count comparisons? This is the huge disconnect. The fatalities-per-capita will almost assuredly be lower in the US than in Italy and/or Spain. No one is really arguing against that.

But it’s completely besides the point when critiquing leaders. Personally, I think Newsom, DeWine and Inslee have been the standard bearers. Cuomo has been wonderfully transparent but he gave too much leeway to NYC early on.

Trump, de Blasio and Kemp have been absolutely abysmal. From flouting misinformation and straight up lying to giving the public assurances that they knew were not safe. Just brutally bad.

The death-ped-capita numbers will be useful two years from now when we are confident in our estimates but the reality is lives almost definitively could and would have been saved if we made better decisions at the federal level in particular but also meaningfully are the state and local levels.

Sure, there are leaders who handle it well and leaders who blunder but this notion that if we had any other leader, that our results would be like South Korea, Germany or Australia and not like the UK and France or worse is pretty ridiculous.

Look at any other situation. With many different leaders, our government has mishandled healthcare, mass shootings, natural disasters, and public safety in general much worse than all of the countries on the list so the idea that any other particular leader would have singlehandedly allowed us stand out amongst the shining stars of the world is preposterous. Its pure american exceptionalism

How can you assume our response to COVID-19 would have suddenly been the outlier?
