Anyone ever just said fuck it and quit your job? Perhaps moved a few time zones? Any advice?

I want to leave, and the more I think about it, I just want to leave and try something new

I have. I moved to NYC in 2012 to try something new. Worked out great. First year was hell, but grew a lot, got promoted a bunch and ended up staying there 5 years and built my own team that created our company's next generation platform. Then it was time to try something new again.

I joined a startup, the engineering team was led by an old college friend. figured out in the first couple months that he was more or less burnt out from years of managing multiple dysfunctional silos in NYC, Paris and Singapore and he ended up taking a sabbatical. I was already ready to move on by this point, but I figured I'd give his replacement a shot. After a few weeks, I had a meeting with him to tell him of some of the problems in the team that I'd observed over my few months there. He basically called me a liar. I came in the next day to get my stuff and quit.

as for the aftermath of that decision, I had a job offer somewhere else in NYC 2 weeks later, but decided to hold out to interview with another startup that I had interviewed with 6 years prior and had stayed in touch with the founders. It took a month longer to finish interviewing with them, and I ended up taking that job, which was a remote team which allowed me to move back to NC since punchmonk wanted to leave NYC. that job didn't work out either. 6 months later I was looking again. c'est la vie.

Is this a job transfer question or an existential crisis thread? Now is the time to make a move.

I have twice. Once was Best Buy in college because they kept assigning me to extra shifts and would never clock me out in time, which caused me to miss several things. One day I said fuck it and decided not to go.

Another was after being an engineer for 2 years I decided to try an inside sales job and hadn't realized how much it was like telemarketing. After a month of dialing 300 numbers a day just to hope someone would pick up the phone to hang up on me, I said fuck it. I got one up day and couldn't bring myself to go in. 3 months later I had a job as a sales engineer and was much happier.

I quit one job (that I liked) to go to Automated Insights, which was doing really cool things at the time (like the Yahoo Fantasy Football personalized recaps). This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-UcTtO7BXs) helped convince me.

There were a few times early on that I semi-regretted the decision, but overall it was easily a great decision that led to 5 awesome years working on really cool projects with an awesome team.

I heard Best Buy was finally sued a few years ago by employees that kept getting held in the store waiting to be let out after every closing shift. I am not sure why Best Buy thought they could perpetually force people to stay inside off the clock....but they sure did think that was ok.

It would have been much cheaper for them to move the clock near the door and let people out when they clocked out but whatever...

fatcatt316 are you still with Automated Insights?

I made a video about them way back when.

These days I've been thinking about automated testing of blog post content as an approach to global corporate content governance in a self-publishing model.

Snewf Whoa, you made a video about Automated Insights? Where is said video?

I'm no longer with them... we got bought by a private equity company, mismanaged really bad, and then they laid off a third of everyone one day.

I've been with Spreedly (another Durham-based company) since the beginning of 2020.

Spreedly is a straight-up garbage company name. Sounds like a company that sends me unsolicited SPAM in a poorly-constructed attempt to make it look like we have a business relationship, and that the sender is an account manager ready to help me use their repackaged business software product I've never heard of.

No, I have never quit.

Spreedly sounds like some guy who used to make up drug names for a big pharma company decided to take his talents to (whatever industry Spreedly is in)

Spreedly is a service that allows you to securely store credit cards and use them to perform transactions for a number of Payment Gateways and third-party APIs. It does this by simultaneously providing a card tokenization/vault service as well as a gateway and receiver integration service.

I hope fednow kills all these middlemen, no offence
