People will be like which car should we buy? These are the only 2 to choose from and the one on the left is way less fucked up than the one on the right

and then you show them a 3rd car

and they suddenly become hypercritical like NO THAT CAR HAS A DENT ON THE BACK RIGHT BUMPER.

[Edited on June 27, 2020 at 2:55 PM. Reason : and they go buy the wrecked car]

also the two wrecked cars cost $1 each, and the nice one costs 1 trillion dollars. so the nice car has zero chance of being purchased.

It isn't any more difficult to check a different box so how does it "cost more" to vote green?

^^Well yeah the green party has no chance because stupid people think it would cost them something analogous to "trillions of dollars more" than voting R or D.

Green party has a solid platform and theres a user on this site who said he just couldn't take stein seriously after she said she was concerned about the effects children using too much wifi. That is the equivalent of a small dent compared to the problems with Trump and Clinton (extensive damage).

Well yeah you're just regurgitating a 20 year old talking point that was custom made for people who think the election is a binary choice. A talking point that ironically led to Trump becoming president.

It is. If you want to prove me wrong, just holla at me whenever someone other than an R or D is elected to the presidency, dumbass.

(Admittedly, with any luck that might not be in the far too distant future--But I guarantee you this: It ain't happenin in 2020 you fucking moron.)

I can prove you wrong simply by showing a ballot.

I said it is not a binary choice. I didn't say there were more than two people who were likely to win. Thats a about a decision that you are making. I didn't say anything about the wisdom of the people in the country that elected Trump. Put it this way, if you all decided it was going to happen this year, it would happen this year...but you won't, because you don't even have enough agency to recognize the choice and have already narrowed it down to 2. Theres no need to guarantee that you will fall for the talking point I've already accused you of falling for.

Quote :
"Honestly I think Hillary Clinton being so disliked is what caused trump to be president"

Yeah thats the point. Its the inevitable end result of "lesser of two evils" voting. No one bothers to ask why the nominee was so shitty in the first place and what action they can take to incentivize the party to pick a better nominee.

This is where the mistake in your...."logic"...resides.

You speak of "you all" as if we are some monolothic "not horosho" entity. As if there are merely two entities:

1. The enlightened one...horosho.

and

2. "You all"--aka the Brainwashed-by-Mainstream-Media-Plebes

Neither you nor I has any more agency than the other to change the fact that the only candidates with any chance of winning in 2020 are the primary R and D candidates. My electoral choice does not persuade sufficiently many others to follow suit and break that tradition this time around. Your electoral choice does not persuade sufficiently many others to follow suit and break that tradition this time around.

You can choose to throw away your vote on a 3rd party candidate with no chance of winning. I choose not to waste my vote in such a fashion. The fact that you seem to think this actually implies you are following some higher cause merely indicates just how much of a fucking unpragmatic moron you are.

And yes, I'm aware that if everybody decided to go against tradition and actually vote their heart, rather than the conventional R or D, things just might change in 2020.

But get this straight, you fucking moron:

Both you and I know goddamn well that's not gonna happen.

I can't change that, dumbass.

Its not about persuasion. Its about being part of the problem. You are willfully part of the problem. Not the whole problem but if everyone who shares your view took action, the problem would be solved.

Your attitude is essentially "I can't solve the problem on my own so fuck it, I might as well contribute to it".

I am following a higher cause but its not a realistic one. Its really just a matter of personality difference. I am more of a pioneer than a follower. That doesn't mean I don't think pragmatic altruism is possible.

Some of these people aren't voting for very specific reasons and some of them identify with 3rd party values but either don't know about those parties or don't think those parties can ever win.

Hillary got 28% and Trump got 27%. If you subtract the people who held their noses on both sides, the numbers don't even combine to form a majority. These are not insurmountable majorities. Also, 3rd parties don't have to win to fix our system because the major parties want to win. Once 3rd parties start to take a significant portion of the electorate while still losing, major parties would improve by adopting strategies towards earning some of those votes back. That would most likely happen before a 3rd party candidate won.

