It is so costly to leave the canal blocked. How have they not just blown the ship up by now? 3/28/2021 7:11:40 AM |

They should drill a giant tunnel through the middle of it and just let other boats go through that 3/28/2021 12:03:57 PM |

Or make the ship super cold, so it gets a bunch of ice on the outside, and then that'll float out

Or put a bunch of container ships all in a row, and just turn the Suez canal into a giant conveyor belt

^ Don't be silly.
Have the captains wife die in a tragic accident, have the captain greive, and then tie a bunch of colorful balloons to the ship and float it out of the canal. 3/28/2021 3:23:50 PM |

As someone who is deeply interested in container shipping, this has been a big week for me.
It is funny to hear everyone acting like this is totally catastrophic. It's not great, obviously, and that goes double for ships stuck waiting in/around the canal, but it's not the first time the Suez has been blocked. The whole thing was shut down from 1967-1975 due to conflict between Israel and Egypt and the world kept turning. To be sure, there's a much larger volume of trade these days, but going around the Cape of Good Hope isn't that horrible.
Hopefully this shines a brighter light on the staggering levels of corruption in the Egyptian-run Suez Canal Authority, which is primarily a way to get Suez "pilots" bribed with cartons of Marlboros. 3/29/2021 9:06:22 AM |
