Here lately (ok and sometimes before) the Rona I've been just leaving my receipts behind at the self checkout stations.

Is this a dick move?

I don’t even understand the thought process, what are you trying to avoid? The receipt paper was probably rolled up months and months ago, and even then It’s mechanically rolled, so unless you are getting the very first receipt from a new roll, it hasn’t been touched by human hands. I don’t think there’s much exposure to the output slot. The receipt definitely has much less exposure than anything you actually picked up from the store to buy. You are just being a horrible person (but this also pissed me off when people did this before the Rona)

months and months ago? pretty sure grocery stores do enough business that they have to change the roll more than a few times a year

^what? It doesn’t matter how often the rolls are changed. Receipt rolls come in boxes, you just grab a new roll and pop it in. The rolls were made and rolled up months ago before you buy the box. It’s like toilet paper rolls. You might be touching the edges some, but mostly touching the face of the outer roll of paper when you insert it to the machine, which is gone after the first receipt is put out

When I worked in a grocery store, we had about 40 boxes of the paper stacked in the back room.

I'd estimate we might have 10 registers open a day, and for a busy day a register might go through 1.5 rolls.

^^well yeah obviously rolls of paper aren't hand-rolled, but your post made it sound like most receipt rolls are rarely touched by human hands, or something

That is what I’m saying. There is some minimal contact with the edge of the paper, but it’s mostly just the outside face of the paper receiving contact. Everything underneath the very outside layer hasn’t been touched in months except maybe on the edge, so once the first receipt goes out, i would think there is very limited exposure

It's not really about the covid, but I usually have literally zero use for a paper receipt. I would prefer one not be printed.

Lady at Walmart standing guard by the exit door recently did get upset that I didn't have a receipt to show her and I just kept on walking. Yes there is heaps of privilege there i get it.

^ Yeah if I wanted to be a cashier, I would go down to Walmart/Harris Teeter and get a job. Retailers basically co opt us into being employees when self checkout is the only available option. I have to scan and bag my own purchases. Fuck that receipt... Let the "minder" get it...

I, too, walk past receipt checkers without stopping. Once I pay for an item/s its my property and I'm in no way obligated to let someone "check" it.

Agreed. To totally disregard someone as if they didn't exist would be a dick move for sure... Which is why I always hold my hand up and say "No thank you" as I walk past. No shit... 50% of people don't know how to react. The other 50% are pretty much "OK whatever"

but yeah when real world was happening hell if i'd wait in a LINE to get our of the store after i made my purchase. If they said anything i'd just say "no thank you" and I didn't get any repercussions because I am white.
