^^ People have to eat. If a person eats a steak at a restaurant or grills one at home, the number of steaks consumed remains the same. Now I'd expect meat consumption for instance to decline a little because some people want to eat steak but don't want to spend the time doing it, thus one reason why they pay extra for it at a restaurant.

Are restaurants actually closing? I thought they were all just going to-go and delivery.

The dow is now down more than black tuesday and approaching black monday which would make this the greatest single day % loss of all time if it held to close.

[Edited on March 16, 2020 at 9:52 AM. Reason : its down 11.84% lost 11.73% and 12.82% on black tuesday and black monday]

^ Restaurants in a lot of cases live basically paycheck to paycheck I don't suspect many are going to be able to stay open with weeks/months of no revenue. That will be felt in the industry.

Always wondered why people pay attention to the Dow Jones instead of the S&P500 which is a much broader measure of the whole economy.

But anyway, here's year-to-date performance of the individual stocks in the Dow Jones.

Huh? No, I'm salaried. I don't get overtime. If I work late or more than 40 hours in a week, the excess is also comp time that I can take off later. The system works pretty well for me, because my boss/organization doesn't abuse it and I like the time off more than I'd like a little more money. It sucks for my wife, whose organization made her work overtime all the time so she ended up with far more comp time than she could ever use before she switched to a new job.

---

As of today I'm ordered to full time telework until further notice, which is fine. What's not fine is that Maryland is shutting down all bars at 5:00 PM until the crisis has passed. In DC, they're still open (last I heard), but you're not allowed to sit at the actual bar, all tables must be six feet apart, and no more than six can be at a table. I've got a buddy who manages a bar and he's losing his mind, not just over the lost business, but over how to reorganize his entire seating area.

pretty sure I've been in some bars in DC that didn't have enough space under those conditions to sit more than one group of people. Open space is a luxury that most DC bars and restaurants don't have.

Our favorite bar in Baltimore, Thames Street Oyster House, would be able to handle all of about 3 two-tops under those rules. It wouldn't even be worth opening up.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/16/economy/job-losses-coronavirus/index.html

Quote :
"The shock to the economy could come quickly. When the job changes in the coming week are counted it could show a loss of as many as 1 million jobs, according to Kevin Hassett, the former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors under President Donald Trump.
That would be significantly worse than the 800,000 jobs lost in March 2009, the worst month of the Great Recession. That was also one-month drop in jobs since the US economy shifted off a war footing the month after World War II."

I am a regional sales rep in Charlotte for a company that sells food to hotels, restaurants, colleges, nursing homes, etc. My pay is 100% commission based. Currently the hotels I have are only around 20% occupancy at best and are completely cutting out their breakfast programs, restaurant sales are down, the colleges are all closed, and I can't even access most of the healthcare accounts that I have. Things are going swimmingly!

And that's a risk you take with commission-based jobs. Sucks, but you should be prepared for lean times moreso than a salary/hourly employee.

People are taking it seriously as fuck in LA. I live on a super busy street and it's like a ghost town. This time of day there would be bumper to bumper traffic and there is hardly a car. You can actually drive places 5 miles a way and it doesn't take 45 minutes.

a lotta farmers are worrying about how they're gonna get crops planted. many locally rely on h2a workers and migrant labor...if travel restrictions prevent those workers from working then it'll be very interesting (and scary) to see what happens. harvest time for strawberries is upcoming here locally. we're not that far off from tobacco and sweet potato planting times too

Lol. Luckily our labor is local and we’re not relying on migrant or H2A programs. Our business could definitely suffer as the economy suffers and people spend less and stay in more (understandably so, I wanna be clear that I’m not complaining about people staying inside more and therefore spending less money at my farm).
