Fayetteville St. reopened to vehicular traffic in 2006. There was basically no downtown/nightlife as we now know it (pre-covid, at least) prior to that. It’s amazing how much the areas around Moore and Nash Square and the Warehouse District have changed as well. As a native, I’d say that’s what stand out the most to me. Midtown development is another big one. Hillsborough St. and Mission Valley fading away sucks.

Most of that happened by the time I moved in 2011. There are a few great restaurants that have changed hands so not just alcohol.

Raleigh is better now than it was 15 years ago.

Except for the pandemic thing.

whether alcohol was the driving force or not, it made a big impact on downtown

some other things that came with downtown revitalization:
-CAM in 2011
-Red Hat Amphitheater
-Hopscotch
-Artsplosure
-First Friday
-New bus/train station (could be a positive or negative I guess)
-Bike lanes (same)
-New greenway sections
-Midtown concerts/beach music

Raleigh is definitely coming along

"RALEIGH – Raleigh is No. 3 among the 50 US state capitals, a new study says. Only Austin, Texas, and Madison, Wis., rank higher according to data compiled by financial information site WalletHub. It’s the latest in a series of reports and ratings that give the city high marks.

North Carolina’s capital ranked No. 3 in affordability, No. 7 in quality of education and health, No. 11 in quality of life, and No. 12 for economic well-being."

It also ranks 5th in having to wash your ass every time you leave the house because of humidity. 7th in mosquitos, 2nd in terrible snow drivers.

On the flip side it ranks 3rd in per capita bonjangles and cookouts and 1st in pork bbq.

I don't think Raleigh can beat Boston or Atlanta on the list, but I enjoy the rankings for now. Austin is our major competitor. The scores are very close.

Can't beat Boston or Atlanta for what? They're totally different types of cities.

It's definitely personal preference but it would take a LOT of money to get me to tolerate living in ATL. I'd be much more open to Boston, however.

^I won't say personal preference b/c it depends on serious algorithms and calculations, but it's a ridiculous list. All capitol cities in the east coast are ranked in the bottom half except Raleigh and Atlanta. Our neighbors, Tallahassee, Richmond and Columbus are ranked #28, #32 and #35.

Or it depends on what kind of mood you were in when visiting, if you got laid, and if the bars have your favorite drink. We can pretend it's mechanical and logical too.

City lists are made using arbitrary calculations by midwit city officials taking blog and magizine writers out to dinner and flirting. With the monoculture provided to us by Instagram all cities have art days, farm to table whatever and third-wave coffee. Better to compare weather and how many needles are thrown at you on an average stroll down the street.

I think my dick just got frostbite at the thought of living in Boston.

When do you think Raleigh will have the third belt-line, the 640? When greater Raleigh can represent the whole triangle area.

The Greater Raleigh area, or say the Triangle, is bidding the World University Olympics in 2027. Something promising is coming to town. It will be the biggest event ever held by the Greater Raleigh. Think about the opening ceremony in Carter-Finley Stadium. Oh my.

Maybe Russell Wilson. He finished up at Wisconsin but at least he played at the Carter or went to the school that owns CF.

It is gentrifying like crazy which is pushing out a lot of people, especially in black and brown communities. The mayor is corrupt as hell making bank off that by taking a job with Barnhill Construction while still holding office. The city used to be affordable, but that is long gone. Now it is a haven for tech bros and wine moms.