You didn't debunk anything. You can't debunk a hypothetical without testing it. How did you test it? You didn't. You simply repeated the obvious fact that my hypothetical is not going to happen. You didn't stop to think about how the two-party system being solidly entrenched for years to come had to be obvious to me to feel the need to make up the hypothetical end of it in the first place.

You definitely can change the way you vote and so can everyone else who votes like you (even though you aren't going to). Its called agency. Its called democracy. Nobodys holding a gun to your head making you vote for the party...yet.

I never said one person has the power to change the minds of millions. TIL Only Trump can do that. I'm talking about doing your part or admitting you prefer the current state of politics.

LOL. Already addressed, son: I can change the way I vote, but the fact that I can't change the way others vote forces my vote to be a wasted vote if I did not vote the traditional D or R. Simple fact.

[quote]I never said one person has the power to change the minds of millions. TIL Only Trump can do that. I'm talking about doing your part or admitting you prefer the current state of politics."

Like I just said, "Doing my part" necessitates wasting my vote. It's not my fault that you are too much of a fucking moron to realize that (even after I patiently explain it to you.....repeatedly.)

You say I haven't tested it. OK, let's have a test you fucking moron:

I propose a modest bet of $1000: You vote for your preferred third party candidate, I vote for my preferred R or D candidate. If your third party candidate wins (actually demonstrating your vote was not wasted), I owe you $1000. If your third party candidate does not win (demonstrating your vote was wasted on a nonviable candidate, as I am now predicting ahead of time), you owe me $1000.

Put or shut up you fucking moron.

I'm willing to test my hypothesis. Are you willing to test it with me?

LMFAO

The offer stands.

You clearly haven't comprehended what I am saying because that bet is obvious and has nothing to do with anything I've said.

Its like guaranteeing climate change would happen if only I cut my carbon footprint and the rest of the world continues on with current carbon emissions. That doesn't mean climate change is unstoppable unless your minds lacks the capacity to transcend the present state.
Quote :

The aligning bet would be having everyone in the country who votes lesser of two evils to vote 3rd party and if Trump or Biden still wins, I'd owe you 1000 dollars.

^I know what you're saying, the problem is you don't understand what I am saying:

Yes, you have the right to vote for whomever you wish. However, my hypothesis is that if you vote 3rd party, it is a wasted vote*.

I'm willing to test my hypothesis, but apparently you're pussing out on me, as expected.

Oh well

LMFAO!

(* Wasted Vote is defined here as a vote for some one with no chance of winning.)

As you should know, that would be a completely meaningless bet: The antecedent will never be realized, so sure, I'll take you up on it, with a little side bet action, to actually make it interesting:

If the antecedent is not realized, you owe me 1000 dollars.

I mean, after all, your hypothesis is dependent upon that antecedent being realized. I stand by my hypothesis that that is an impossiblity.

Are you a taker, or do you puss out.......yet again?

Your hypothesis is obvious and I disagree with your definition of wasted because its not all about winning. Parties and candidates can influence change without winning.

My hypothetical is not a prediction of what will happen but an imagine scenario of what could happen if people like you voted responsibly. At no point have I said that I think its going to happen. You brought all that nonsense in and confused yourself.

I would hate to see you on a jury because you are too focused on being on the "winning" side to ever do the right thing. Even if you believed there was enough evidence to convict a person of murder, you'd vote acquit them if you knew someone else was voting to acquit.

Your civic duty is to vote for what you think is best for the country not what you think is popular. You are a frontrunner and in violation of your civic duty. In my opinion, you are not responsible enough for democracy and deserve a totalitarian system where the party tells you how things are going to be and then you agree with everything they say simply because other ideas "can't win".

Oh, and only a fucking moron would think these situations were at all analogous:

Criminal case juries make their decision by unanimous vote. I hope you're at least aware enough to know that is different from how a presidential election works. You can only support your position by way of shitty analogy??? Typical

I'll say up front that if presidential elections were decided by a different voting method (such as ranked choice voting) then, sure, the calculus would be different.

I am basing my analysis on the current method used for presidential elections. (I can't believe I actually had to spell that out explicitly More evidence that it's simply a waste of time to debate with a dumbass).
