CliffyB repeated this talking point in many interviews about LawBreakers, "the Dark Souls of first-person shooters."

I still have a thirst for knowledge. This should be applauded, not maligned.

It is simply human to be curious. I don't clap when a dog shits.

I feel like maybe you don't know that many modern-day humans.

Let me tell you something about "modern-day" humans and how many I know or don't know.

What you might be willing to recognize as human is, like, a million years old at the oldest, and "modern" humans--homo sapiens sapiens--have only been around for, like, 300 millennia.

The brain in your soft skull is not the brain of 2021 or the year of your birth or even the 20th, 19th, or 18th centuries. The brain in your soft skull is the brain hundreds of thousands of years ago, or more likely millions of years ago. It is a thing that has largely been shaped by selection pressures that--incredibly--its design has outlived.

For example, as a general thing, your brain has in part been shaped by your ancestors successfully avoiding being eaten by predators. Your whole hardware has been fundamentally determined by shit that not only does not happen and will not happen to you as an individual, they basically cannot ever happen to you or any other human again.

I bring this up because it means from an evolutionary perspective, our brains are largely fixed in ways that are suited to a world they have forever left behind. So the first point is: "modern-day humans" don't really matter as an abstraction, because the fundamental internal experience of humankind is pretty static on a historical scale. You have the same brain as Ugg, or Adam, or whoever milked the first cow.

Imagine you could earn enough money sucking dogs off to buy a time machine. You could take that time machine all the way back to 10,000 BCE and (in time) teach the first person you run into in Africa how to speak and read modern English. And that person will have been capable of learning because--get this--they have the same brain and same fundamental drives as you, and you learned it. A human came up with it, a human taught you, and you (also a human) learned it.

So the second point: One of those largely static, fundamental drives built into the time-tested design of your brain is curiosity. We are not plants, content to respond to phototropic impulses to merely face the sun. We want to know how the sun got there, where it goes at night, and whether we're going to get a light bill. Curiosity is a huge win for humans! The ability to wonder, to form a question, goes hand in hand with the urge to arrive at some kind of answer. It's what led us to imagine gods, tell stories, encode information that could be passed even across the barrier of death.

For my money, it doesn't get more essentially human than that. And thanks to evolution being slow, what is essentially human has not actually changed in the entirety of history.

But.

As wonderful as curiosity is, as central as it is to the human experience, it is also per se one of the most common traits among humankind. To be curious is not a conscious act or something special that you do. It is something your brain evolved to be, to embody. You cannot help it. You can sometimes choose not to follow your curiosity, but you can't stop it from welling up when faced with something novel or mysterious. And for that, you don't deserve applause.

I don't clap when a dog shits.

^^That was surprisingly. . . educational.

Of course, you made an anthropological argument in response to my previous comment which was simply meant as an indictment of the apparent social trend to consciously choose to be be both ignorant and disinterested.

I admire your commitment to compose all that text, triggered by a simple question and your needlessly rude response to it. But that's you, so thanks for the consistency! (It's because of your brain.)

I framed my response in terms of evolutionary biology, not anthropology.

You, a simpleton, could not be satisfied with my reasonable response that not everything is meant to be understood by you. You, a thing of flesh and blood, expect plaudits for simply demonstrating a core biological urge.

I am not impressed that you shit, dog. I don't care about the length of the log nor how it smells. You are not a good boy.

"I'm curious! Isn't that good? Isn't it good because most people aren't?" But most people are, you baby. And you mistake my indifference for spite, and in doing so, you have created spite where there was none.

LOL!

After lo these many years, you're doing a pretty good job convincing me of the merits of RattlerRyan's assertions. There's like 10 people that actively post here at this point (and 2 or 3 of those are aliases). You really don't have to put in this much effort to keep up your now well-established schtick of being an unnecessary asshole to pretty much everyone. Certainly you CAN, but realize you don't have to. You created this. Don't act like I originally expected or begged for plaudits for a simple inquiry. You responded with derision, and only my follow-up to that suggested that positivity would have been the better response. You then used a very literal interpretation of my words to take us all down this rabbit hole for reasons known only to yourself. You don't have to keep proving yourself, because I accept you.

For my part, I hope CliffyB eventually responds to your plight, whatever that may be.
