Man

4 hours before kick off. That really sucks.

Also makes you wonder why they were going to sea world and doing all the pregame activities if there were ongoing covid issues prior to today. Stay in the hotels, practice, and just stay healthy for the game.

Just sucks whats the point of playing any of the bowl games. Teams are just using COVID as an excuse so they get extra practices but no downside of losing a game (UCLA would have been smoked by us)

I don't think teams are using covid as an excuse to not get paid millions of dollars. Not to mention coaches not getting bonuses for bowl wins, etc. No one is actually going "oh no i might lose, better just not play and say it was covid." That's not a thing that is actually happening except in the minds of deranged fans.

So vaccines no longer matter, the protocols are fucking stupid. I got news for you everyone is going to get COVID probably mulitple times in their life (just like Influenza). We are testing people who have no symptoms and if they test positive they have to quarantine. Can't wait for Cincinnati to win a national title without playing a game because of these protocols.

Covid has put a satellite-sized magnifying glass on more things than bowl games, but bowl games are at the absolute bottom at the list

there is no point, other than TV money

(From Luke DeCock on Twitter) Chip Kelly, yesterday: “Anybody that has any symptoms will be tested after they report symptoms. You could have someone go tomorrow on game day. So we’ve got our fingers crossed. Our whole mindset has been if we have 11 we’ll play.”

Idk what protocols are but it sounds like only symptomatic guys are being tested.

^There is no beating this and either we treat these athletes as adults and let them make decisions as to whether to play or not play especially if these players just tested positive but are asymptomatic.

I mean, we have no idea who was symptomatic or not. So assuming this was cancelled due to a symptomatic players seems like pure speculation. All we really know is that Bruce Feldman says UCLA was basically out of DLineman. At which point, this kinda becomes a safety issue if you’re playing players out of position in a exhibition game.

I would guess game tickets get refunded. But that’s a drop in the bucket compared to airfare and hotel

Baseball: our players have covid, we have to forfeit, the other team wins
Football: opposing players have covid, game is cancelled, no win for us!

you assume a decent amount of risk if you buy any kind of ticket/hotel room to an exhibition game in the middle of a pandemic

I think we’d have to be replacing a team. The window is closed for the Holiday Bowl. But if a future game loses a team we could potentially play. But logistically that seems difficult.

Quality opponent and right there in town.

This pretty much ensures no fans are ever going to travel for bowl games anymore. The ACC should end its tie-ins to any West Coast Bowls.

We aren't in a Pandemic anymore this is an endemic. We have vaccines, therapeutics and other treatments.

The Protocols will need to change to meet this change. Vaccines prevent serious illness and death but you can still test positive and get symptoms. If your program is over 90% vaccinated what is the risk level to the players and staff health? The CDC has already been walking back the quarantine duration which means all of this is as arbitrary as the 6 foot social distancing requirement.

I don’t know what any of the protocols were for this bowl game. We’re seeing changes in protocols for college basketball and professional sports in response to new CDC guidelines. I don’t think the NCAA has any real power when it comes to bowl games. So maybe there’s less uniformity or ability to adjust, idk. I agree that at some point the rules will need to be adjusted. But with that said, we really don’t even know the circumstances of any of this. If you had basically an entire DLine symptomatic for an exhibition game, then there really is no need to play. It seems to have been handled poorly. Cancelling a few hours before kickoff was shitty. There appears to have been a lack of communication with State on this, which is pretty shitty by UCLA.

I think it was handled poorly. But if a team’s entire DLine is out, then player safety becomes a pretty real concern for an exhibition game.

Our team should essentially keep on standby and practicing and just be the “on deck” team ready to play in one of these remaining games on 24 hour notice. Find it hard to believe of the remaining bowl games all will go off.

The season is over. Some players flew directly home today instead of flying back to Raleigh. There will be no bowl game.

There's a tweet going around from Andrea Adelson of ESPN purporting that we'll claim this as a win in the record books. Anyone heard anything else to that effect? Cause I haven't, and GoPack doesn't at the moment either.

Yeah only thing I’ve seen officially is that we accepted the trophy. I’m wondering if for contract bonuses they’ll call this a 10th win. But I don’t think anybody else will officially call this a 10th win (like the ACC or NCAA).

If the ACC can get more money for calling it a win, they certainly will.
